Title: Any chance for a late season recovery?
Post by: St. Lawrence River Guy on Mar 08, 2017, 12:16 PM
The latest long range forecast just came out and here are the highlights for the northeast

Week of 3/17 -
1) Projected to be the coldest week since early February
2) Projected to be the first "colder than normal" week since EARLY Jan.
3) Twice as cold as the equivalent week last year.

This won't start showing up in actual forecasts until late next week if it holds because the forecasts include a heavy reliance on long term historical averages.

Still holding out hope that we'll get out one more time on some late season perch spots.

Just came home from a short drive from my house to Eel Bay.  I guess there are some people in this world that are real STUPID.  Was getting a coffee at the local store this AM and a truck from PA pulled in towing a 4 wheeler and tipups in the back.  I asked where they were headed and they said Eel bay.  I told them that we haven't had good ice for over 2 weeks and that was not a good idea.  Well about noon the 4 wheeler is thru the ice and a few guy got wet.  Good thing the water isn't too deep.

I don't think recovery is the way to phrase it. Lakes still with decent ice will remain okay. Those with open water will become more open because of the wind.

I gave it a go last weekend, first time on the canoe this year and after 2 hours with no bites and over an inch of ice covering my paddles, gunnels, and myself I called it quits. This weather is killer with beautiful warm days mid week, then frigid temps sat/sun creating enough skim ice to making being in the boat just about miserable! I broke the ice gear back out last night to set up for this weekend. Might as well try to pull in another meal or 2 of perch since there's no way I'll be in the canoe this weekend.

I said it on the PA forum, March isn't the month that we make ice. It's the month that we hope the ice we got hangs on for as long as it can. It ain't so much the wind or temps, it's that big fireball in the sky. It's getting closer to us and higher in the sky. We won't be making any real ice until the winter equinox rolls around again in December.

Think you mean Solstice. Spring/ Fall Equinox (Equal hours of day and night), Winter/Summer Solstice (Shortest and longest days).

I'm still holding out hope because tonight we're supposed to get 2 to 5 inches of snow which will chill the water pretty well and maybe even choke up the open water and then it's going to get good and cold so maybe we'll have a one or two day window late this coming week or next weekend.

You sure?  Last year Lake George froze in March....

Look at Spider's loc. NEPA, prolly 200 miles south of George. They certainly aren't making new ice this time of year!  :P

nope, we ain't makin any more ice this year. How are you guys gonna do this March? Any better? heck, I was hoping to get out in the kayak this weekend but this dang cold front is gonna mess that up. No ice to walk on and too cold to kayak. Probably end up staying home and binge watching breaking bad.  ::)

Same scenario here the past 2 weeks, but starting tonight we have a solid week below freezing. Anything still semi frozen will lock back up, and even a few smaller lakes that might have fully opened have a chance of refreezing but caution will be key for those lakes. If it stays cold, there's a chance some lakes may be fishable (through the ice) right through till April. This next week really is turning things around.

This isn't PA homeboy.

I can still fish, but not really where I want to fish. I'm past that part of my life where I will go to a spot and chase dink pike just because it has ice. Unfortunately my favorite places are trashed. Maybe time to jog perch a couple times..

I'm ready to get the Lund out and chase muskies.

I was starting to think it could happen on the smaller lakes and ponds, its darn cold out there, but no way with all the snow coming. At least you snowmobile guys will get one last hurrah.

I'm more like southern Ontario, then NY, up here. So yeah, it's pretty far. But you already know it all, don't you?

It's funny, this month here where we don't "make ice," I've been seeing double digit below zero nights. And we've been making ice hand over fist. But you knew that, too.
Title: Re: Any chance for a late season recovery?
Post by: Spider1 on Mar 16, 2017, 12:07 PM
so like, what, it's all about you? really.

well, I'm in Northern PA, so with your thinking, it's almost southern NY.

So you have plenty of ice happening and a real cold winter. That's nice. I guess you weren't really worrying too much about a possible late season recovery then??? so what's your point?

geez, it was a real friendly kinda conversation until these clowns decided to make it some kinda weird turf war.

not gonna waste my time.

Not that I would fish any of it trap but lots of our open water in Northern CT has iced back up and is now "fishable".

lot of safe ice  in the ADK's and  in the artic circle as well  ,that's not what  we been talking about  and  now  with the warmer waters covered  by snow  the ice will rot from  under the ice ....... it's  simply common since  of you had open water  and it refroze I ain't getting on it

I haven't seen this happen in all of my years, but there's a chance we recovered a couple Lake George bays.
3 weeks ago I cut more than 8" of ice. In that time it has opened and skimmed back over as of 2 days ago.
I'll bet a paycheck a few of the LG crazies will be parked at our early ice spots this weekend. What worries me are the temps next week.

We recovered a lot of shorelines of small waters and some smaller lakes will now be ice fishable clear to April.
There isn't just a chance in some areas of the state. The late season recovery has indeed happened for some of us.

If you don't know... don't go. Simple as that really.

I knew I should have slipped out Sunday morning before anniversary fesitivities.  :-\
Probably would've gotten wet with my history of fishing days that I shouldn't.  :P
I'll give it one more weekend on ice this weekend and I'm switching gears to open water panfish.

Fishing was great but catching was non existent  ........  i broke off the only laker i hooked and my buddy went for perch and caught dink after dink but no keepers.
