good news for the Walleye Challenge
-
anyone been off of broadalbin yet?
-
I am currently on the main lake in broadalbin area drilling 6in everywhere.
-
I will be heading out towards Vanderberg's point tomorrow. Will give details when I return on ice and conditions.
-
well, drilled about 6.5 inches by vanderbergs. middle of the lake about 3.5 to 4. took the sled out to sand island to try out new tow bar for calm flip-over. Just be safe out there. caught 2 eyes, not much size. only stayed for about an hour.
i guess its time!!!!!
-
i'd come up and fish it tomorrow if anyone is interested
-
There is some snow on the ice and as of Friday the campsite gate was open....h2l
-
Be careful on the gsl , it's already claimed it's first life of the season. Keep an eye out for ice heaves and rocks if your on a sled or atv .
-
I would just be walking and pulling my gear, and looking for northerns so it's not like i need to get into the deep stuff
-

You have more info...h2l
-
I'm not 100% sure on the details . I guess a kid took his new sled out for the first time on Friday nailed a rock fast enough to get ejected 75 feet, i think they took him to the hospital and pronounced him dead .i think it was near lanzis. I grew up near the lake and I also have a boat I keep on the lake . And it's very tricky once they lower the lake . You can think your on the ice but you might just be on a flat that could have huge rocks sticking out . With the snow blending everything together you don't see it until it's too late . All you can do is play it safe . It's a big lake. A few people died this summer on the lake. Best thing to do is try to not to go out by yourself in open water or hard water .if sh#t hits the fan when your by yourself it can be miles to walk or swim before you can get to a safe place or help .

Wanna go tomar hopefully from Mayfield beach or lanizs .. anyone know the conditions

Is Great Sacan fishable tomorrow? Looking for a place to take my son.

How much does it weigh?
-
how deep do you guys ususally set up on sacandaga. I fish toga alot and usually setup in 9-14 FOW on the weedlines but i know sacandaga doesnt have much for weeds? any luck shallow like 5 FOW or do you fish closer to the breaks?
-
How much does it weigh?
Weighs about 700lbs.
And bass hunter, I'm currently set up on a break that is 15fow to 2fow. Have good luck here every year.

Can you park at wallys or the beach or do you have to come in from the state launch. I keep a boat in that bay during the summer. I catch eyes off the dock all the time

Yup. No problem there. And to pay Wally's back, stop in for a beverage of your choosing.

Hey stranger it's darren. Had to make a new profile, forgot all my old info. Anyways moved to sacandaga and got the perm out. Have to get together soon. Send me a message and we will catch up
-
It's called the flipp inn and it's in northville , it's near sportisland pub . It's just before the northville bridge going north , if you google it you can find all the info

Shooting down a drone or knocking it out of the air is a crime and people can take legal action . And it's hard to say you didn't do it when your on camera. I see them all the time on the lake . I don't see what the big deal is. People can fly them around the lake all they want . Maybe you set up in his landing zone lol . Welcome to America, land. Of the free !
-
Hopefully this warm and rainy weather doesn't screw the ice up to bad. ??? ???
-
Forgot to mention...to the person in Northville flying his/her drone over me and my set.... F off. The next time a drone hovers 5 feet over my shanty, I will clip it's wings so to speak....
Just checking to see what kind of tip-up you use....h2l
-

Your free to do alot of things that could result in confrontation, most people dont out of RESPECT. If someone hovers a drone overy shanty they will get a hand gesture suggesting they go away, next action the drones in my sled. Theres no reason to fly a drone close to someone who your not out with. They have as much right to fly it as i do to not have it flown around me.
Back to fishing. I fished out of sport islan on christmas eve. Went out in front of what looks like some new appartment buildings and fished that hole on navionics and anither break further up the shoreline. I got cut off twice and caught a 6 inch perch. They were the only thre marks for the day and my buddy got a 16inch eye. All this action at our first two holes and in the first half hour of the day then nothing. Just dont know this lake or have a lifetime to waste trying to learn it.

