Meadowpikeman,

Any idea if that brook trout was a Lake Nipigon strain brookie? I know Ontario likes to plant that strain as they say they have the best luck with them. I just planted some more Lake Nipigons into one of my ponds. I've grown them to 6 lbs. 4 oz. by feeding them. They're a blast catching them through the ice. I can jig them right up to the ice hole!

Just curious.

I don't know where they originally came from its possible I suppose, I know we have brood stock here in sask but not to sure where they originated from a few decades ago

O.K. thanks. I appreciate the reply.

What's the biggest brook trout you've caught up there or seen caught?

My personal best is 3.5 lbs. a few lakes around here are capable of fish over 5 lbs i'm sure. seen a few last weekend that were well over 3 i would say, one cranked my jigging rap and i missed the hookset. here's a pic of one of the biggest i've caught caught from the same lake as the last group of ice fishing pics i just posted.

Meadowpikeman,

Nice! God I love the colors of the males in spawning season or just after under the ice don't you?  I'm hoping to get started on seven of them this week, and get them painted in a week or so. Four came out of my pond, 2 from a private hatchery and one from somewhere in Ontario.

A 3.5 lb. brook trout is nothing to sneeze about especially a wild one. Like I said very nice fish.

Yes I do. Here it it is:

Here's a fat brookie and the guy holding it is your's truly right after he got out of bed with morning allergies. I went to check the pond (my private pond) and this guy was having problems so I netted him. I think he was too stressed out after spawning and was probably at the end of his life span.

You mean now much did the brook trout weight? I think it was just under 6 lbs.

I drool over the fish that you catch up there Meadowman, but to think of -13F at this time of year..........maybe living where I do isn't so bad. It will be in the 20's F here. I still have too much to take care of before snow flies. Cold weather is great, but that's frigid.  :pinch:

I still am looking forward to your next trout pics though.  ;D
