st croix legend ice rod for perch
« on: Dec 24, 2010, 08:38 PM »
I am looking to buy a st croix legend ice rod. This will be my perch rod. My question is what model would you guys suggest for perch? I will have to order this on line so I will not be able to look at one in person. I was thinking maybe the medium light? Anybody recommendations would be very appreciated. Thank you.

My .02 would be the medium for hook setting power, that is what I use for crappies and love it.   :icefish:

I would also go heavier with these rods, M but no smaller, the springbobber is sensative enuff, so go with a rod with more back bone. These are great rods you will be happy with it for all panfish

I had a medium light and it was much stiffer than other ML's I've seen. Way too stiff for gills and crappie on little lures. I would suggest the ML, it comes with the pink bobber.

I have a 24" light and that is plenty stiff enough for perch.
It's too stiff for crappie and bluegill.
I'd get the UL for those species.

I would say any of them would work perfect. I have the 24" ul, ml, and a 17" m. Anyone of these would work great. The spring bobbers on them are the Bee's knees. It's all I fish with now. Good Luck  ;D

i have a light 24 and it is a pretty stiff light.the ul is better for crappie and pertch and the l for like walleye.the spring is amazing i advise ordering the 3 other ones with your rod.they cost but if you have a chance to hold one in your hand you see why.

Think about it more in terms of what line you will be fishing.  If you will be fishing 2# line, I'd stick with the Light action.  4#, you could step to the ML action.  Avoid the UL - it's too wimpy/flimsy.  Not a good blank design overall on the Legends I think. Best spring in the game, but the rod blank isn't the greatest.

I have the 24" ML and it is all that I use....I do use a M for deadsticking with 4lb line.
I use 2lb on the St. Croix and love it.
