What is everyone's opinion on the best lakes or water systems in North America/Canada to have a chance at giant walleye (28+)? Right now Winny is on top of my list, I was just looking for some other ideas/opinions. Thanks!
-
Not in specific order, staying in the US.......
Erie
Little Bay Du Noc
Sturgeon Bay
Leech Lake
Vermillion
Winnebago
-
Winnebago, I like Asylum Bay (north or south) for perch, and just east of the shove for walleyes.
-
Erie was on my list too...may need to take a closer look a Winnebago. Thanks for the replies dudes

You'll catch a bunch of fish in Winnebago, but huge ones are somewhat of a rarity. It's a numbers deal with no size limit.
-
more times then not winnebago is a mean girl and u dont get huge numbers of walleye in the winter!
-
Ft. Peck, MT, Lake Tobin, SK, Green Bay, WI, Seminoe, WY
-
Seminoe?
-
Lots of giant walleyes that no one fishes for! I've personally caught 8 over 11lbs from there and I only make it down once or twice a year.
-
Lake Winnipeg in march. Just look on the cover of this years In fisherman ice guide.....

Winny is on the top of my list brother!
I've got Ft. Peck high on my hit list now - giants in there that not many people fish. Of all the times i've been up to the promise land, I have only brought my fly rod and not ice fishing gear. That's gonna change sooN!

Tobin lake, sk . Last mountain lake, sk. Lake Winnipeg, mb. These three produce walleye often in the 10+ range. I've had days on tobin where fish under 26" were rare and the girth fish have out of that lake make fish from other lakes look Ill . The red river by Selkirk mb is also extremely good.
-
Lake erie for sure. Don't know anywhere else that you have a real opportunity to catch a limit of 8-15lb walleye every day you go out
-
Bay of Quinte is known for big walleye as well.
-
The Western part of Lake Erie is pretty tough to beat.
-
In the east:
Bay of Quinte
Western/Central Lake Erie
Central/West:
Lost Mountain Lake
Tobin Lake
Red River
West:
Ft Peck

Can't imagine any lake being as good as Lake Winnipeg, but thats the only one I fish, and so far this year its producing hawgs, every time, several fish in the 28-30" size, or translated 8-12lbs, if it wasn't such a PITA to post pics on this site I would post a few from this season

I would love to see some pics of thos giants! Winnipeg is definitely on the top of my list - I wish I had enough funds and vacation to swing the trip this March. Do you have any recommendations on places to stay? Do you feel like a guide is needed/required or would a guy be able to get on fish without one?

The casino is booked solid a year in advance for feb/march. A new hotel has opened on the edge of Selkirk that allows you to go either east or west side. It can be done without a guide. Pretty featureless basin, just have to move to the fish. Guides are tough to get those two months, but message me if you want to go that route.. There are several I can pass on to you.

Tobin sounds to me as a top spot. I would like for someone to share some advice and tips about Tobin.

st lawrence river is in its golden age right now for walleyes. So many 8-12 pound fish. I expect to get one atleast 7 or 8 everytime I go. 10 pounds use to be the benchmark, thast nothing now. 12-13 is the benchmark now with guys getting 14's and 15's now and then lol.

lol about the 630 mark ( I have tattoo's on my fingers) ouch but very funny.

Lake erie is by far the best walleye fishery in the world. Where else can you go and catch 50 fish in a day and average 8lb fish
-
My top 2 places are Erie and Little Bay de Noc. Both places you can slam big walleye year round and get numbers as well. After that Oahe, LOTW, Rainey, Winnebago are hard to beat. There really are a lot of great waters though. You can't really go wrong with any of them. I am biased toward the Great Lakes. When you think of walleye fishing, Erie and Michigan set the bar. Have fished both this winter and my smallest fish so far has been 23 inches with the biggest being 13.93 pounds.

This is a "questionable" question by someone here with over a 1000 posts.
Someone with the number of posts you have on a site like this I would typically assume to have been involved with fishing and the outdoors for quite some time.
I would also assume you have already probably seen plenty of discussions regarding Lake Erie and the incredible fishery it offers these days.
Therefore, I will assume you are simply trolling for something silly with the 2 questions that you posted.
Still, I will try to answer your questions.
Yes.
And no.

If you are really serious with your question please do a little online research on the past and present pollution levels of the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Erie.
Erie, being the shallowest, was the worst polluted back in the 60's, but it was also the quickest to turn around back in the 70's and 80's after measures were taken to curb the pollution being dumped into it.
Google "phosphates" and their effects on streams and lakes.
And the banning of them back in the 70's.
Look for the industrial waste contributors on the Great Lakes and the DEC's efforts to go after the companies responsible, etc.
Good luck.
