Off topic, Bison hunt
« on: Dec 25, 2018, 06:48 PM »
My Brother was lucky enough to draw a Gardiner Bison tag this year.  We were hoping to find one before the big migration and the crazies started.  We are headed down this next weekend just to check things out.  Has anyone seen a straggler or two come outside the park yet?

OMG, might as well shoot a cow cause bison won't even move if you get near them

Oh they move alright. Straight down to the ground with a head shot and if if you plan it right they roll downhill and stop ten feet from the truck!🤙

What a lucky guy.  Been putting in every year but sadly there are so few tags they give out.  See if he will post a pic of his on here when he gets it.  I know its a little off topic but id love to see some good luck.

I heard of one getting shot out by Cooke City, but haven't heard from anyone in Gardiner yet.  Often the very first ones out of the park hang out by Eagle Creek campground - can be a good way to get away from the insanity at Beatty.

all the politics aside..to me..this is like a raffle for the local fireman for a side a beef...cept instead of the local group..proceeds go to dnr….and the meat is not packaged clean....don't get me wrong...I would love to have that opportunity for a skull and robe and 1000 lbs of meat..but ..lets be real real..it aint a hunt....its a funraiser…..

That's what we were hoping to do is go find a straggler or two, but all we get from fish and game is a blanket statement that there have been no bison seen outside the park or near the boundary inside the park, and that recording is from the 13th of December.  He called the region 3 headquarters and the lady just repeated to him what the hotline said.  I lived in Bozeman for seven years but moved 8 years ago and remember seeing a few outside the park above Gardiner even during the general hunting season.  I was just wondering if they still get a few like that, or if they only come out in bunches now.

Expect lots of competition  from other "groups". A hunter I know hired a guide to help him, mainly to help with getting it out from the area where he got his bull. Check with the Gardiner USFS, they might know something.

I harvested this awesome animal two years ago on the WY side. The hide is one of the coolest trophy's I have also did a euro mount myself. For sure one of the best eating animals there is. Great memories and hope I can draw a tag again in my lifetime.

Drove from Gardiner to the Lamar today.Only saw one bull by the hotpots. Most of the buffao are still in the Lamar area, there were a few hundred above Undine falls.More grass and less snow than I have seen in the last 45 years.

MatCat,
I had that tag last year and killed a bull up Eagle Creek.  I was down a couple weeks ago and didn't see anything up there. That being said last year I found my bull up there on November 15th.  He was the only buffalo outside the park to my knowledge at the time.  So I would say that just because the mass migration may not have started doesn't mean there are no bison outside the park.
It was an awesome hunt. Hit me up if you have any other questions. We had a ton of "lessons learned" from that hunt.

Good Luck!

Matt
