Tailgate problem on Dodge truck
« on: Feb 24, 2006, 02:09 PM »
I have a buddy who is over fighting the war right now. He has a 1999 Dodge 2500 ,his wife tried to open the the tailgate on it to load his 2 labs and it don't open.

The problem is it feels like the rods came off on the inside of the gate because the there is no resistance on the handel when you lift it to open the gate. On the bed side of the gate there are 3 star tip screws. If I remove the screws, will this release the handel on the outside, will I be able to see if the rods came off, will any of the lock fall down inside the gate?

Thanks for the help.

You can remove those screws and take the handle out, you should not loose the rods that release the gate if they already fell out they are gone anyways. also go to where the latches are and lube that well with a good spay lube. sometime you can look under where the handle is and see if those rods are connected  most of the time it is a lack of lubricant that causes those problems.

Thanks Crowkiller. That was going to be my next question. If I cant get it fixed I guess I will have to try and make a Ford gate fit ;)

Must be a pretty common problem for dodges around that year?   Ive got a 98 dakota, sweet little truck, only issue is that the tail gate sticks on a few occasions.
It doesn't matter if you didn't catch anything as long as you had fun.

A buddy was going goose hunting early one morning  and told me the story of how the pickup quite a distance in front of him braked and pulled to the side of the road. He pulled up behind him and asked if he had hit a deer.(really common around here) The guy said he was looking for his tailgate as it had just fallen off. My comment was "a Dodge wasn't it?" and he couldn't figure out how I new it was a Dodge. An educated guess??? ;)
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

The Colorado is nothing but an under powered version of my '04 S-10.  Don't get me wrong, I've test driven them and love the trucks overall (wish my S-10 had the extra clearence) but they are just underpowered compared to the last years of the S-10. I don't understand how they just redesigned the truck a little bit but decided to put a smaller V-6 in it?

Tailgates s**k fixed mine on my 01 F150 a couple times now.  It works for a while and then it stops latching again.  Tired of bungee cords all the time to hold it shut.  Either need a complete kit, new tailgate, or a good couple pieces of wood....

I know this may sound dumb but does it have a lock and if so did you cheak that?
I have had problems with my f 150 and just had to lub it once in a while.  ford is easy thought you can take a whole panel off and get at everything.

You darn clowns can't get anything right.

Lift the dogs OVER the tailgate!

That's like the 3 rednecks that were in the bed of a truck when it went over the bridge.
They all drowned because they couldn't get the tailgate open.   ::)

As far as fixing it, i'm not sure about Dodge, but some gates have a panel on the back of the tailgate that can be taken off so you can access the handle and get a look at the rods.  My brothers ranger somehow got a lot of salt/ash up in the handle and was stuck about halfway.  Cleaned it out and oiled it up, works like new.   8)
Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day.  But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

Check the tail gate on the inside of the bed and see if there is a small slot near the top on the right side (passenger side) of the gate.  There is a little lever that if you lift the gate will open.  My handle hasn't worked for years, just lift the lever and it opens right up.
