2000th Post! Top Ice Fishing Tips!
« on: Jan 12, 2014, 03:34 PM »
Well, somehow I hated to see a milestone 2000th post be wasted so here goes...

We've all seen a few good friends over the years at Ice Shanty unexpectedly move on to better fishing. Among them, TGF, LT and then of course more recently, Team Lightning (Leo). They were all close to the hearts and minds of Wyoming and British Columbia . There are certainly other Ice Shanty brothers and sisters from other State forums who are no longer with us as well... So I wanted to use this post to say I'm thinking of them all today, and when I'm on the ice by myself, I know they are near and watching, if not laughing at me!

Credit and thanks goes to all the sponsors and those who own and operate the site, we have a great place to come and visit, share stories, pictures, recipes, equipment mods, product reviews, tall tales and every now and then maybe a squabble or two.

The title may have been a bit misleading if you thought I had any decent fishing tips to share other than being mobile (lol), so if you opened this 2000th post, please share a tip someone may have passed on to you with the rest of us - in memory of those who have gone before us.

Thanks and have a great 2014!

Well in the spirit of the post and I can kind of back to something Lighting Leo said said one when we were just fishing. "Fish one rod right" We were talking about everyone having so much trouble figuring out the tip up bite on Keyhole. Great advise at sunrise and sunset. Forget about playing with the tip ups and putting bait on them. Get something under the transducer and see how the fish react and change accordingly, jump holes and look for fish but most important, "Fish one rod right."

Love it Mike!! Here's a serious non-fishing related "tip" that LT liked to tell me. I have taken it to heard and has made me think twice about some of my decisions.....

My favorite tip, when putting ice anchors in, pre-drill the hole first with a cordless drill.

If anyone has issues marking the same depth on their tip ups, a sweet way is to thread a button (kitty corner holes) on their braid. Use a button small enough to fit on the spool when rolled up. Hold onto the button when sending your line down, find your depth you want and have the button be right at your spool. It will stay in place fish after fish. Works pretty good.... Fishon

There is absolutely no reason to be afraid of the dark! ;) :P

If you don't night fish or haven't in awhile, give it a shot.  Most species I can think of bite at night, except for perch (I've only caught a couple at night)!  So no excuse, give it a shot!  The fishing is usually pretty good, no worse than the mid day bite usually anyhow...  An extra bonus is how quiet it is, doubt you'll have much company on the lake - odds are you'll have it all to yourself!

If you aren't marking or catching fish....move and drill, drill, drill baby. They call it ice trolling.
So many fish, so little time.

I think in the sprit od a new year I would move this to the top and add another tip. When cleaning fish save the eyes of everything you keep, add some kosher salt and keep in a zip lock bag or tupperwear. Always have bait for tipping spoons of jigging rap. Walleye eyes are the best but perch and crappies are right there.
