Hey " J "

How do you like that paint? I like how your Textured Plastic paint looks. I chose the same brand of plastic paint but I got it in the Gloss Black.  I always thought the textured paint would look better.... and it does. Looks like I might have to repaint this summer... LOL ....

  Thanks for sharing your build.

Well I have been out in the garage tinkering as part of my "Pack Lite" project. "Pack Lite"  has become a necessity with all the slush & snow this season, that and snowshoes. As part of the "project" , I have added a removable carrier to my one man shack for my power-auger and a hole-hoppin` bucket. Will post pics of this build also,as it utilizes PVC board as well. My Hole Hoppin` bucket is a modded 5 gallon RedSox bucket. I cut off the bottom portion of another bucket and slid it inside of the RedSox bucket to give me 4" of lift and storage space. Then I added the PVC rod holders to the rear of bucket(faces away from hole) and mounted a flashlite holder to the front of the bucket(faces holes) to charge glow jigs/lures. Also cut a keeper hole in front of bucket to keep the catch outta site-outta mind. When draggin out to my spots the bucket holds a short bait-bucket in the bottom with the Vex on top. Skimmer hangs to my rite for easy access as well. Seat swivels for a quick look-see of wasup. Now I pick up my Hole Hoppin` bucket and the Vex and it`s off to the next hole.
Mod on.........

Edited Feb 9th---
Added a Gulp Holder, to the rear of bucket using an old tape measure holder from a workbelt, Holds 2 jars snuggly. Also added a waxworm holder to side of bucket using an old snowboard leash clip and a boat keyfloat, clips on and off so you can put it in your pocket on cold days.

Forgot to add a pic of my tip down. All 1/2inch pvc pipe and fittings. Including the rod and paint cost was about 12bucks and an hour of work.

I had snagged that pic of your tipdown to copy, hope ya don`t mind. I will be making 2 of them as part of my "PackLite" plan. Are you happy with how it works for you? I figured it would be a good way to capitalize on a spot that was producing and also a way to possibly increase my catch when the bite is tough.

  Great build "rlvb"

Best part about building a rod holder version like yours is, that it keeps all your rods up right and allow's very easy access. Nothing gets tangled and it makes it easy to pre - rig up different rods with different lures or baits and then grab and do a fast quick change of a rod, fast and easy. Functionality , over fancy anytime. Builds what works for you and go for it.. and your right it is and can be fun.. easy to try something and then change it later.. Remember to build what ever works for one's own needs.

Thanks for sharing.. Have a Great Winter Season and the best of luck.

I want to play. I built this this fall for the Chickens to have fresh water that doesn't get dirty nor will it freeze.
I have a Pump inside the cooler and a Heater for cold nights.

The cooler holds 17.5 Gallons so I don't have to fill it often.

You said anything.

Right on !!! " Lefty" .. Yes Sir, you are correct. I did say anything… And this is fine. ( Don't know what the mediator will think, but it is made of PVC pipe.)
Thanks brother you just made my day.
That is a very cool set up, for sure. Brings so many questions to my head.
   - Like how hard is it to train chickens to drink from the pipe area. and I suppose they just press there beaks against the metal    insert and they get drops of water?
   - What is the upper smaller diameter pvc pipe for and where does it go? I take it you don't have a direct line of a water supply to the hen house, hence the cooler full of water. If you did wrap it with a little foam for insulation, would it not keep the water cooler in the heat of summer, or that does not bother the chickens? ( warm water)
  - Must be a metal insert with a rubber around it so it will not drip or flow out ( empty )

  Excellent. Thanks again " lefty2053 "
I am beginning to think that there is so much we can make and have fun with this stuff called PVC .. LOL ..

Yes they just push up on the feeder and the water comes out. They were playing with the feeders before I had water in there so they taught themselves. The bottom pipe has water pumped into it from a Pond pump in the cooler. The return line drops the water back into the cooler. The feed line is 1.5" and the return is 3/4 "  The heater only comes on when it is below 32 and the pump will shut off if the water level gets to low. I found the idea on Youtube.
Here is that video.

Nice setup for the chickens, but what about turkeys? Prolly won't work for ducks, plus the ducks waste ALOT of water if they don't drink out of the pond, 17.5 gallons would only last me a day with 14 ducks. I have a waterer with a float for summer, but I need a way to either give the ducks constant water or not waste water in the winter. Now you got me thinking.

That is a really neat set up , but how do the chickens even know it has water in it?Is the water constantly being pu mped and it is recirculating or what?Being in South Dakota it gets real cold and i don't believe i can do this in the winter but am going to have to do something like this in the warm season cause i'm so tired of cleaning out their waters cause there always full of dirt and straw. You definetly got the ball rolling here.Thanks.

I'm in Colorado and it gets cold here. It will work in your area just have to have a heater in the cooler that comes on below 32F. Chickens didn't know there was water in it until I put water in. They were playing with the nipples before  I got it in there. Once they found water comes out they just go to it when they want it. As for the water,it flows from the cooler and back into the cooler using a pond pump. I used this one. http://www.pondplanet.com/pumps/Fountain-Pumps/TotalPond-170-GPH-Fountain-Pump-Low-Water-Shut-Off-MD170ASB and the heater I use this one. http://www.amazon.com/Deicer-Heaters-DeIcers-Fountain-Products/dp/B006Z2BSZ8/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1350309800&sr=8-13&keywords=500+watt+pond+heater Except I found this heater for a lot less, I think I only paid $39 for it.

Cool, I never thought of that. I used to do the slush things with one of the older chairs I had at one time. But, I did not think of it for the tip-downs. Right on.

