Title: Perch
Post by: jclements7869 on Dec 17, 2016, 02:37 PM
I'm looking for places closer to me to get some perch on the ice. I know of Holter, but seeing if anyone knows of anything closer to Belt. Thank you guys for the help.

I'm not sure where belt is exactly but I was wondering the same thing so what I did is I looked for Lakes in my county and the surrounding counties and then if you go to the very bottom to the original post it will tell you what type of fish are in it.  hope that helps

Tiber has some jumbo perch in it, along with monster pike and walleye.

Beaver Creek Reservoir (10 miles south of Havre) has good perch fishing-not many jumbos.  There are pike, walleye, small mouth bass, and rainbow trout also.  The walleye are hard to catch ice fishing.

I'm from GFalls originally and fished growing up in your area tons, Family land around Raynesford and Geyser I hunt a lot! If you are not going to Holter there are some lakes just out of Lewistown with decent perch. Not sure of the lake name but they have a perch derby there most years! Do a little research on this site and you should figure it out. Good luck FH!

Arod lakes near conrad have em, they can be tough to find but there are some big ones there, decent pike fishing also.  Pishkun up on the front has them also, same deal they can be tough to find but good size (deep water bite, 35-45 ft).  Francis and Tiber are probably your best bets.

I think the lake you're referring to is East Fork Reservoir. I've never fished it, but plan to this year. They're having the perch derby on January 21st. Looks like it's about 10 miles south of Lewistown.

Oh thanks. I didn't even think about the possibility of heading that way. I have fished Tiber in the past. Not much luck there for perch, but had a blast with the trout and pike. Perch poacher I am probably going to be spending some time up in Havre so I will have to check out Beaver Creek Reservoir.

Try off the west side of the dam out 30-40 yards in 40-45 FOW.  You can use live minnows there and once in a while you catch a small walleye.  Helps to have a flasher.

Beaver Creek reservoir is a good perch fishery. I have done well on that body of water with bigger than average sized perch each time I have fished it over the last several years.

A flasher helps a ton, but is not totally necessary. We were there late last January. I had best success with pink maggots or perch eyes in about 40 feet of water. It seems like those fish up there are in shallower water in the morning and then move out as the day goes on until late afternoon. I use buckshot mainly up there.

Hardwater thanks for the tips. I don't have any electronics but I will try to find some deeper water up there for sure.

Anyone know if there is a good place for perch down in the Bitterroot?
Title: Re: Perch
Post by: Houdy66 on Dec 29, 2016, 01:06 PM
Only place I know of where you'll find perch in the Bitterroot Valley is the little public pond in Lolo. I've only open water fished it, but it has perch, bass, sunfish, and a few pike. Nothing gets very big in there, from what I've been told.

I was down at Holter last weekend, caught a ton of perch out there, and a few trout. Im heading back that way tomorrow morning to hit it again. Its worth the drive from Belt. Im in Great Falls, so its a little longer for you.

Tizzle, I made the drive this morning. Was worth it, we came back with a few meals each. Wanted to hit departure point but it was packed. We ended up staying near log gulch.

There were definitely hundreds of people near departure point. We stayed to the right of log gulch and only had a few people around us.

Was up at Holter Friday with one of my sons. We fished just east of  log gulch. Caught 12 perch, son put tip up out further, caught nice Ling. Small town sprang up from departure point to black sand beach.