Fisherman harrassment is also against the law.
-
I'm working on a tip up to drone Missile, the flag goes up once the drone is down. I agree Lowa If its in my arms reach its to close, not to say I would wreck it,but fearing for ones life gives you the right to protect your self.you never know whats mounted to a drone. Now not only do we bring electronics to find fish under the ice, I have to buy a radar unit with a signal jamming unit LOL
-
A couple could be moved about 5/6 feet and the bait would be over a stump with some of my jigs on it...h2l
-
H2L Are you giving away spots?? lol
-
Maybe we will see you guys crying on your tube under the drone lol you should get a " no fly zone " sticker for the top of your shanty so it doesn't get damaged by the dangerous drone props .
-
Or maybe you found your drone culprit....
-
lol it wasn't me but I have a good idea who it is. He posts videos all the time of the lake they are pretty cool. He takes pictures of our boats on the lake for us ;D
-
H2L Are you giving away spots?? lol
I have been known to give up a few, but only to guys that can catch fish....lol...h2l
-
I am planning on trying to fish the Sacandaga a bit this year, and was wondering if anybody on here uses navionics. I am wondering how much you have to adjust for the lake being drained down in the winter. I want to try and find some spots to target before heading out thanks.

I use Navionics pretty regularly for fishing GSL and other lakes. It definitely helps identify areas that may hold fish, but it's tough sometimes when they drop the water levels. I usually find a spot on Navionics that looks promising and drill a hole and check the water depth. If it's too shallow for the species I'm targeting I usually just move around that area until I find the depth I'm looking for. It's worked fairly well for me in the past as I went from catching maybe 1 or 2 fish every couple trips and getting skunked a lot, to catching at least 1-2 fish per trip and occasionally hauling double digits on good days. I primarily tip up fish so I'm sure if I was jigging those numbers would be a lot higher. It at least gives you an idea of where to start looking for fish so you're not just out there relying on dumb luck.
-
Went out of the state park by the Northville bridge tonight. Ice wasn't too bad, but did have some water on top. Stuck it out until about 7. I caught 2 eyes jigging, 1 about 8... inches and 1 just over 15. Not one single flag though. :-\

How much ice up there? I'm down at vanderbergs and have about 8 with half inch of water on top. Still got the perm shanty out. Should be fine. Still cold at night.
-
I spend a lot of time on the lake and have never seen one..h2l
-
i like when drones fly close.
-
i think I'm going to buy a drone
-
I gotta say this about the drone situation. My buddy has one and uses it alot. It is really cool to get some ariel shots of fishing, boating etc. They are an amazing piece of technology and really fun to play with. You can also make a pretty cool video to some music with one.
That being said there are (and always will be) the a holes who take things too far. Getting within a few feet of someone that you are not with is not only dangerous but just plane stupid. Frankly if you want to pull that crap on me than you deserve to loose your toy. If it is in my personal space to the point that I feel is unsafe, I will take action. I don't give a crap if it is considered wrong or not. My buddy (the drone pilot) agrees with me completely on this.
-

I see what you did there, nice pun!
All kidding aside, i can't agree with you more. The potential photos and videos a drone can provide is pretty cool, but i would recommend that you stay clear of stranger's privacy with them
-
i think I'm going to buy a drone
I've already got a slingshot, and I'm accurate with it, its already been packed in my rod bag.
I have a drone. I would never hover close, directly over someones shanty, especially not for an extended period of time. Its stupid. Its an A-hole move.
-
Glock makes a nice slingshot ;D

I still don't see the issue of people flying a drone over an ice shanty . People fly drones over my boat all season it's pretty cool I check the YouTube channel all the time looking to see if he got us in his video.
-

I don't think anyone would have a problem with a pass over. But if you are going to hover 5 feet over the top of a person or flip shanty for more than like 10 seconds, thats just plain rude. You wouldn't do that to the average person on the street, just cause i'm ice fishing doesn't mean i deserve less respect.
-
Little thing like that don't bother me. I don't worry about drones . I worry about drunk people crashing into my boat or shanty with a sled and how to keep a big fish from snapping my line !

Isn't there enough ice...h2l

One small pike today but it was a bigger fish than what I had on my tip up so I'm happy. 8" in Sunset Bay with a little slop on top that was starting to freeze. Back out there again tomorrow looking for the parents.
-
Nice Brown, Bass....h2l
-
nice brown! and a walleye to boot, and both on the same body of water can't beat GSL.