I built my auger rack for my smitty sled today. The only thing I don't like are the forks on top of the posts. They are not secured very well. The threads are too coarse to fasten with any nuts. So, for now I just have them screwed into blocks of wood inside the top caps.

I modified the forks so I could bolt them to the top end cap. They were wood screw threads and I had then cut off and a bolt was welded in place. The welding melted the red rubber off of the forks. I had to by some plasti-cote the recover them.

  Hey jbird68,

  Good Morning.
Man, that is awesome. I have been thinking when I get that heater, how I would carry it and hold it in place, while it was on my Ice Fishing Sled.  But I had drawn a blank on how I would attach something to it. So it was easy to carry around.

Great build Brother.  Please … lease let us know how it goes when it is all wired and glued in place.

   Hey "J"

Your smitty sled is cool. Please refresh my memory. Is a Smitty Sled, where you can stand on the back of it and ride it a little? ( Right behind your Ice Auger?)

The only thing I could think of, regarding your concern about the strength and shaking of those two holders.

What if you were to take em both off. ( put em aside for another project one day)

   -  What if you were to take a Tee off of the pipe that comes straight up.

   -   then take two small lengths of pipe out of it ( one one each side ) ( You would have to decide how long, but long enough to side a 90 degree elbow on the end of it. ( Now it is shooting straight up )

  -   Decide how high you wish to go .  ( Keeping in mind what you discussed before, regarding movement and jumping of the auger. When   you hit a bump.

   -  Hard to explain  ( with me drawing it) but it would look like a upside down horse shoe, or big U..  but this way it has no direct metal through a little hole that has to take the vibration.  But a Tee (Glued in time) to the pipe that you have attached to the skies and it holds it in p;ace with a tee then 90 degree elbows, then any height of pipe you wish to maintain the auger in place.

I will see f I can find a picture from my stack and see if i can post it on here.   I have not posted a pic in such a long time..  LOL ..

Sorry if this confuses you more.  LOL ..

Great thread! You guys have given me some ideas here...

Here is my project sled. Great for running and gunning, I use it a lot when setting up for pike in the morning rather than lugging my big sled around...

   Hi Blaine.

Great Pic and  build.  Don't take this the wrong way…. But .. When I first looked at the pic of it… ( With OUT reading what you had wrote first)
My first thought was… " Cute, small and would never work for me….

Now Let me explain…  LOL ..    I am a born Pack-Rat.. Hoarder, some might say ( when it comes to my packing for fishing or anything)

I want to haul the world!!!!! No matter how heavy the world is… and if I can carry someone else's stuff , to make it a better walk for them I throw there stuff on as well.   LOL.  So I keep thinking Awesome build but too little … LOL

Then … then … I read what you had written and it made all the sense in the world.. You wrote that this one was used for your " Gunner and Runner" Sled.   Gawd, what a wild idea.

Holy crap Brother!   It then hit me ….. I need to build a trailer for my bigger sled, ( which, I still hand pull)  a gunner and runner like you mentioned. So I don't have to use my sled ( onceI get 1- auger, two tents, two chairs and a whole lot of gear off of it and then repack it to take it too the holes, or go and see and help someone else with there stuff,  etc.

Now, as soon as my belly has healed, you have me thinking that it might be time to hit the little workshop in my basement and give it some serious thought about a little pull along trailer for my sled. …. Ahhh geese thanks Blaine.. you gave me a work project with out even trying… My wife may not thank you…. But I do thank you… ( Handshake )… LOL

Once again sir.  Great build, smart small and light… perfect for running all around. I also love the fact that your Fish Finder is hooked to it.  Really Cool.
  Have a Great Weekend, everyone.

Sorry never had time to find a picture and then relearn how to post it again.

On the ULR I will try to stick to this note..   Take a look at some of the pics to see if you can see what I mean. When I say use your pipe, tee's and elbows to make your holders.

Just trying to remember back what I have posted on there for pics. But, it might show what you could use or even the way I hold my chairs on there, that is kinda half of what I mean..

Not JUST a fish finder but Side Imaging  ;D I can spot the brush piles from 150 feet away, drop a waypoint on one and walk right to it with the unit showing me the way  ;) The unit will run off of my flasher battery. Once we've found what we're looking for I shut it down and fire up the flasher... Almost like cheating somedays.

I carry the tip ups for pike. We're allowed 6 lines here, so we spread way out and each go our own way with the bait and terminal gear. One we're set up with 5 lines we pepper the place with holes and run and gun with the rods for crappie and perch.
I'm not as young as I used to be but I'm much more efficient  ;) Work smarter, not harder...

Here is a video of how we roll: Precision jigging (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb6SYKcMTNc)

Hey  wiredstone and bart,

  Afternoon All.

Ya, I guess your both right. "Working smarter and definitely fishing smarter"
I agree, but at times with my ADHD… I do hear at times, but kinda slow on the up take, when it comes to doing the Smarter thing.

We are only allowed to drop two lines here at any one time per person. So at times I guess i would not need a little Runner and Gunner. But I love how fast and light it would be.

Man, I do love the idea about that Flasher thing, though. Down the road( maybe next year I hope to get one)  To be able to find all the side weeds and points of interest, does sound like a Win-Win situation. I agree with you both.

Bart, you are right it is a great Video. I have never fished with one or with anyone that has used a flasher or something like it.
It does seem the way to go for sure.

    Thanks again guys.

Take Care.  and once again thanks for the info.

