Wind tip up work only when the temperature is going to stay above 32 f (usually in March) I tie a small lightweight silver spoon about a foot and a half above the bait and set the metal for a medium to heavy jigging action. I usually will get more flags on the wind tip up then my other ones. I usually set up 1 wind tip up on warm days and the other 4 are regular tip ups. If fishing with other people we usually do 1 wind tip up per person. Do not use them if the holes are freezing over becuse they are a pain to keep open and the line will build up a big ice ball on it.
Plus it is fun to watch the tip up when the fishing action is slow.
