Actually, a musky will typically live 8-10 years under prime conditions. That fish was at, or nearing, the end of it's life. No shame in keeping that fish. I love how so many people consider themselves to be fish police. If it's legal and within the season, nobody should criticize or scrutinize anyone for keeping a legal fish. That's their choice. No need to bash someone for keeping a big fish if they please. I would have mounted that bad boy too!

Great fish Joe!

8-10 years?where in a tiny pond?
Muskys in the niagara river and lake erie will and have lived up to 20 year's!!!!!
I guess some people dont understand the reason why these fish grow to be so big is by catch and release, and im not a fish police as you say i am.
It just rubs me the wrong way when some body thinks they have to kill such a great fish just to mount it,when you can get a reproduction made that will last so much long and not kill a musky of that class. But i guess people just wont understand that til there are no more musky's around.

HARDWATER347,

I was trying to stay out of this rant, but I just could not!

I was not targeting Muskies, I was casting stick baits for walleyes, after dark none the less.
1ST off the muskie was bleeding allot.
2ND I did not have a measuring tape with me to take measurements for a replica. I did know that it was the biggest that I had ever caught. In my 25 years of fishing THE RIVER, I have caught 25 to 30 muskies that all have been released.

Did you ever hear the saying? "If you do not have anything nice to say, say nothing at all."

By the way, I'm Northeast Hawg Haulers bass club president and tournament director. I fish local, regional, and national bass tournaments. I would never post negative things about people posting pics of harvested bass, that is their right.

HAVE A NICE DAY!

Sad to see a nice fish gone. I wish all states would close their seasons during the winter and spring till after spawn. Look at the leading muskie states and see why they are tops in the game.

I know you can't help what bites, just sad to see a prime fish gone. BTW bass are prolific reproducers and can withstand harvesting, muskies take years to mature and survival rates are among the lowest.

esox_magnum,
In PA, the Susquehanna River is heavily stocked with muskies by the PA Fish & Boat Commission.

This River is very under utilized for targeting muskies. Every year in the heat of the summer, many, many muskies parish and wash a shore.

I'm sure that by me "HARVESTING" this muskie, the fishery will not collapse.

hardwater347,
Do you really think that?

Let's go by your ageing method.
My muskie, you said 15 years old and in its prime.

Tell me the age of a 5 lb., 21" smallmouth bass out of any of the Great Lakes.

I doubt any true muskie guy is jealous he caught that, I'm not. What burns us is the public mishandling from someone who claims to be somewhat of a muskie guy, kept or not. We treat our fish better than that even in the event they die on the hookset.

As far as age, we net fish every spring and find many in the 15-20 year old class and muskies do have up to a 30 year life span. If you have so many summer floaters I would think your DNR would realize it's wasting money ( and lots of it) missmanaging a non or under utilized fishery. I also know from living in PA the attitude I found was, if it's not trout its trash.

If your going to display to the public dead or not at least show proper handling. IE holding vertical by the gills is not proper.

Do you not understand i am far from jelouse!!!!!!!!!
Ive released bigger ski's.my biggest todate is 54.5
Esox you pretty much hit the nail on the head with the if its not trout its trash in pa.
They dont respect the ny waters why would they respect theres?
Im a very dedicated musky fishermen,i am 100% catch and release and the musky organization i belong to got the lake erie/upper river on the american side size limit bumped from 48 to 54 for the reason stated these fish take so long to get to the legal size there not worth keeping anyways.
And im glad pa stocks musky's like they do as i fish glen dale res, kinzu every year and every fish i catch is pic'd and released.

WOW!

esox,
Where did you get the info that I was "kind of a muskie guy"? I have not and do not target muskies. They just seem to like the lures that I throw for big walleyes. All of the muskies that I have caught at THE RIVER have come while I was targeting walleyes.
Miss handling, right, it was allready dead. Even as big as it was, I would have let it go if it was not bleeding as bad as it was.
RELEASING ANY FISH TO DIE IS A TRUE WASTE!
Yes, many dead floaters in the heat of the summer. Two muskies that I know of that were reported to the PA F&BC being dead on THE RIVER in the past were state record class muskies.
That is probably one reason PA F&BC changed our regs to open all year and increased the size limit to 40"

hardwater,
You still did not answer my age question for the bass.
How did posting a pic get to bashing all PA fisherman?
PA F&BC does waste allot of money, especially on TROUT.

Now I will bash a few of you.

Most muskie and fly fishermen are like elitist, they think their **censored** doesn't stink and everyone else is allways in the wrong.

PEACE OUT!

For a fish like a muskie, you need to support its body weight. Holding it with the gills puts massive strain on it, and its internal organs can be damaged. They are designed to be horizontal.
