What are you waiting for?
« on: Oct 24, 2011, 06:45 PM »
Anybody else out yet?  No shortage of action on the 2nd weekend out of this season.  Found plenty of lakes with 3"-5" of good ice.  Biggest fish was a 26" laker with a nasty tumor on it's lip.  Didn't seem to phase it's appetite though.

I couldn't wait that long, made it out the weekend before too.  Was definately a little more prepared than last year though (brought more beer).

First fish of the year.

Way to go BB!  I "used" to be the first on the ice several years back... BUT it's getting tougher to cut away during the early season.  I'm glad you got out and caught some decent fish.  Lake looks familiar too!  I was thinking of a bunny/fishing trip sometime this week there.  How thick is that ice?

There was about 4"- 5" on most of the lake.  Where it was deeper, maybe 2" - 2 1/2".  Didn't have to get out too far to find fish.  Sight fishing in about 2' - 3' was as productive as anything, but it was hard to keep the dinks off.  There were some other guys out with dogs weekend before last looking for bunnies & birds.  Didn't hear any shooting, so I don't know how they did.  There were some critter tracks around there though.

I will be out as soon as the Kenai Peninsula gets ice.
I have only been lucky enough to fish in October one time.

Near Delta Junction...the are lakes in the US Army Donnelly Training area (donnelly dome in the one picture) I was out there this last weekend looking for sharp tail grouse. Did not see anyone fishing on the lakes this last Saturday?

Hey BHB, you see any sharp tails out that way?

I'm a jealous as everybody else in the steamey southland, looks like a great time! Where's the green with envy icon? Noticed the "ice thickness gauge" to your left in the second picture (to the right in the picture), does using  those help bring on the early ice? It looked special, where can I get one? ;D LOL

I think your close KP!  Went down there this weekend with the boys and caught a dozen rainbows and took a couple snowshoes with the .22's.  GREAT weekend indeed!  5" of ice and the fish were hungry. ;D

Do you guy's up there in Alaska have any idea how incredibly lucky you are? First of all you have Sarah(pant, slobber, drool!) Palin! As if that weren't enough, you also get in on awesome ice fishing well before the rest of us. Thing's are so tough down here in the Lower 48 that some Sunday's we have to watch the Green Bay Packers! :woot:   :laugh:DIRTBALL2 ;)

Come on' Keith!  You know after next year you'll have to "root" for the Packers again!!!  It's a shame your Vikings will relocate to LA and our rivalry will be no longer.  >:(  I don't understand HOW the legislation and the owner cant find the answers?  Anyways, You can always go back to rooting for those World Champs again like you did back in the 50's!  ;D ;D

Oh and Palin, hot or not!  She's a quitter to me "you betcha..."  She's Alaska's (unfortunately) version of the Kim Kardashian, and I'm a Republican.  >:(
