Hey Everyone!

The University of Maine Fishing Club will be putting on an ice derby on Pushaw Lake March 3rd. And we're interested in hearing some of your feedback since this is the first derby we'll be putting on.

Pushaw Lake, March 3rd 2018
Weigh in starts at 7 AM at Gould's Landing, Orono. All fish in by 3:45 and winning prizes and raffle will begin at 4 PM sharp!

Adult Division $15 entry fee, Youth $5. Cut off is 16 years old between the divisions.

We're currently working on getting our online registration set up through our website, it will be up very soon! And we'll have in person sign up the day before the derby, possibly at Old Town Trading Post. There will of course be day-of sign ups beginning at 5 AM at Gould's Landing, Orono.

We'll have an adult and youth division for the four following categories...
Heaviest White Perch (Adult 15% payout, Youth Physical Prize)
Heaviest Pickerel (Adult 15% payout, Youth Physical Prize)
Heaviest total weight caught of Largemouth Bass (Adult 15% payout, Youth Physical Prize)
Heaviest total weight caught of Northern Pike (Adult 15% payout, Youth Physical Prize)

We're working with Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to help push forth conservation efforts in the Pushaw Basin to work on managing invasive species like Pike and Largemouth Bass, as well as to help inform everyone about the dangers these fish pose to Maine's waterways. We're currently in the process of acquiring prizes for the Youth Division, and we have some awesome stuff in the works! Once I get more details on prizes and sign ups I'll update the post.

Bring your Family and Friends for a day of fun and fishing on a local Bangor lake!

If you have any questions or advice for us, let us know! This is our first derby and we'd like to avoid any common pitfalls that new derby's suffer from. We figured that asking experienced anglers for advice and their thoughts would be extremely beneficial in making this day as fun as possible. Our permit has been approved by IF&W and we're extremely excited to have the opportunity to get this started the right way.

I'll keep the post updated as we go along through the process, answer any questions, and readily accept any advice anyone has to offer!

We've gotten online registration up on our website, http://www.umainefishingclub.com/store/c1/Featured_Products.html and we've established that there will be day before sign ups at Old Town Trading Post! They've also been so kind as to give us 5 blaze orange camo Heritage Laker traps for Youth Prizes! Let us know if you have any feedback for us to help us improve this event, we really want to make it something special and we'd love to avoid common mistakes that you might see at other new derbies.

Have flyers and tickets available at the stores on the Glenburn side of the lake.  Many of your fisherman for that derby will be coming from Glenburn.

Erik - sounds like a great event and I wish you much luck for a safe and fun first derby.  As with any first-time event, I'm sure there will be minor bumps in the road but I can tell from your post it will still be successful and your sophomore run will be even better, given your openness to feedback.

Will check in with the schedule maker to see if it's possible to visit my parents around that time and perhaps I'll see you out there.  Either way, good luck!

Mike
