Didnt know there were different levels of tip ups.  I will be interested to see what people have to say.  Good topic!

Last weekend there was an ice fishing show with John Gillespe Woods and Water on TV and they were fishing with tip-ups in Wisconsin.  The tip-up that they were using were hand made in the USA and according to John they are the best tip-ups out there.  They are also guaranteed for life I believe.  The manufacture is Artic Fisherman Beaver Dam Tip Up.  They are sort of spendy in my book at $25 each.  I am kind of a cheap skate so I prefer the plastic ones that are on sale all the time.

I have been using Artic Tip ups since 1972, and I still have that first one, I guess for me the extra you spend is worth it inthe long run, I have tried all sorts of other types, given as gifts for birthdays or Christmas, but when I always end up returning to my ol beaver dams. The new plastic round tip ups are nice when the snows blowing, but I just cut a round piece if Floor mat to do the same thing with the artic, there slots of differnt ways you can rig an artic as far as sensitivity for tripping the flag. I know there are lots of alternitives out there, but I dont think nothing will compare to the Artic year after year,

I've been using an insulated round tip up for years. I can't remember the name as I'm @ work, but believe it's made by frabill. They work well at not freezing up & completely cover an 8" hole, float orfit tight in 10" hole.

I have been reading the posts on this site for a few days now. Great site! As far as Tip-ups, go Artic Fisherman's Beaver Dam Tip Ups are the best there is. I am not saying that some are not close but I have been using them for over 25 years and other then some flag wear they are still going. The only complaint I have ever heard about them is price, which is pretty petty for something that you will literally be able to pass down once you hang up the ice fishing. I also tried the round plastic ones but for the way we fish tip-ups it only took a weekend to lose the idea. I actually just bought two more Artic Fisherman's. A store in the Twin Cities had them already marked down so I went to Gander Mountain who not only matches the price but also discounted the difference. My Artics ended up being $14 a piece. I couldn't pass that up! Once again great site ! looking forward to reading all the posts in 06.

Do elaborate!  What was the store and how abouts did you ask Gander for the big reduction?
