I need a new knot
« on: Dec 20, 2011, 09:54 PM »
For years I have been using the Palomar knot on everything. However, I have noticed that I am struggling with this knot on jigs with trebles and/or drop hooks. I don't know if I am just getting old and the digits don't work like they used too or what, but I think I need to look at other methods of tying on.
I have looked at a few sites that have knot tying diagrams and such, so now I want to know what others are using and maybe give a couple of new ones a try this season. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I usually fish for pannies on the ice.

Are you having a hard time getting the doubled line through the eye? Put the single tag end through the eye then, pull a bunch of line throw and go back through the eye again.  And as to snugging down the knot, hook the hook onto something (my pliers have a "loop" just for that use) and give it a good pull! If all you are catching is pan fish you might get away with a double surgeon's loop, but it is only about 70% breaking strength... To low for me.

The annoyance with the palomar knot is pulling that loop all around the entire lure, especially when the lure has treble hooks.

with that double surgeon's loop, I'm assuming your lure eyelet is laced in that loop - but wouldn't it be harder to snake your jig/hook/treble through that setup (twist through overhand knot) than just throwing it through the relatively large and les twisty loop on a palomar?

I too am looking for a new "go to" knot as the palomar is a bit of pain with tiny jig eyelets....tried the double back trick...unless it's braid, the line is too thick sometimes.  I've never tied a uni, but I use the uni-uni connector a lot, maybe I'll try the uni  ???

I use the double surgeons for single hook jigs when panfishing...palomar when I'm fishing bigger fish.
Rapala knot for jiggin raps seems to work best for me.
takes a little practice to keep the end loop small, but once you get used to it it's not bad.
it is a tough to tie when fishing outside the shanty, but aren't they all?
If you ever get hit with a bucket of fish, be sure to close your eyes. ;)

This.
I'll give the uni a try and see how I do with it. I plan to stay with the Palomar when I am on the prowl for big cats in the summer months. Thanks guys!!

It's funny, for open water fishing I always use an improved cinch knot to tie on the lure and a uni to uni knot to join the leader to main line.  However, ice fishing is a different story.  I always use palomar's for every connection.  If the lure with treble hooks is giving you grief, just pull an extra long loop through the eye.  More material to work with, and a bigger loop for error.

Look up the "Worlds Fair Knot`. Very simple to tie and offers a bit more strength on the hook with its double wrap. Just be sure to wet the line when snugging up - just like you should do with any line.

Knots by grog has animated knot tying videos to look at, I have used the uni knot on everything from 2lb panfish line to 150 lb tuna leaders and the Uni knot has never let go on me once in over 20 years and once learned, it can be one of the fastest tying knot in your arsenal !

I lose just as much tackle with any kind of knot.  I use 6 turn clinch on flies and ice lures.

I'm a superline guy. The berkley braid knot is strong, durable, and with pratctice can easily be tied in the dark with cold fingers. I was using palomar before i discovered this knot, much nicer

4 pounds and up i use the rapala loop knot. when you go thru the overhand knot the second time make sure to go thru the middle of the two legs. if the lure has a split ring on it, you can slip it on and off the ring without retying.

if i want more action on a jig i use a rapala knot. if i want less i use the trilene knot. i like to think of it as and improved improved clinch http://www.animatedknots.com/trilene/index.php?Categ=fishing&LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com