Picked up my tourney tag today!!! Can't wait

Well we fished both afternoons this weekend with 8-9 inches of ice,got a couple decent pike,a few keeper eyes and some big perch to 14 inches, not to bad for the dead sea

I have never fished the great Sacandaga, I would love to give it a try this winter but know nothing about the lake and were to fish for walleyes. i was hoping you guys could give me some advise on where to fish. I,m not looking for secret spots just some general info. like where to get on and what kind of structure to look for . Any info would be great. I have fished walleyes on Oneida lake for years and know the technique. just not familiar with this very large body of water. Thank you in advance for any info. Also what bait would you recommend for tip up fishing walleyes/

Southern end of the lake has good access at Wally World...Aka Driftwood Park. A little further north you can access the lake at Northampton camp site (state park). Or Broadalbin boat launch on the other side of the lake. There's several places to get on the lake. We use shiners and suckers
-
Thank you for the info Booker!! it's very helpful. Tight lines my friend.
-
hardwaternubie53, Thanks for the great info, we had a great day Saturday thanks to you!!! thanks again!!
-
2 shorts today and on 16" keeper town northern around 20-24" with fresh chew marks on them I need bigger bait lol ;D

I don't understand most of that lol....I'm going to give the gsl another shot tomorrow hopefully I catch something !!
-
Two short walleye under15" a 16"keeper walleye two northern pike that were between 20 and 24 inches that had chew marks on them where a bigger fish tried to eat them and I didn't have any bait that was between 20 and 24inches so I need bigger bait I guess
-
How's the snow off Driftwood on the ice. Can only hoof it so I need to make a decision of where to get in this weekend. Thanks for any help..
Kim
-
No snow on ice. After this rain and warm spell, it will be a slushy mess. You may be better off coming on by Laskys marina. Plowed road all the way to ice. Just don't park and block the road because it is a dead end
Hope this helps.
-
Ice was good 8-10inches , seen a few trucks out on it. Got one pike .ice is slick covered in water 1-3 inches of slush. Mostly water
-
Hi guys!!! Im planing to come next week fish gs i will be staying in Northville....is that big bay good to fish or i will have to go somewhere else ?
-
Ice was great today. After tomorrow it could change with the rain and warm weather
-
I saw that daves is closed now what is my next best option for bait in the morning. I am going out of northville, thanx.

ddiamond that does help. May try getting on there. Thanks. bigfish1212 you can also hit Food & Fuel, they have minnows and other too..........
Kim
-
Ill tell you what, i picked up bait at food and fuel a few weeks ago. My buddy left with the bait and put it on his back porch. A week later we lost 1 fish. 1. Needless to say i was pretty impressed.
-
With this weather and next 2 weeks in 30's and 40's, looks like I'll be dragging the shanty off :(
-
No eyes or northerns today but I found the smallies, jigged up 6 out of one hole through out the day.

-
Around 10 inches -12 around the edge of the lake 8-9 towards the middle about a mile or so out ,didn't go to far past that , after the warm temp that could be different . It went from 3 inches of snow in the morning to 2 inches of water towards the end of the day

Thx man. I was up there today and watched the snow turn to water. You wouldn't catch me driving my truck on 10" of ice!!! That's nuts!!!!!!!'
-
Any one know how the ice held up over the last few days? I was at deer island on wednesday and the snow was melting pretty fast. Any info would be great.
-
Still 8-10 in the bays. Just checked shanty. Lot of slush and water on top though.
-
Calling for sub zero night tonight and below freezing temps till Tuesday. Should button up in a day or 2 and build by the next warm up.

Pretty sure that was us out there, were you on the red quad? We had an awful day, managed an effin pickerel. Needless to say there is one less pickerel in the lake. I told my buddy to take the car, he wanted to take the F350 Diesel.

what the best bait minnows, hunts or ice silcice for walleye

Awesome hoping to get there for the first time this year

Not looking good at all after Monday night!

We didn't get back out there this weekend, heard of a side by side going through at Sinclair point last night, and some open water to the left of the boat launch. Should be interesting to see what the weather bring up to the challenge. The night time lows for next week are supposed to be in the single digits....We shall see what happens....
-
Yeah I didn't go back this week. Went up north for lakers !
-
11 inches where I was today slightly more in some spots
-
Plan on hitting Great Sacandaga for the first time ever on Thursday wondering if you guys can point me in a direction where I can get on some pike, eyes, and perch. Also any bait shops in the area as I have about an hour drive so would rather get bait near the lake. I'm Thinking the north broadalbin side. Also wondering about public access spots along the lake as I will be on foot

you can get on at the broadalbin state boat launch, and i get all my bait from jims in mayfield.

Anyone get out on the ol' sac today? Saw the sheriffs dept put out a warning regarding open water at sinclair point, lanzis and sunset bay.

Be careful!