I see what you mean about using t's and elbows to make holders. Too late now, though. Someone else had bought a pair of gun holders for an ATV that I really liked but not willing to spend $40+ shipping. I already had one garage tool holder and they are pretty cheap. So I just had them modified. I used large washers inside the caps so all the stress was spread out evenly instead of just at the hole. What I was worried about was the auger stand swaying from front to back...not so much from side to side. I thought about putting an angle bracket from one upright to the ski but didn't want to have something sticking up from the ski that would make packing the skis harder...if you know what I mean.

…………………………………………………………………………………………

   Hey Blaine,
Morning young feller, and everyone else.

Thanks for the pic, you made my day … LOL ..  Glad to see that I m not the only one that brings everything or tries.
As I looked at the amount of items, you were getting ready to haul for a enjoyable day of Ice Fishing.

I started to think of what I could bring if I just had a truck.  Then .. then … I started to sweat.. LOL …  It takes me for ever now to unload the back of my Rav 4.  If I had a truck, oh I would be in trouble.

But when I look at the back of your truck. ( with out seeing everything at the bottom..LOL) To me it looks like you have just the right amount of items that a person would use with fishing with one, two or more people and not need anything. ( I am figuring you had at least two ice fishing tents at the bottom)

Well, long story short, You , "WE" are kinda a like …. scary Eh? … LOL .. But do you think we are the only Ice Fishing Pack-Rats that are out there??   I would hope not.
I agree with Ya. It is a disease! Ha, Ha. As I see it in my head.. OK … ok … let me try to reason this out, in away that if my WIFE ever reads this. It might make sense to her or at least convince her that for what ever reason I have it worked out in my head of why I have to take everything in the world with us on a Ice Fishing trip.

Ahhhhhh, Crap.. I think my first cup of coffee just kicked in with my ADHD .. LOL.. So I hope this is not too long of a story … ( Not to sure if anyone appreciates me going on a Blabber talk on this site.  Hope most are ok with it. LOL … I am trying to keep them down. (short)

Now where was I?… Oh Ya.( See if any if this rings a bell with inside your brains, as I try to explain this in a way my WIFE doesn't shake her head every time she see's me pre pack for 3 day's of a one day IceFishing trip)  In my head I don't bring everything just for the sake of saying I can. I ( tell myself) bring a lot of stuff I guess, because I am trying to prepare for the "What if's".  Like - I should pack these extra 7 ice skimmers… what if we come across someone that does not have one. ( It has happened once so far.)  What if we don't bring the extra tent with us and we meet up with someone that could use it. What if we don't bring enough food to feed the entire lake. Not nice to set up the old propane stove, if your not gonna share a hot meal with others that could use it.

Ok … ok … I just took a breath and read back what I just wrote… LOL .. now I wonder if maybe it was beginning to sound like B.S., just to confuse my WIFE that it is a must. That I have to bring so much stuff.. ( Note - - She has a really good B.S. meter, by the way. Hence the rolling of the eyes and shaking of the head as she oh so politely listens to the reasons I try to provide. ))

Blaine !!  I think your right…. We ( and a whole bunch of others, I might add) have a disease.  There, Ok … I said it… You have a disease.
( ok, Ok ,  maybe I do as well.. LOL)

But … but … Everyone out there… Ask yourselves  this… If you had a choice to have this so called " Pack-Rat" disease, or so called self affliction of a sport that we all love. Would you not want it to be for Ice Fishing…   Ahhhhhhhhhhh, Sorry I should get off of my soap box, ( which mind Ya, can be turned up-right to hold more stuff) and just stop typing.

I am far from a great or even good Ice fisherman. I have no problem admitting that. As one has to get out a lot more to be able to be that.
But, maybe that is it, maybe for me and some other Pack-Rats. It is not the idea of catching the fish( Don't take that the wrong way) … But it is the whole adventure… the hours one can spend in pre setting up the gear they wish to take… playing it through there minds of what hooks would work the best. The what ifs'.. Like, what if the wind comes up and the temp drops out of this world… DO WE have enough stuff with us that it will not be a day of disaster, but a day of.. Hey we got through it… and still enjoyed it.

Hope Ya know what I mean…. You … you  " Diseased Pack-Rat, over hauling, son of a cold worshiper, fish hunting, friend making, finger freezing, Addict! "

Nuff said…. LOL .. Sorry if I offended any one in the making of this over coffeed, ADHD Style of conversation.

Wishing you all a Safe and Eventful day on the Ice today.
Enjoy your day and all those around you.

(( have to grab some more coffee and the wonderful pancakes my wife makes.  ))
Take Care all. Be Safe and always remember to be You.

So is that 3/4" or 1" PVC you used? What did you use for the hook on the rod tip?

Lefty its 1 1/2 in, and they are key hooks with a 90 degree bend in them.  You set the rod tip under one hook and then run the line around the other so that the rod tip is pulled out from under the first hook, setting the line.

I use the same thing.  They are so handy to have around the house for all kinds of homemade projects.
You can also get them in a lot of lengths, hooks and circle hooks as well.

look back a page for those pics.
Pole tip goes under first hook, line goes over to second hook.  When a fish pulls on the line, the pole tip it pulled toward second hook, releasing it from first hook.

Bart these are the best I have, we presently have no Ice in Indiana :(

The rod tip is under the hook on the left as you look at the picture.  The line from the rod tip is taken and run around the hook on the right.  When the fish takes the bait, the rod tip is pulled out from under the hook on the left and the hook is set.  Caught two Bluegills with it last year, during a very short season here in Northern Indiana.  Hope this helps.

