advice on a new auger needed
« on: Oct 03, 2011, 03:28 PM »
I have been looking into getting a gas auger. I have concerns about the  composite handles on the strikemaster models and how they will hold up in the cold. Any good advice?

On the community page down towards the bottom, you will see the equipment threads. Anything and everything on or about augers is right in there ! Good luck !

P.S. I never liked plastic anything on ice augers, too easy for em to take a digger and break ! Just my .02 !

We launched one off a sled and drug it behind the four wheeler doing 35mph last year at the Perch Assault and the handle didn't break....the gas tank and carb were a different story however.  That was a buddy's auger so we put a new carb and tank on it and it fired right up.  I went and bought one also at the end of the season.  Metal would be nice, but the new stuff is pretty durable and light.  Strikemaster was pretty good to deal with on the phone also.  Just my $.02.

I own a lazer mag going into season 3 and have had no trouble with the handle. I did pull out the recoil last year but I called strikemaster and had a new one delivered to my doorstep 3 days later no questions asked. They did however ask me to return the broken one so they could fix it and send it back to me so I could have a backup just in case. I can easily say I drill 10-50 holes an outing and I'm not the nicest person on tools. They're rock solid in my eyes and I can cut a hole faster than anyone out there. just my $0.02

Only one auger comes to mind that has a roll cage built around the power head.

Just bought a Strikemaster LazerPro at the end of last year..........Bought it from a guy that was leaving the state and getting rid of all his stuff......it's about a year old, can't wait to use it........BUT.....I let it set all summer with fuel in it and now I'm having trouble with it running at wide open.  It starts great, idles great and runs at top speed if I "pump" the throttle, but if I hold the throttle wide open it stalls out........Did I gum it up by leaving fuel in it??  The fuel has stabil in it so I didn't think I'd have a problem.  Any hints from you guys that have owned them for years??

I'd dump that old gas and get new plus a new spark plug. I'm no expert but that seems like a good start. Good Luck

Startron fuel additive is cheap insurance against The build up of Ethanol Snot and it will help to protect the gaskets and diaphragms in the carb from being Compromised and broken down by the alcohol in the Ethanol !

Could there be a governor on it that will not let it run at full power unless it is under a load? ???

Not on any auger I've seen ! It sounds like the fuel inlet jet is sticking or plugged !

Wholesale in Msla has the new Frabill.  All the metal looks pretty tough.  The pull handle looks a little wimpy compared to everything else though.

Hey, what I'd do is... now read this slowly... SELL THAT STRIKEMASTER AND BUY A JIFFY ;D
Just messin' with ya!  Put a carb kit in it.  It's actually fairly easy if you have really small and dainty fingers ;)  I think I have one in the garage you can have if you want it.  Send me a PM and I'll send it your way as I don't have a strikemaster anymore.  Let me know and it's yours.  Also, stabil or seafoam is cheap insurance for the offseason.  Good fishin' - OH

aviation fuel is the absolute highest quality fuel you can use in any motor. the best bar none for all small engines. costs a little more upfront than premium but no fuel related problems after that, and that can be priceless!

And no alcohol!
Just don't use it in anything that has a catalytic converter as there is still a small amount of lead in it.