I steer clear of sinclair. I've seen guys drop through there in the dead of a cold winter...I'm pretty sure I know that group that sunk the side by side. Sucks and I don't wish it on anyone.
-
Last week there was a side by side and what looked like a small SUV driving around out near there. I saw video of that area today looks like a huge pressure crack.
-
What do you guys think about the walleye challenge? Think it happens or no.
-
Hopefully we still have ice by then. This week looks like it's going to kill it !
-
Looking to go ice fishing this weekend. I saw reports of pressure crack but didn't know where they were in relations to Scout Island. Anyone know how the ice is around the bays there? Thank you for any intel.
-
what do people use as a setup for transporting fish to get weighed in for the contest, the last time I caught a walleye is was below 0 and the fish froze within minutes. its a couple miles to lanzi's from where I was fishing. thanks.
-
Ice chest has worked for us...h2l
-
yup. use a good sized cooler filled with water
-
With everyone concerned about the ice conditions, really if you use common sense you will be fine out on the sacandaga.pressure ridges form every year, open up and re-freeze.with a little bit of caution you can get around the lake safely,we did all weekend.sinclair point is always unsafe,a friend put my wheeler through there last year, but that was strictly because he was in the dark and wasn't sure where he was.
-
The walleye challenge was cancelled last year and could have been held in February. Does anyone else think that they should have a February rain date for this contest? I personally would rather fish the contest than have it become a raffle. Especially two years in a row!
-
Wish I could have got in.
-
In my opinion so much work and planning, goes into an event of this size, Lanzy's has to have food, drinks for 3000 people, that more than likely have been ordered already, $75,000 worth of prizes need to be awarded. I along with 5 of my friend from Ice shanty Ct.make a weekend out of this tourney, staying over from Friday to Sunday made reservations more than 2 months ago, one of my friends flies in from Virginia. with 10 days to go its not canceled yet. if it is I'll take my chances against 1750 others in a raffle,Jan28th A tournament of this size sells out in 10days, It seems to be very popular the way it is.
-
Ron; beer, food, friends and you may even catch a walleye....lol What more can you ask for?....h2l
-
The point is 1800 people sign up to fish in a contest . If you wanted a raffle play the lotto
-
The point is 1800 people sign up to fish in a contest . If you wanted a raffle play the lotto
1750 enter this contest and would bet only 1200-1300 actually fish it, others enter for the "lotto" chances. I say don't fix what's "NOT" broken.
-
I would bet that those numbers are high if the weather in not perfect, for some..h2l
-
if no one fishes at a fishing contest I'd say it's broken ha ha 2 years in a row. They should just have a walleye day raffle!
-
1 cancellation in 8 years aren't bad odds. And our group fished last year until 12 then partied. Will do the same this year if it's cancelled. Lake is safe, people just need to be smart.
-
Its not looking too good for this year
-
I believe Lou, and the rest, do a great job with the challenge and if it needed to be changed "they" know best what to do. If it's not broke it doesn't need to be changed. We've been in ALL of the Challenge contests and it has been organized and run great every year including last year!! Thank you Lou, and the rest. Keep up the good work.
-
While I believe the ice is and will be fine, and will still fish regardless if the contest is on or not, the contest needs to be held in mid February. This isn't your run of the mill 300 registrant local firehouse derby. There are a lot of out of towners in this contest that are not used to the lake. Many of which drive out on the ice in the dark in the morning.
-
posted on fb Beaver Ross and louey will be checking ice conditions in the morning and make a decision tomorrow whether to hold the walleye challenge.
-
Very good post Pike...h2l
-
Why is the Challenge being debated? It will happen or it won't. Leave it up to Lou. He knows what he is doing. I just now spoke with my buddy who lives at the lake. He says he is cutting 11 to 13" of ice all over, with one inch of slush. Lou is aware of the conditions and will make a wise decision.
-
I don't see a debate going on....h2l

I do not think its a debate, The powers that be will make the right decision, fishing or not they will give out the money and prizes, Maybe in the future they will hold it later in the yr.thats all we are saying. The debates over Trump Won. I'm going to call out my local guide H2L to put us on the right spot.
-
I have already given you most of my best spots. Just use them wisely...lol...h2l

hit the dead sea today and now I know why it gets its name..... I did mark fish just couldn't get them to commit. Also a guy drove his truck out to beacon and back
-
Ha ha yeah. I was talking to a guy at a bait shop last week. I don't ice fish gsl too much ,I never catch much one or 2 fish at the most .So I asked how's he's doing. Said he had a shanty on the lake but hasn't caught one fish in the past 4-5 weeks . It's a hard lake to fish because of the water drop. It's the only lake I've gone to this year and got skunked ! I keep a boat on the gsl and I'll catch 5-6 eyes off the dock each week no problem . I guess you just need to know the tricks !