Hounds, thanks! I'm seeing it now. Question, the hook on the right where the line goes around, is the "L" hook necessary or just a stud type hook (the bend cut off,"l") would it work?

Bart it isn't neccessary.  It is just to pull the rod out from under the other hook.

Here ya go

OK,I got the parts and have most of it cut. It is taking a little time getting the Length just right. I know all poles are not created equal. My length at first cut was 18" but then I cut the pole holder part down some so that will have to be shorter. I will have to play around with it a little more to be sure the rod tip bends just right. Had to stop working on it as I am now cooking Corn Beef Brisket and Cabbage for dinner. Yes I am the cook in my house. I like it that way. I got my first Pressure cooker and I found a good recipe for Brisket.

I only have one rod I use with mine, not sure the other I'm thinking about using will have enough energy for a good hookset.  Dryfire it at home by tying a weight to your set up and drop it and you can start fine tuning it.

Got one done. Not perfect but works good. I used a Zip Tie added to the tip of the pole for adjustment. If you want less tension use a longer zip tie.

Good idea with the electrical tie.  I'll bet a snap swivel would work too.

I am modifying it tomorrow to be more like yours. I need to tilt the front out so the line drops in the center of the hole instead of the edge of it.

Are those lag bolts or just threaded bolts so it will come off the sled?

  Excellent !! " Hounds … Excellent build!

I love how strong it looks and is. The way you used a wide variety of of TEES and Elbows. With the amount of cross joints you have in both directions and side to side and front to back. It looks like it is very very strong. It looks like it would hold way more weight than one could pull across the snow. I know that Tees and any joint are not always cheap but they help give so much extra strength with tied in PVC pipes at certain places.
I can't wait to see how it looks all loaded up on the ICE! The Hoarder in me … Yells … pack it on there Brother!  .. LOL ..

It looks so light also. I Like how you have hung the shovel and extra rope. Everything is in it's place and out of your way.
Do you think you may need a couple of cross overs attached to the wood blocks from one ski block to the opposite side? ( just to limit the sway of the skis (possible little wobble) and even more strength?)

Thank you for showing us your PVC project.  Cool.

They are Lag bolts, I'm not sure about the cross members that may be the next alteration.  I also plan to add 4 Lawn mower wheels about an 1/8 to 1/16th lower than the skis.  Thats for when I'm on pavement or cement that has been shoveled.  I still have to glue her up yet, but have everything dry fitted and ready.  Loaded it up to make sure everything fits.  Here is another pic with it loaded.

I think in total about 4 pieces of ten foot pipe.  I also bought some 2 footers I found at Menards.  I've had a recent death in the familly so I do not have time to count the elbows and T's for you at this time.  If I were you I would use 1 1/4 because I have seen Corners at menards and crosses at ace in that size. could not find them in 1 1/2.

I'm still working on getting it wired to the battery. I put 3 rocker switches in the lid of a plano ammo box. I need to pick up an inline fuse and a few audio jacks, plus wires and audio plugs. The other 2 switches will be for future lights.

My modded Strikemaster Glide Lite.  Fits in all three of my Clam Fish Traps, pulls like a feather, and carries everything I need for a day on the ice if I plan to fish outside.  Quite a bit of PVC on this bad boy.  All rod tubes sized for my Thorne customs.  Love this thing.  First time on the ice with it I was offered 200 cash for the Glide Lite.  I passed obviously.

The following photo shows something worth pointing out and explaining.  The front auger support is a sleeved PVC pipe connection.  The bolt in the bottom of the 1 1/4" PVC is drilled all the way through and serves as a stop for the 1" PVC with the "tee".  The upper connection is a threaded rod that I bent to the circumference of the 1 1/4" PVC and drilled into the top edge of the sled.  I wish I could have done this different, but this was the best I could come up with.  The bungie has a nice spot to hook to with the threaded rod though, so it may not be all that bad.  The tall PVC pipe with the "tee" also slips out easily for storage once I am to the spot and fishing so it doesn't get in the way.

I think the 1.25" is the best all around. 1" will work with a lot of rods but not all. I think 1.25" will work best.

Yeah, for sure go with 1 1/4" PVC for rod holders.  A lot of handles are between 7/8 and 1" in diameter, but then you add the reel to the rod and the reel foot adds 3/16" generally.  I use 1 1/4" for all my rod holder sets.  I have some stuff I did in my old 14' Lund boat as well with PVC.  Removed the middle bench and ran tubes through the front bench for rod organizers.  Works great.

Here are some pictures of the PVC mods I did to my Shappell Kodiak sled.  The front and rear PVC assemblies are each bolted to the sled lip by four ss eye bolts, which also act as tie down points.  The two grey painted plywood platforms are screwed to half sections of 1-1/4 inch PVC, which fits perfectly over the 1 inch PVC frame members allowing the platforms to be easily lifted off.  The rear platform is mainly for use as a table, but if necessary more stuff could be bungied onto it for transport.

The PVC frames are all 1 inch size except for 1-1/4 inch tees at each end of the rod holder assembly to accommodate rods with Arctic Warrior brackets strapped to the rod handles and 3/4 inch is used for the spud and auger holders.  The 1 inch PVC crosses make excellent rod holders with a little notch cut for the reel stem to fit in.  The crosses are spaced 5 inches apart, just enough to keep the reel handles and bails from interfering.  The horizontal tube behind the rod holders is 1-1/2 inch PVC for the ice scoops to fit in.

Thanks, and you're right it did take quite a bit of time.  I had to lay it out on a drawing to be sure I got all the sizes somewhat right before cutting.  Even then a few changes had to be made on the fly, but it was a lot of fun to design and build.  PVC is great to work with since you can put it all together without glue and easily modify it until you're satisfied, before making it permanent with glue.

