« on: Feb 25, 2008, 12:58 PM »
I got me a tip up.  What size line do ya'all suggest I use on it?  I want to catch whatever I can;  hopefully some walleye, pike or bass.  :)

Polaris Braided Ice Fishing Line(white).......then a swivel....followed by 3-4 feet of Spider Wire leader....then your hook.

For the main line I use Mason Ice-Line in 20lb. test and a 2' - 3' 14lb. - 17lb. flourocarbon leader off a barrel swivel to the Mason.  I have my walleye tip-up set-up the same way exept an 8lb. flourocarbon leader.  The dacron line is easy to handle in the snow and cold when pulling the fish in.

a thicker mainline is better because its easier to handle and wont cut your fingers. i use 50 or 65 pound test. there are probably only 20 fish in the province over that weight but its easier to handle so i can land more fish. 20 pound powerpro or fireline is a bad choice because if the fish decides to run you get cut fingers.

the line i use for a main line is more like thin decoy line. My leader is a 3 foot steel leader.

New to ice fishing last winter, and am about to purchase my first tip ups.  How much line do you use on them?  I see most spools are only 50 yards, like the Masons.  Is that enough?  I would think at least 100 yards is needed plus the leader?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

check pro bass - get large spool of 30-50lb dacron  line length depends on what and where you are fishing. shallow ponds with perch and pickerel 50 yards is enough, big lakes 100-200yards is a min.be sure you fill your spools 1/16 to 1/8 of the top just as you would a spinning reel
GOOD LUCK - GOOD FISHING