Yea with the water level being down ~8ft the spots I picked out on the contour map weren't exactly where i wanted to be lol so kinda winged it a bit. Was hoping to get on some eyes but that didn't happen. Wish I had a camera so I could've at least seen what was looking but not bitting
-
Yeah i did the same thing. I have the map on my phone had a bunch of marks one say and didn't catch anything . Went back the next week with my camera got zero marks but got one pike . I drilled about 60 holes run and gun style

Yea thats what i did today after i found out about the water level idk how many holes I drilled but I'm sure it was around 50... the Milwaukee and lazer auger held up perfectly and didn't even burn through the battery

Heard today that they're already talking about contingency plans for the walleye challenge. Same as last year, raffle at Lanzi's instead of rescheduling. Hopefully Mother Nature doesn't put us through another cancellation.
-
Why wouldn't they just delay it .. they would get the same turn out either way . It's ashame . Aswome time .. or make rule no trucks or cars on the lake
-
I checked Weather.com and the lows are in the 20's all next week with highs in the mid to upper 30's. With 10"-11" of ice on the lake now I have a hard time believing it won't be fishable next weekend for the tourney.
-
The lake has been very productive this year I feel.4 straight weeks of multiple fish and have not fished more than 6 ft of water
-
Anyone had any success in the southern part of the lake? How has the ice held up with the warmer temps?
-
anyone hear anything about the contest??
-
Nothing yet
-
Just got word that Lou and Beaver will make the decision tomorrow.... fingers crossed everyone!!!
-
Fingers crossed for the guys I know going....
-
Anyone hear anything yet?? Heard reports it's cancelled but haven't been confirmed by anyone
-
I just called fuel n food and no decision will be made until Monday now.
-
Just read its canceled on fb walleye challenge
-
Fulton County Area News Facebook page reports the walleye challenge is officially canceled per event official Beaver Ross.

New to this site... Heading up to the Great Sac for a long weekend on the ice for our annual trip with old friends. This is our 10th year in a row. Fishing from 1/26 to 1/28 between the "I Go Inn" restaurant and the Batchelorville Bridge. Last year was a little warm for this time in January, but we still had a good 8" all around that area (same weekend as the cancelled 2016 Challenge). Been reading the reports and checking the temps for the week. If anyone could give a specific ice report for that area, that would be a great help. Thank you... Good luck to all!
-
Last year (Jan. 2016) was our most productive. In 2 days of fishing we managed 6 walleye and 2 pike. Largest 'eye 19 1/2", largest pike 31". All fish released except 1 pike for fish cakes. All fish caught between 8 - 14ft of water, although we fished all depths up to 31ft.
-
Ice report would be good thanks
-
Now that you have three posts, you have access to the reports and conditions board where all Lake and ice information is posted.

Was wondering if anybody has been to North Hampton part of sacandaga. How much ice and is it safe enough to still go on after the warm weather
-
I'm looking to fish Great Sacandaga Reservoir this weekend. Does anybody have any tips on where to go to find trout in the lake? This will be my first winter fishing in the area. Thanks.
-
Go to price chopper, buy a trout, then put it on your line and drop it in the hole, then reel it in. Best shot at targeting a trout on sacandaga. Not sure why anyone who doesnt really know the lake would waste the time and money to fish it.
-
Most Trout become Pike snacks but I've heard of a few being caught in the Batchelorville Bridge area

How does one begin to know a lake without spending the time and money fishing it? Like I said, I am new to the area and am looking for tips. Sorry to waste you time in asking for some friendly advice.

I've gotten some trolling for walleye in the open water but through the ice I think I would target the northern arm as previously mentioned and just try tip-ups set not far under the ice with waxworms or worms if you can get them somewhere. If they behave like stocked trout in most places that would be a good way to try and you'll likely find them in almost any depth.

I got a rainbow trout this past August in the middle of the day jigging for walleye near scout island. They are in there but are few and far between. For ice fishing id personally set up shallow near an inlet and hope for the best.