Made some rod holders to keep backup rods stowed but ready for action.  I shimmed the back so slightly tilted forward to clear the back of the tent.  The PVC removes from the caps when folded down.

I made this a few years ago for my lantern because I have never had good luck with the bases that pop on to the bottom of the tank .
You can make on for just a few dollars . All you need is a piece of 4" PVC mine is 7" long and a toilet base flange and a little glue

Hey Reb, I just sent you a PM.  But as the norm for me…. LOL .. I'm not sure if I sent it at all or if even to the right person..  LOL … Damn this new technology.

Later.  Once again I hope you and yours had a great summer and everyone was kept safe.

With the PVC rods holders mounted on the sleds, do your reels freeze up because they are not protected from the wind? I want to add some like Tdobbs on the inside of my one-man flip-over. I just do not like having to reach in to a rod bag or hard case. Would be nice to just grab the rod and fish.

Hey Morning  Idahogator,
Excellent, glad it got you thinking.
I had the same thing happen to me... LOL.. I was going through it and saw some cool inventions and ideas that I had forgotten about.
It got my brain moving again.... LOL..  It is a wild ride going through the older threads and seeing again the great ideas and creations everyone has made in the past that can be reinvented or appriciated for just the thought that has gone into so many of these items.

Great to see you all again.

Have an excellent Sunday everyone and an even better week.

I first read this thread last winter and am just now finishing reading it again after finding it thru Searches and have been brainstorming as I've been re-reading this thread.
Having just retired I'm already making plans for a "hounds" inspired PVC tip-up. I plan to make the max. allowable in Ohio. (6, I believe)

Now I need to find a good rod to use with them. It would seem that a fiberglass rod is required to get the bow in the rod needed?

- I'm going to buy the finest grit emery sandpaper to "polish the cup-holder hooks (removing any production nicks, etc.), and experiment with fine tuning the distance between the hooks to provide a slightly longer pause before the hookset (to give the fish a chance to better get it inhaled) to increase hook-ups. Simply adding more hooks in a line might suffice.

- also wondering if using Carnauba car wax on the rod holding hook after polishing them might make for a more friction-free jump off of the rod tip.

- I'm also curious as to how small a lb. test fishing line can be used for panfish; the polishing of the cup-holder hooks should allow smaller lb. test line. (more experimenting)

Then with the likely short ice fishing season here in Ohio this year, I'll redesign my ice sled with extensive use of PVC for next year.  @)
When all is said and done, I hope to post some pics to give back for others to benefit as I have from this thread.

A thousand thanks to all of you for sharing your brilliant ideas!

Not sure if I posted the project before or not. Used pvc for the tent frame and the runners on the sled. I constructed the whole project. Made the alum sled, sewed the tent and made the frame.

Then I made it a drop down smitty.

Do any of you have issues with your sleds tipping when walking through snow?  I thought about adding on to mine with PVC like the creative guys above, but when the snow is any deeper than 10-12", my sled tips back and forth in my footprints.  Thoughts on that anyone?

Newest version of my rod holders. Went with a V shape holder. This allows for all different size rods that will just sit on it. These are a tip down type. The rod will tip all the way down into the hole and stay on the holder.

How tall are those risers Lefty? And do you lighten the drag much or at all on that set-up? I need to make a couple of those for myself...

I made them 18" so about 19 plus from the ground/ice up. I made them tall so I don't have to bend over in my Chair to grab the rod. I used to have the wire wrap around the rods but them figured I might have to use a different one once in a while. So that is when I figured it was better to make a V shape and now all rods will work. I have the Wire go through holes instead of resting on the top in a notch. That way the wire never comes off. And just rest the rods on their is plenty good enough to hold them.

Hey all, hope everyone has been doing well and had a great Ice Fishing season!

Just thought I would show an old Ice Fishing Sled build I made in the past.

(20648)

I pulled it out from under it's cover a little while back and that gave me the BUG again to make something out of PVC again.
(Since I also had a lot of pipe and items left over from my Ice Fishing Sled Build)

I got the the bright idea to make a Pen / Brush / Easel  holder for my Drafting / Art Etc. Table.

I am working on it now... but overtime I go downstairs to work and look at it I keep adding something new to it.

The WIFE looked at what I had built so far and all she said was...... " Oh my God... it is the Ice Fishing Sled all over again, here we go!!"

( and I am not done yet with it...)
She named it "Ice fishing Sled Two"....  and ... and.... remember it is just a Pen/Etc. holder... LOL.

Hope to have Photos of this new PVC Pipe build soon.

(( looking forward to seeing all your SUMMER PVC Builds as well. ))

Cheers all.

Morning Bart !!  Everything going great here Sir.

I was hoping you would have had a chance to see my post. I forgot to say hi to you.

Man, your the one that Really got me started on use PVC Pipe Etc. to make things, and that was after I seen what you did with your sled.  It was the beginning for me. ( I thank you for that.)  I had that problem of my old sled and me trying to carry so much stuff and watching it always fall off, it was your sled that got all of us thinking. ( handshake)

For sure Bart.... You can build great a Rod Holder for your snowmobile. I look forward to seeing it, Sir.

I have never used a Heat Gun to do anything with the PVC Pipe.... I would be very interested in seeing what you can do with it for sure.

I have just been using a little (very small) Butane torch to do the adjustments I need on the PVC.

All the holders you mentioned , sound pretty cool. As well for storage in the shop etc.

