What is the best ice shelter?
« on: Nov 11, 2008, 07:53 PM »
I'm thinking about purchasing a shelter and i want to get the best for the least.
I want one for myself and mostly my 2 kids.
I saw an Eskimo quickfish 3 man for $200.00.
This seems decent.
any ideas?

i'm looking at a 2 person flip over myself, mainly for the convenice of the sled, my father and my fishing buddy both have suitcase models that are awkward to say the least to pull across the ice. i'm really interested in the guide by clam, or trekker by frabill.  Waiting till the local stores putout floor models before i commit to a purchase.  i'm also going to check out cabelas and ct-outfitters as well, both within 30 minutes of me.

I want a 2 person shelter because my wife has shown a real interest in fishing this year(she bought her own license) and i would like to keep the momentum rolling.  She's not much of a winter person, but a shelter would certainly help to get her on the ice.

i got one of the shapell 4000's a few years back. its nice but you MUST have a pickup to transport it, too big to fit in the back of most SUV's. one of the nice things about it is it has ski's built into the bottom that pop down. theres a bucket holder molded to the bottom of it as well. think i payed a little over 300 for it. pretty happy with it to this point. the only problem was there was no pre-fab holes drilled for anchors (and they dont disclose it in the paper work)

it wasent an issue of finding a spot to drill the holes it was an issue of bringing it out for an all nighter in rediculious wind 2 hrs after it was delivered. long story short i snuggled with my auger and bait bucket all night so the thing wouldnt fly away everytime i went to check a hole. As for the bait thing i'll keep ya posted, looking for a job before i hunt too hard for bait.

the cheapest setup i have seen is a guy with 3 2x4x8 and a tarp. he made triangle into the wind and attaches the tarp. he sat inside out of wind and in the sun. it was toasty.

I have a shappell 4000 - it works well and the 2 large windows are nice. A little heavy to pull through deep snow though. - Porter

I have a very simple answer - One you've built yourself!  If you build it yourself you know it is the way you want it!

My 2 cents worth...

No actually, that is just another tip up lined up with it in the distance.  I remember because we go one flag the entire day with like 25 traps in the water.  But you will note the two empty 30 packs, so the day wasn't a complete loss.

I have never had a shelter. But they look more aerodynamic than some of the tall rectangular ones. What if it was lagged into the ice?
Thanks

I'm picking up the Clam 5600 tonight.  Fits 3, 65lbs, can be pulled or strapped to a sled.  Nice zippers, plenty of head and sholder room (we're all <6' so plus for us..)  pricey at $360, but ok since I have no where to build one and two of us are spliting the cost.

Shappell 3000 not to bad. 45lb, no ski's though.  The skis apparently do not work in deep snow anyhow so strap to a sled.  Does not appear to be compact when folded. Be a tight fit in an SUV.  The windows are thin and I thought the shack material was a bit light.  Bright side $230 new.   However if you went with the Shappell 4000, a bit bigger and better windows for the money.(again need PU or roof racks to     transport

Thats my 2 cents.  ;)

Hey Cracka, I have had the eskimo quick fish 3  for about 3 years now.  I love it!  It is light and sets up in less than 2 minutes!  It comes with cleats to tie it down on those windy days.  You do need 2 people to set it up when it is really windy, but if its not windy, one person is all you need.  So far it has been very durable, and very warm inside.  The new ones out now have a better doorway than the one that I have which is fine anyway.  3 years ago I think I paid $170 so $200 sounds like a pretty good price.  Also, it comes in a backpack so it is super easy to take out onto the ice.  I think mine weighs around 20-25lbs maybe?  It is also easy to put away after a long day of drinking.. I mean fishing.  ::)  Good luck in your decision!  Maybe we will meet up sometime and compare shelters.