Thanks for the advice tipupjeff521 and slipbob. I will certainly take that into consideration. Catching any sort of fish is fun, I just prefer to eat trout. They are also what I am used to fishing for, having moved here from Colorado.

there is a ton of nice rainbows in Sacandaga.... spent a good 10 years of my life with my grandfather fishing for them there when he was alive and had the house on the lake...granted, this was during open water season but if they are there during open water, they are there through the ice....and I mean we caught ALOT of big ones over 20". Natives and stockers. However, we always caught them in deep water, or over deep water and always caught them in the main channel near bach. bridge....on worm harness's. This was prior to 2008 (when he passed away). Haven't walleye fished/rainbow fished the lake since he passed.....soooo I'm not up to date on the current rainbow population, but it seemed like it used to be impressive.
I remember one year we couldn't get away from them if we tried.
-
I've only seen one caught through the ice and it was over 20 ft of water straight out from the Broadalbin boat launch on a tip up with the bait placed about 6 inches under the ice. It was a 24 inch rainbow, a really beautiful fish.

They are great looking in that lake. The colors really pop.
Thats how we used to catch them during open water season. We would get them usually about 15-20' down over 35-40' of water in the main creek channel... Makes sense during ice season that they would move up. Much like the lakers, salmon etc.
-
Spent the weekend (last) fishing for walleye. Only got one keeper. Very slow. Two guys came in and set up on me in the dark on Sunday. They didn't see my set up in the dark. They got two at sunrise, yards from my set. It is the luck of the draw on that lake.
-
Ok so apparently iv ruffled some feathers. Let me explain. You learn sacandaga lake by fishing it with someone who knows what there doing, its that simple. I am very close friends with a man who runs charters on the lake and im sure some of you probably know this man but i will keep his name off this forum. He places in every tournament the lake has (for eyes) during open water and fishes it every day. If your new to the area and dont have anyone pointing you in the right direction for walleye your going to do just that, spend a lot of time, and a lot of money trying to figure it out. Its like they say about deer hunting, if you want to kill big bucks you have to hunt land that holds big bucks. So i guess its like adirondack deer hunting vs southern ny deer hunting. You can hunt for years and not see a deer. You can fish sacandaga all season and if you don't know where to go don't be surprised if you don't catch a thing. Unlike many other lakes within an hour or two of sac that hold large populations of fish and don't take a lifetime to figure out. As for the trout, my source has told me the same thing that most of the guys on here have said, you might catch one randomly while trolling for eyes but to target them there is pretty much a waste of time. But hey for some of you i guess fishing for hours days weeks months to catch one fish is worth it, for me , it is not. Enjoy the dead sea, ill be back when the ice melts to catch smallies, because in MY OPINION, the smallies and a chance at a monster pike are all the lakes good for. And even the smallies run small.
-
Sacandaga has smallies in it?!
-
come on SS, lol they have some good size ones from time to time
-
Step, I agree with almost everything you say. Lots of SMB, some very nice pike. Trout are there but not in great numbers. After 60+ years of fishing walleyes on this lake I have learned a lot about them. You have to find the "spot on the spot". Even those good spots from years past change from year to year. There are more bait fish today than there was years ago. The walleyes move more. The walleyes aren't big but the numbers are there if you put in your time and pay attention to where and how you are catching them. I jig fish most of the time so when I find a spot that is producing I go to other spots with the same make up. Most times I find fish, if the bait fish are there. Even at my old spots that aren't producing I usually find the walleyes close by. You really do have to know the lake but knowing the FISH is just as important. I have always been willing to show and tell others where and how I am fishing as long as I know they don't keep them ALL. I have lots of thoughts on how to make this a better walleye lake but some don't like to hear it. It would help a lot if NYS were to stock some fry into the lake. I know many won't make it but the natural spawn is so hit and miss in the spring, depending levels in the streams....h2l
One other thing: A lake can only support so many fish. Most dependent on the lakes size. This lake is very small in the winter, compared to its size in the summer...h2l

That's all i was saying. If i moved to the area and didn't know a lot about the local lakes, i would hope someone would tell me that sacandaga is extremely difficult to learn find someone to take you and show you or go somewhere else.
-
I feel Sacandaga is actually pretty easy to learn if you have and really know how to use Navionics combined with good sonar. The mapping detail is very precise for that lake and once you find the depth and pattern it's easy to move from spot to spot and scan for fish with the sonar before you even wet a line. It's one of the few lakes where you can catch 20 or 30 or more walleyes in the middle of the day all summer long and also very easy to get skunked. Not a lot of big fish but there are plenty of them. Had some incredible number days there with walleye jigging and trolling.
-