How did you make out with your Chickens and the water supply to them as well have you made a PVC feeder for them yet?

You and yours have an excellent day and a even better week and weekend.

   Yak to Ya later,

  Morning Bart,

Hey Brother, great builds. Love the water supply system. The words can grab some water and get a view outside. As you can look in
from out side to see if they are drinking.  You could run the top of your Feeder out the wall with a cap on it ( weather protector) and fill it from outside and never have to reach in and unhook it and bother them (if that does bother them at all).

I love how you have the Key hanger attached to the back of the tube.  How did you attach those two little key holder supports?

Thanks again for posting your PVC builds and ideas.  Cool man.  keep it going.

Morning Bart, Raquette,

Wow, that sounds awesome guys... Fresh eggs for every morning sounds so cool.
I have been eating 3 to 5 eggs for breakfast every morning for so long I can't remember that far back.

With my ADHD, having protein really helps me. So I start each and everyday with my eggs  as a start to my protein regiment.

That is so cool that you two have access to your fresh eggs, let alone the fact that you are raising your own chickens to do it.
( or as Bart put it... Have your pets make your breakfast, or something to that fact..LOL).

Bart, Yesterday I finally got my PVC Pen / Brush / Easel set up done and painted and hooked to my Drafting / Art Table.

Took lots of photos of it. Posted some on Tweeter and I will try to remember how to post them on here again.

You two have a great Sunday and enjoy your morning eggs.

Be safe and enjoy your day and all those around you.

Excellent Capt.

Thank you very much for your feed back and letting me know the photos can been seen. ( New Technology  and all... LOL)

Believe it or not.. the best part about this build is that I only  used parts I had in my little work shop. Whether they were parts I never used from the Sled build I made.. If you look closely  you can see I used old Luggage frames and wheels, Old Scotty rod holder items I had kicking around.
Old lure tackle boxes I ripped apart and reused the parts... Like I mentioned I used a lot of stuff from my work shop I had been hoarding. LOL.

I really did bnotspend anymore money on this build... or should I say any more NEW money... LOL.. As it was bought and paid for some of the PVC pipe parts Etc, from , my sled build I had left over.

Thanks again Capt. Jim.

   Cheers,

My rod holders are all mocked up and fitted, just needs a little sanding and prep for paint, here's a few pics before they get painted, all black. They should keep my primary rods at hand and well protected. The tough part is going to be cutting into the hood so it will slip right on and off.

Good Saturday Morning Hello Bart !!
Hey Brother, sorry for the late reply.

Hope all is going well with you and yours.  Awesome photos of the new builds your into. Those rod holders look great.
Nice set up on your snowmobile for sure!  You and I are of the same mind.  Plastic moulded Boat Rod holders, Etc. make for superb
add on to so many other PVC builds for sure. And as well any metal pipe holders or clamps are also fair game... LOL.

Great ideas, keep going, don't stop inventing and building now... the summer is young.  Hee Hee.
I would imagine you have those all painted by now and your on to your next idea...
Once again, great build and use of your imagination and designs. Very practical and useful builds indeed.  Keep it going young feller !!

  Cheers,

Hey Everyone..
Recent fast build I had to do. Recently went with a large and longer ( more joints) Downspout drain pipe.
As way more water will be going through it, weight wise for the span of the length.
I figured I would try a different way to support the joint.  ( maybe over kill) I thought I would lengthen the area for the support instead of all the single point and stand support I have used and seen in the past.    As the norm for now I used some left over PVC Pipe I had, as well as a New Metal Shovel handle I had bought at Princess Auto a few years back, cheap.  ( actually had bought three of them, thinking I would use them one day for something... LOL.

I made the support 18" long ( about 9" on each side of the joint) with fairly wide base at the legs.
Time will tell, but it should be ok. Just waiting for the rain now... LOL

Have an excellent weekend everyone.. looking forward to seeing your new builds, designs and inventions regarding PVC Pipes, Etc.

Cheers,

There is other uses for PVC than for ice fishing!  ;D  Nice job on the Downspout pipe support. (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e322/swampstalker/SMILEYS/happy0144.gif)

I did get it a finished, I even bought a new rod & reel to test it out this upcoming season...

Right on Bart,

 They look awesome !!
Very nice painted finish on the PVC pipe. and I like that you also painted the Pot metal pipe clamps and holder to them.  Excellent PAINT finish!
I think that is really cool that you kept the bottom end of the rod holders open a little.. So that if any snow that falls into the top (when it is snowing and maybe parked or driving I guess Rod Holders  or water) (melted snow, from possible
any engine heat from the side of the Snowmobile) can drip out the lower end.

Question. ( Having said that) When you giver on your drive to that perfect fishing spot.  Does much snow fly up and into the air, in front and sides of the snowmobile,  maybe when you're hitting the deeper snow?

I am probably wrong, but if the snow does get kicked up into the air. Is there a slim chance that some of it could go up into the little bit of the open end that you do have. Do you think you might need a small little deflector maybe a very short distance right in front of it? To stop any powered kicked up snow from going into that lower end. Only thought of it... Cause ( long story for another time)because i had a tip of a Rod freeze solid in a melted puddle of snow, that froze.  LOL..

But I have not been on a Snowmobile since I was a very young kid, let alone be fortunate enough to use one for Ice Fishing...  (Cool, Lucky you). LOL
So I could not remember how much snow could fly up the sides and maybe into the little opening of the rod holders.
They are probably fine.. You would know better than me Sir. Just a thought I had. Not sure it would ever be a problem.

