slammers
« on: Jan 12, 2011, 05:46 PM »
anybody use slammers or hookseting tipups? any pros or cons?? im building a few slammers, I have them done, but tweeking on them a bit they have flags and flag alarms. they function really well. the one has about a 12 in. hook set and the other is about 14 in. hookset. is this enough or to much you think? the hookset is made by the release of a bent rod. excited to test them out.

Post some pics, I'd like to see them.  That seems like a long hook set, but I've never seen these things in action.  How sensitive is the hook set?  Will it go off if a fish just bumps the bait?

They work fantastic and I can adjust the tension of the release so it will even set with a 12 inch sucker minnow for Big Pike.
It depends on how deep the water is for a good hook set. Shallower is the best but you can also set it hair trigger for releasing if
you are fishing deep for Lakers or Whitefish.

I use them more then I use a Flag Tip Up but I like the idea of having a flag but I usually hear the drag of the reel screaming....just
love that sound. LOL.

well thanks. have lots of time on my hands (laid off hunting guide and carpenter) so thought it would be a really good dead stick setup.

Guys, those things are cool as hell! Pretty simple in design, but I'm sure they give a great hook set. Those would come in handy for those soft biting trout on Canyon Ferry.

mine are still un used yet (other than by me)hopefully heading up north this weekend to test em out on some ling and some kamloops. they are simple but take alot of tweeking to get a light triger for finiky trout. i have several triggers in my box i have made up for heavier baits. im not so sure they will work so well ffor pike but im going to try one this weekend with a quick set and see what happens.

(P.S if your going to build one for tweeking on them with weights of your luers will be lighter in water. also take the hooks off i proved that it will set a hook in a human finger.)

Very simple and cheap to make.....especially if you have scrap wood laying around. Most expensive part of mine is the rod holder....9 bucks.
Don't know if you have done this before, if you hold your ctrl key down when your cursor is on the picture and scroll up with your mouse wheel you will be able to see  how the releases work better as the picture enlarges.

I threw one together this week using cjflorence' as a guide, caught some perch on it too. Kinda cool, maybe better suited for trout or crappie than perch in 50 FOW- but still pretty cool.

Here is a picture my version of a Home Made Slammer using a paper clip for the release in the rod tip eye.

Bob

thanks for the photo, looks like it's not too difficult to produce,

laters
the Cator.

They are very easy to make...Put your Bolt through the Horizontal Piece with the Paper Clip Release put a Metal or Nylon Washer as a spacer then the Bolt obviously goes through the upright which is hinged to the base so it falls down when a fish hits.....Put a Wing Nut or Nut on the end of the Bolt.
When you are setting it up for fishing make sure there is very little tension and the Horizontal Piece moves freely Up And Down.

If you make the bigger version for Pike with a longer rod...Be carefull when you are setting it up because the Paper Clip acts like a Hair Trigger and if your grip on the rod slips it can smack you in the Face.
If you are using Bigger Minnows or Suckers for Pike You can adjust the tension by bending the Paper clip and by how far you have the end of it in the Rod Eye.

Hope This Helps.

This is one of the more useful tips I've seen in a while. Do you have to use the curlie cue rod holder for your snap set or can you use anything else. I have some PVC holders I made a while back and could modify them to hold my rods (save the 9 bucks).
When all else fails, use the worm!

Made one today out of scraps I had around the garage.  Little different than the ones shown here, but took ideas from all over IceShanty.  Used a paperclip for the trigger at first then changed it out with a piece of copper 14/2 wire.  Both worked about the same so no big deal there.  I used 1 1/4 inch pvc pipe cut at a 45 degree angle for the rod holder and bolted it to the board.  Need to make a couple more before the weekend so we can try em out.  Thanks for all the good ideas, pictures and advice I gained from here..........see ya on the ice!!!