I appreciate the clarification. Your original post came off as more antagonistic and inhospitable than you might of intended. I am still going to go and fish the lake this weekend. We shall see what happens. Even if I get skunked it is still enjoyable to be out on hard water.
-
I keep a boat on the gsl on the mayfield side. I spends most weekends on the lake .In the mornings And nights I'll fish for eyes off the docks Or in my dinghy I catch them all the time .catch a ton of smallies without even trying I'd say I catch 3-5 fish each day within probably an hour. Now ice fishing..... I went 3 times so far this year and got one pike. Talked to about 15 other people and they all got skunked . So to me it's been a waste of time . I'd rather go to another body and catch 20 plus fish her day
-
come on SS, lol they have some good size ones from time to time
Sacandaga smallies are bait fish compared to what I'm used to catching....
But when my wife wants to go out fishing for once on the boat, we go to sacandaga and I give her a suspending jerkbait and she catches smallies. It's fun for her and the boys. She did catch a 3lb smallie there last year. They fight great, just prefer putting my time in on more quality lakes over quantity.
-
Im with ss on that one. When my buddies want to take their boats to sand island, i meet them there at first light and fish until 10 with them. Get my fill of small fish and go home before the "Pleasure Boaters" fill the lake.
-
I've never caught anything big off sand island. I always see a bunch of small boats fishing around the island in the morning when I'm going to the island in the morning. They like to sit in the channel and get mad when people drive by . You see arms and rods in the air .. ha ha
-
I don't fish sand island, i don't party on sand island, just merely a blip on the lake in my eyes.
-
I've never caught anything big off sand island.
I too have never caught anything big, but sure have caught good numbers there. Both smallies and walleyes. Open water. Its always been my first stop from the Broadalbin launch. My father and I found something over there about 15 years ago that always seems to hold fish.
-
Yeah I spend a lot of weekends on sand island and I'll fish off my dinghy In morning and I catch a bunch of smallies off the sand bar drops , something to do in the morning if I'm not too hung over ha ha
-
People actually fish sand island?
too many other quality area's to waste time there.
-
People fish around it near the rocks

That's one man's opinion. I've fished that area and done well too granted I've open water fished it 4 times. A narrow mind in regards to spots is a great way to catch less fish.
-

a narrow mind on sacandaga for smallies, isn't that much of a narrow mind. You can literally go anywhere in that lake and catch 1.5-2lbers...for those numbers, I prefer to head to the clump of islands going towards northville....for quality, I stay at the bach. bridge, and farther to the town of day.
I don't look for numbers. I look for quality...the catch with that is, you DO catch less fish....because numbers aren't where the big ones are ;)
-
I've caught big ones in back bays behind the island on rocks , I'd rather catch 20 fish mixed than 2 or 3 big ones

I'm going up tomorrow. Hopefully I land on some fish. I got a 3 foot pike 3 weeks ago on my first line down and nothing the rest of the day ha ha well hooked a an eye but it came off

tons of smallies in that lake. fishing is was decent close to bridge
-
Batchellerville Bridge Or northville

Batchellerville Bridge Or northville
Both is good.
fish are bigger at batch. bridge.
-
One thing you have to understand is this is a reservoir!!!!!! Not a lake. That's why day to day fishing is different due to the constant changing water level. The main channel people refer to is very tricky to follow but takes years of practice to learn since at one time it was a river. Topo maps give a reasonably
close detail to the contour of the bottom. You have at certain spots a 40' drop off or a very little drop off. Only years of practice in the open water will help you these "honeyholes" depending on the season. That's a main reason why people will give general directions to various spots to locate fish. Good Luck................

What show was that? Would like to take a look at it...h2l

SS, I see you removed your post about the fishing show on CBS and WFN...h2l

Sending you a PM.... no point in bringing it up on here...that's why it was removed.

Heading to the GSL for the first time tomorrow morning and was wondering if Lanzi's allowed parking access to go out on the lake? Or is there any other parking access spot on the west side of the lake? A friend of mine said to go out from Wally's but I don't know about that, it looks like a walk to the lake from there. Thanks for any info and tight lines!

