Jigging Rapala?
« on: Nov 11, 2010, 12:46 PM »
This will be my first year using jigging rapalas for ice fishing. I was just wondering what you all tip your jigging rapalas with. Do you use worms, plastics, Shiner head or tail. Just wondering what all of you use, so i know whats good to tip my jigging rapalas with. thanks in advance.

I just use one red jensen egg on the bottom hook and thats it. Sometimes I don't even do that. Raps are for sure my go to lure all winter for perch

They don't make them any more. I bought 3 jars of the red before they were gone. But a company called atlas mikes now makes them and they are exactly the same. Get the red ones, in the anise oil.

I usually do not tip them with anything, but work it hard to get the swimming action going.  I do a lift with the rod tip of about 2-3 ft let it swim back down and then pound the rod tip for 20-30 sec before repeating.  I also match the color of the Rapala to the baitfish we have in the lake (golden shiners, perch, or Niagara minnows).  It has been working well for the bass, walleye and crappie in our lake.  Some of my friends tip theirs and they do well also.  Some days I get more; some days they get more.
Good luck.

You will be very happy with your purchase.  I usually fish for perch and these work really well.  Just present the lure in smooth up and down 7 inch movements.  Each time you come down, pause for about 7 seconds.  And repeat.  I have used the jigging rap #3 in fire tiger, perch chrome, and char yellow.  All have been effective (GFT my favorite).  Baiting the hook is not necessary.  I used the Jensen Egg, and PowerBait Maggots, and didn't notice a difference.  You would think it would since all the fish I caught on the treble.
Add a day to your life, go fishing.

Yep made by Atlas now, except I still get and see Jensen branded eggs (bought about 20 bottles last year at Gander Mtn).

Here is the link to Atlas.

I have rapala's, and have never caught anything on them.  The Hali is the jig I use almost exclusively now...head and shoulders above everything else I have.  I use the perch striped hali's..since perch are the bait fish in the lake I fish.

When I am in N.Y. I use Buckeye heads. In Maine I use Smelt heads. In Pa rosies or fat heads. Spikes or mousies work too.

I love this style bait

icejunky, I truly believe you do, absolutely and completely, have everything. In great variety also.

Question: Anyone use a 2" fluoro dropper with single red wide-gap after removing the center treble?

For lake trout I don't tip them at all, and you don't usually need to for twighlight walleyes either. During the day though I tip a tiny sliver of nightcrawler on them to keep from ruining the action. If you use them for perch or crappie they always need to be tipped.

Yes, I have tried this set up, and it works quite well.
I also use Hali glow bead chains attached where the bottom treble used to be.

I really like this setup for perch and trout.

Hope this helps,

Wiener
