Ice is going fast along the Michiana line. Planks are a must. Should be over by the weekend. See ya all next year!
-
She already sang down here. Getting off the ice Sunday was sketchy, and by yesterday the same pond was about 75% open water.
-
Still fishable ice in my area but I'm not going. Was a couple people on the slip (Wawasee) this morning. I stopped and there are puddles on the ice.
-
Over for me..last time out ice was getting dark and sketchy. Drilled holes were growing as day went on. Time to put away the gear and get the waders out
-
I'm done locally. Got another trip planned for sturgeon bay in a week then I'm on to open water.
-
With temps up to 72 here today in northern Indiana and strong winds it didn't take long for my biggest pond to be ice free. Once it opened up the wind was murder on the ice.
-
I was out in the boat fishing redhorse Saturday. Air temp was 72° and the water was 40/41.

Must have been windy as all get out though eh? Or was that later in the day.
All my ponds are now ice free. I haven't stopped by an lakes to see what the deal is there. I will check out Wawasee today as I will be getting some lumber near there soon.
-
It was pretty windy out in the open. It wasn't too bad along the leeward side of higher banks, though.
-
are the suckers running up the creeks already? we have a bunch of big ones in the waters around here.

sweet! thanks for the heads up. those are some tasty fillets.
-
Used to fish suckers in west Michigan as a kid. Might have to get out on some creeks here and find some holes.
-
Redhorse, white suckers, and carp are my main targets from the boat. Once the water hits 45° or so the redhorse and suckers will turn on good, and the carp usually pick up once it gets to 50-55°

Worst breakfast I ever had was smoked sucker washed down with Rocking Chair whiskey. On Crockery Creek as a teenager.
-
I don't eat 'em, I just like catching them. They put up a good fight, and there's tons of them on the river here, so they're usually pretty easy to catch.
-
been eating them all my life. i just dont eat a bunch these days. they are bottom suckers so they pick up a lot of toxins.
slim if you had them fried rite youd be amazed. they have a sweetness to them like dove breasts. i cant imagine trying to eat them smoked with all those bones :o
zcm, whats you best gfo to carp bait? i chum with corn and make sweet taters, strawberry jello and wheaties balls for the hook. corn also works on the hook very well when im lazy. crawlers on splitshot rig is my go to for suckers.
-
I just use an egg sinker rig with small octopus hooks and a bit of nightcrawler for both suckers and carp. I've used other baits and not caught any more carp on them than with crawler chunks, so I just keep it simple.
-
I catch as many carp, suckers and sheephead on white twister tails in the spring as I do walleye and sauger.
-
I haven't noticed it as much on the Iroquois or some other smaller creeks, but the suckers in the Kankakee like whacking pumpkin flake twister tails a lot, especially when the water is low.

Nothing like setting the hook on a giant "eye" then reeling in a rough fish.
-
Where I'm from you thought you were setting the hook on another sucker and a big steelhead would light up.
-
Stopped at the Wawasee boat ramp yesterday. Still ice covered but didn't look good.
-
Been awhile but i enjoyed fish patties made from pressure cooked suckers. A friend fished every year for spring suckers til he died. His favorite fish.

I used to keep a few once in a while for an older guy I worked with who ground them up and made patties out of them, too. He's long since retired though, so I haven't kept one in years.