Lanzi's has a huge plowed out parking area for snowmobiliers and fisherman. you should be good to go.

we found over a foot of ice coming out of the camp ground across to the east side

Went off the broadalbin boat launch today. One foot plus ice all over

how'd you make out? Any fish?
-
Would like to give Great Sacandaga a try tomorrow. Would like to get after some walleye. Anybody willing to show me the ropes or point me towards the better access sites? I'm coming from Cobleskill and am quite a ways from my stomping grounds. Any info would be highly appreciated.
-
I got skunked yesterday . Talked to a group of guys with 30 some flags out. They only got 2 fish all day from 5 am -4pm
-
We had a tough day out there yesterday as well a few jumbo perch but that was it plenty of ice 12 plus out of the campground
-
Fished today. 2 keeper eyes and dumped another one at the hole. Also iced a northern just shy of 40 inches. Not too bad for my first time on the lake without any "local" knowledge. Walleye were pretty thin.
-
Fished the GSL for the first time on Saturday. Got there early in the morning and I was really slow to start but as the day wore on it got more productive and we caught 3 walleye, two perch and one smallmouth between the 3 of us. Not bad for our first time there and were happy enough with the outcome. Might give it another try this weekend.
-
Landed two nice pike Saturday at lunch time, one 30" and the other almost 3 foot, unfortunately no eyes that day,Sunday had 5 flags in 15 minutes at dusk, only landed one walleye.seemed like they were just not aggressive, last time we had action like that and they all swallowed it.
-
seems like more pike this year. caught and released one 40" day of the walleye challenge. last saturday one 34" and a keeper eye and one small pike thrown back. probabally caught. 10 pike so far this year. not many legal walleyes
-
This post gets pretty quiet when there is ice and some fishing...h2l
-
People and the fish both have lock jaw😂😂
-
How convenient
-
There ain't no fish in this lake...
-
How far of a walk off broadalbin launch is it until you hit decent depth?
-
with the current snow conditions, more that anyone in their right mind would do...
I would bet its probably 1/2 mile walk from parking lot or better. much shorter walk going our of Sport Island or Wallys
-
any reports on the snow conditions on the west side of lake. Is it tuff going with 4 wheelers. Or my hope is that the strong west winds blew most of the snow to the east side of the lake. any report would be helpful. going anyway Saturday no matter what's reported here. thanks
-
Just wondering ice and snow conditions on the Great Sacandaga
-
Anyone hearing anything about ice conditions around and across from Flag Pole Point? Especially at the rock wall?
-

You could give Louie a call at fuel n food. He usually has a good idea of the conditions up that way.

Ty.
-
Was out last night from about 3:30 to 8, measured 16+ inches, caught one eye
-
Any current conditions out of Wallys? Heading out tomorrow for the afternoon run. Current conditions appreciated. Thanks
-
Out at the shanty. 15.5" of ice. Not all the snow has melted yet. Was rock hard yet at noon. Softening up a bit. Will lose rest of snow tomorrow. As long as we don't get too much rain Saturday we look to be in pretty good shape for Fuel N Food contest next weekend. Setting up to be flat, glare ice!!!! Stay safe. Fish On!!!!
-
I hope you are right about being in good shape for the fishing contest. We are hoping to fish it this year. Thanks for the update.
-
Dragged the shanty off the lake today. A lot of rotten ice/slush on the surface, but looks solid underneath. Shoreline looked dicey in spots and and lots of open water by the streams.
-
Where bouts was your shanty? Ours is still out by scout.
-
Where bouts was your shanty? Ours is still out by scout.
Down in Sunset.
-
All the shanties are off the lake at the campsite as of today...h2l
-
Ours came off south end today as well. Upcoming rain is gonna ruin shoreline.
-
Already seeing some running water up here in the river. I am sure the run-off will break up the ice in the river this weekend...h2l
-
Lou says it is still safe and the tourney is still on.
-
   :thumbsup:hopefully we don't too much rain to kill the edges. No snow left in Lake Placid today 😢
-
How's the ice holding up out of Lanzi's? Would like to try and fish it tomorrow one last time for my final fishing trip of the year.
-
After all this rain this afternoon I am sure the edges are shot. Lake has come up over a foot in the last day and it is sure to come up more overnight. Lots of water coming into the lake today....h2l
-
Edges still holding at 5pm when I did a drive by.
-
Ice has broke up down below Northville bridge almost to Sport Island. Did a number on some of the docks that were on shore. There are a couple ice jams up in the river. When they go it will make a mess out in the lake on this end...h2l
-
Louie is supposed to be going out checking the lake today to make a call on the contest. We will see if it's still on. The lake is up 4' since Thursday and still climbing. Anyplace there is flow coming in is busted wide open for long stretches. It will be a shame if both contests are cancelled 2 years in a row.
-
Anybody know how the shorelines held up on the southern end of the lake off of Wallys?
-
just went and picked up shanty out of the parking lot at the hudson river / black reg. bunker hill rd. there are two shanty's in the water there. they didn't pull them far enough up the beach. lake came way up. one is in about 4 ft. of water the water is about a foot from going in the window.
