Nils Modification
« on: Dec 06, 2018, 05:14 PM »
Just wanted to share this, maybe it'll help someone out

I modified my 8" nils to accept a 1/2" drill without an adapter. I turned and welded a stud on to the end, you wouldn't be able to use the power head with this obviously but I have no plans to do that. The plate is major overkill but it's what I had on hand, and I took a lot of weight out of it, so it's not too bad. All in all it would have been cheaper to buy something commercially available... but wheres the fun in that.

Nice job but won't the handle hurt you when it spins around?😏

Thanks guys!

I like the magnetic cover! That cover is the worst part of the auger!

Yeah, that plate is to prevent the auger from falling down the hole in case the church lets go.

The handle will be taken off for use with the drill. I just left it on to demonstrate that it doesn’t need any special adapters

There is a market for that among Nils users.

Really nice job!  When do you go into full production?  LOL!

Lots of Nils users out there including yours truly that are impressed by what you did.  I use a Milwaukee M-18 with the 9amp battery and have never drawn down the battery by 50% while drilling dozens of holes, but that handle is your ultimate insurance policy.  Nice to be able to use it without messing around with an adapter in case of drill or battery issue.  Great to see that there are self reliant people like yourself out there.

P.S.  Work on cover next and post it.  Would like to see what you come up with.  I use the Cold Snap cover which is light years better than the Nils cover but Can you top that?

X2

Funny thing was that when I visited the Nils booth at the St.Paul show, they also used the Cold Snap cover on most of their augers in the booth.

I didn't know about the cold snap covers... that would be tough to beat!

How's you real world experience with it? Does it work as advertised?

Works great! The only possible problem is to have the rubber strap slide of/around when the cover is off and kick around a bit. Very easy to rectify.

Cold Snap cover is tough to beat.  I have had it for two seasons and it has never popped off when transporting it on ATV which is not the case with the Nils cover.  Worth getting one and very easy to use.  I always put cover back on when not using auger;  no excuse not to. Those blades are so sharp that they will do serious damage to your boots or whatever comes into contact with them.

Haha, not anytime soon. When I retire, I’ll open my own machine/fab shop, and you’ll be at the top of the list!

Yeah, I brought one as soon as I became aware of them, should have it tomorrow.

I don’t build something unless I can make it for cheaper or make it better, and I don’t think I can do eather on the coldsnap cover
