Caught my first

I've enjoyed fishing for them in the summer, but never managed to get out for them in the winter before...I got out with a friend yesterday and caught my first one through the ice...about 12" on a jigging spoon tipped with a Gulp maggot.  I got a second one later about 13" or so on a small jig with twin tail grub body.

Here's my first.



We didn't have all that successful a day for the target species, but did manage to catch a few, with quite a number of perch and a few pike thrown in.

Yes...my partner wanted to keep a few to eat...in the end, he gave them to me with suggestions for cleaning as I've never eaten crappie before...we had them for lunch today.



The flavour was fine, but I did find them less firm than some of the other species we typically eat (walleye, perch), so that threw me off a bit, but tasty enough.

Nice first crappie :) a 12" er is a nice one anywhere (in my book)

Anything in the 9"-13" is a keeper if I'm keeping.  ;) And those are some fine 1st crappies to catch thru the ice, wtg.  :thumbsup: Try shaking a sprinkle of cajun spice on that.  ;) MMMM good.   ;)2

Well, I've enjoyed them since I was introduced to them on the soft water...I've previously been out (once last winter I think with the same friend as a guide...flasher battery died on me), but hadn't caught before.

There's much worse things to be hooked on.

Fishing is always fun, if you have the right attitude...many days, I don't have the right attitude  ::)  That was a fun day overall though with nice weather, a good friend, and a number of fish of 3 species caught.

I spend alot of time fishin for bows but ill tell you its hard to beat a day of crappie fishing when the action is fast.