Just had a thought... ( Ya, Ya, it hurt....) You may have already thought of this and are on it. On the upper end of the rod holder, are you going
to make a easy tie bag of some sort to put over the top of your reel and rod end Etc. Too keep the snow off of it.. hence that evades the problem of any snow falling into the top of it that could freeze.

As Well The way you have the Riffle holders set up I take it that is for your Power Auger?.. If So that is really Cool indeed.

Great build Brother.           (( ok,, gonna stop babbling and typing now... LOL))

You and yours have a great evening Young feller...
   Be Safe... Tight Lines....

90% of the time the snow never gets anywhere but in the track. The main reason may be I am a elderly gentleman, rarely ever go over 20mph. Deeper snow, I can't risk getting stuck... again an elderly gentleman. I'm retired also so I can pick and choose my days. My main Lake is usually largely wind-blown of most of the snow also.
I have a few pics...

rod rack I made for soft water rods on a table saw.. I am sure you could add it to your shanty or even a wall... but closer together for ice rods all it is made of is 2 inch i.d. schedule 40 pvc pipe drilled strait threw so there is a screw hole.. and one  drill whole big enough on the adjacent side bigger to fit a long Philips bit threw to screw it to the ceiling.. any how enjoy the picture.. also be careful in the garage cause up in the rafters is warmer then the basement and the rods tend to get brittle up there in a unconditioned space...

I did another PVC project, kayak outriggers, I incorporated a couple of rod holders into it as well. I added a anchor holder to my fishing crate also.

Holy Cow!!! Double WOW !!!!

Hi Bart... Man, brother you are a Wizard!  Brother that is an Excellent build..

I bow to the king.    I love it.  The Pontoons, Rod Holders, including a very cool Anchor holder. ( that may double as a rod holder if the anchor is
in the water.
Bart, you really out done yourself this time. You designed a very clean looking and light weight system that looks like it will work just perfect.
Awesome how the pontoons are in four separate pieces... I like that.
I like that your seat also sits up high. I could not sit at the bottom of a Kayak.. Tried it three weeks or so ago in a very low canoe. Killed me sitting so low.
So all you have to do now is decide how you are going to secure the sail for it.... LOL.

Great build Bart !!  Have you had t on the water as of yet?

Take care brother....and don't ever stop designing or building the items in your brain...

Thanks. I had it out for a test ride, the pontoons are awesome! The kayak is rock solid, no more of that spooky tipping. I stood and it felt good, should be standing to fish in no time. Hitting the water in the morning and fishing this time!

So, one of the spots I normally fish is a pretty good walk along mostly asphalt, which is kept clear of snow so it can be tough to drag a shack/sled. I stole an axel design for a kayak trailer and made a cart around it.

Put my suitcase style shack on it, along with some buckets, auger, and tote, it's a pretty easy pull when loaded.

Thinking it will work out nicely, going to add eyebolts for bungee straps and screws into all the connections, I don't know if I can trust the glue what it gets cold.

Rod holders for the sled. Holds 8 rods and the grooves I drilled along the side of the 2x4 where the holders mount means only need one screw to mount each and the rods are angled away from the sled so they don't interfere with the sled cover, equipment, etc. Cost me $0.00 as I had some PVC scrap already. The little red bungie chord loops over the row of reel mounts when traveling to keep the rods from bouncing out.

Why not add another wheel to the front, then you could just push or pull it.

Made a few DIY JawJackers and I was happy with the results. I tried a couple of designs before this one and kept simplifying the design and then added the telescoping feature to accommodate different length ice rods. This design will work with rods from 38 inches to 24 inches. The back end is 1-Ό" PVC, a 45° and 90° elbows. The front end is 1" pipe. One fits inside the other so it will telescope. I drilled some holes through both pipes once the parts were assembled spaced about 1-½ " apart. There is a pin with a retaining clip on it for quick adjustments. The front T to keep it upright fits inside a 6 gallon bucket, but is big enough so it wouldn't fall in the hole. Trigger is a bent piece of coat hanger.

The trigger took a little while to fine tune. A cut coat hanger has a sharp edge which made it take too much pressure to trip so I had to file it smooth. The two bends in the trigger let you set it for a light bite (tip) or a heavy bite (first bend).

I'm jacked about modifying my sled from all the ideas posted here!

I wanted to share my solution for making rod holders a simple way. I thought about cutting out a notch with various tools and found that if I cut a hole first in the PVC with a hole saw (wood boring bits won't work, trust me) then cutting the pipe, I would end up with 2 nice holders. Just drill the hole in the middle of the two soon-to-be holders. file the edges smooth and mount.

Delirious, nice work!  did you just screw the PVC to the sled?
I might have to do this, i like how the rods are not below the sled line like many other builds.

Yes, I bolted the assembled T's to the rim of the sled before adding the rod holder tubes.

Here are a few more PVC add on items..

Gray cut in half lengthwise, on the front lip, holds the handle of my clam plate auger when packed up..

The rod holder was made from the lighter weight drain pipe pieces, and aluminum, only one bolt so it can swivel..

Both rod holders a cigarette butt cup slide down into slots on the lip of the sled..

I don't have a lazer to compare it to but I don't think so, for the same reason that Lazer covers don't work on moras. Different shape of the blade..

It might work with a mora that's been converted to a lazer..

Remember to put drain holes on the bottom of the ends, so it can't hold water, no matter the position.

What size PVC did you use Ice Scratcher for that Mora cover? I lost my cover and my homemade replacements have not held up well. I'm sick of paying the $10-15 for the horrible replacement cover that instantly breaks or falls off.

On another thread I have a pic of a plastic pail with a bungee. I use that instead of the little red cover that comes with the Mora. With the red cover your fingers come quite close to the blades, risking a cut as happened to my friend.

Mod for my Jet Sled Jr. Tip down rods on the back, jigging rods on the sides, gaf and slush scoop holders, and an auger mount with spring grips to hold the handle. All PVC with stainless hardware except for the 2 spring grips (only because I couldn't find them in SS).  Also made a few homemade Automatic Fishermen out of PVC board and all stainless hardware (even the trigger assembly). Only the removable rod holders are plain steel (again, couldn't find them in SS)

Here's some mods i did to my sled last winter. The end rod holders can be at a slant as is or can be turned to be straight up. Such fun doing mods.

Similar to this except I attached several pieces 5" in length to a 5 Gal. bucket. Didn't use the clamps to attach but used 2 #8 3/4 in. bolts instead. Sorry, no pics.

Hi Bart...  Can't wait to see your next Project!  A little while ago I found an Old Baby Stroller that someone had thrown away. I figured since the wheels and frame looked ok, I would try to reuse it as a method to haul around my Tackle box, fishing rods and a small amount of other stuff I don't want to carry for any distance to that next great fishing spot. So in the future I hope to reuse and rebuild it...
This is what it looked like when I found it and what it looks like for now...
Only time will tell what it turns into... LOL.

No pics but I just finished putting an extension on the handle of my Vex with a rod holder on each side all using PVC...no more bending over to pick it up. Also going to put an extension on the handle of my skimmer ( non-PVC) attached to a retractable key ring ,again, no bending over.

Hi "Iceassin."  Hope all is going well.  The new PVC handle you attached to your Vex as well as rod holder, sounds like it fills its purpose. I understand when you say you made it so you won't have to bend down as much or as far. The older I get, the more I work on items just like that. Making everything higher off the ground... LOL.  Look forward to your photos.

Question for those of you who have PVC racks for your sleds: do you remove them form the sled for transporting to and from the ice? Or do you attach it right to the sled?

Considering doing it myself...leaning toward removable...sorta. Maybe making sleeves of 1.25" PVC attached to the sled (level...or close to the top edge and make permanent) then make the rack(s) of 1" (removable). One at each end or side of the sled designed to hold the augers is my plan.

Interesting thought. i figured if i made it connected and removable, it would be more sturdy sitting on the ice all day

oh, and the smitty is in the works as well. time to up my game a bit on the hard water

Well, it's not PVC...but it is an "add-on". My 4" auger saver...6" X 1" pine disc primed, painted and urethaned. Attached to shaft with 2 rubber sleeves and hose clamps on each side. Now I just need the drill adapter as soon as they become available.

Thinking similar with my jasper circle jig and my router.. make a few out of  polycarbenate.1/2 inch polycarbonate like a 8 or 9  inch for my augers.. them assemble to a clam plate.. that is a awesome idea any how..

My first 'auger keeper'was crude and simple.I just put a loose fitting U-bolt around the shaft. There is no big reason why the keeper needs to be circular unless you count asthetics(sp?)

I agree, actually round ones are heavier, and harder to pack with other gear..

I used a piece of oak when the round plastic one broke..

I think I would rather have a round saver than a square, triangle or any other shape...or a bolt sticking out. I could only imagine the accidents waiting to happen. :o

I actually have the saver tight to the shaft. I drilled the hole large enough to fit over the larger diameter of it...about 1.125 inches. Then there is a spot on the shaft that's about .75 inches. I wrapped enough cloth type electrical tape around that portion of it so that the saver could be "squeezed" over it nice and snug, then attached the pieces of rubber hose and clamps on each side. Pretty rock solid.

..............
Hi "ATC"         My PVC rack is permanently fastened to my sled, I designed it to just fit into the back of my vehicle as one piece. I didn't see the need to have it in two separate units, as I strictly use the sled for ice fishing. ( One person wants to barrow it for their duck hunting trips.)

Well, I think I've finally got it figured out... a carrying case for my (HT cross stick style) tip ups. Materials include: camp chair bag, cardboard box, bubble wrap ,waterproof padding, adhesive and tape. Pics upon completion. ;)

I've already modified my minnow bucket. I moved the handle from the side and mounted it on the lid...screwed the lid into the top of the bucket so it doesn't pull off when carrying...it now slides nicely into a 5 gal. bucket

Hi "Iceassin!"    Man that's an excellent way to protect the hooks and perhaps less tangles  ( if one keeps their hooks all bunched up in the same holder in the plastic hook containers, like myself...)   As well, I'm not sure about your neck of the woods but all the hooks here are to be barbless, so that makes it even easier to use the foam ear plugs. What an awesome idea, thanks!

HI "Birchbeard!"
Nice build, they look great!  Keeps the rods (etc) up out of your way and also keeps them clean from getting all snow and iced up when not in use,
since they have the rod tip down into the PVC holders.  I have mine the opposite... All five out in the open and found a couple of times if i had to
walk aways over the ice with a wind and snow blowing, the rods would ice up and get covered in snow. That's a great idea and build you made. Thanks so much for sharing. It's appreciated.
Have an excellent winter season. We are looking forward to your next builds, keep adding to your sled. Have fun with it.
  Take Care.

I like your set up! How much did cost to build? Do you have a parts list with lengths?

Nope sorry. I just measured and cut as I went.  Fittings are about 40 cents each and two 10ft lengths
of 3/4 PVC at $3.  So not very expensive. It was much cheaper than any ready made bucket holders I could find online.
