Yes, it is early, however winter started in early November.

People been fishing South Bay. 4-6” magog has been frozen over for some time but I haven’t heard about people going out yet.

Went out yesterday. 2" of black ice with 2" of garbage on top of that.
Not safe ice yet.

Fished strawberry acres on Tuesday 5-6 inches. Very poor bite unless your looking for smelt they were everywhere. I won’t be going up again I usually typically make one trip a year up there and it usually ends the same way complete waste of time. Ended up catching 3 dink perch and 3 smelt not a very productive day I wouldn’t waste my time with Magog there are much better places for perch

Fished strawberry acres last and I had a blast. Big perch, lots of them, big pikes and lots of smelts.

Hey Hardwater, to get to Magog it going to take you a long drive, the lake is on the Canadian border.
Look on google maps for Newport VT. The area referred to as strawberry acres is this VT fish and wildlife location:

I've been there a few times and the fishing can be fun but weather can make it brutal. I have family that owns a house in Newport and they now winter in AZ, with their house winterized, i don't want to make the 4.5 hour drive to rent a hotel.

Whipple point you access strawberry acres.
Eagle point you can access the islands.

So there are some huge differences with magog. South Bay has been fishing for weeks. The main lake ice can vary. I have a place up there but haven't set eyes on the lake for a couple of weeks since the warm up and rain. If you see wheelers, shacks, etc on South Bay that does't mean all is good for Eagle Pt.
Thanks for the Strawberry Acres report....not getting the Northerns info a legit as they usually stay in S Bay.

Northern fishery north of town - years ago yes Northern fishery was in South Bay but
this summer they were everywhere. Our gang has caught them through the ice
trout an perch fishing north of Newport. We are also noticing the decline in small mouth
fishery.

When you have Canadians keeping everything they can numbers will go down

I fished Northerns for years mainly off the CT river setbacks and around the Rutland area lakes. Just not my favorite fish to target for a variety of reasons. I really wish they would decline in Magog allowing for the trout, salmon, and walleye populations to thrive. That said, I'm not 100% of the extent of the impact they have on the other species in the Lake.
Bummed to hear this about them being all over the lake now.
I know there are many folks that can testify to what the trout fishery was like 20 years ago and earlier. The trout and salmon runs in the Willoughby/Barton, Black ... very impressive in the day.
If folks that target them are keeping some and opening them up... I'd be curious to learn what they are eating mostly.

Don't know that I've ever caught a Magog trout that had ANYTHING in it's belly except smelt.

Yes they are /\. There taking over the lake. Fished with the boat this spring and the lake was full of them. Today we went out on the main lake. Got some nice perch and a hell of a laker.

Magog is a beautiful place.
With all lakes in VT, it’s been hit or miss this year.
Sounds like it’s been a decent season so far. I’m itching to find some time to make the drive and take in the scenery.

Hey how has the bite been up there lately? My wife are I are planning on heading up there next weekend for a Sat/Sun adventure. Is it good at the islands or main bay?

Lots of snow, hard getting around. Been a good year for lakers and perch.

Well, as my nickname implies I like catching pike. I have never fished Magog but have driven by a bunch of times when stream fishing in the spring/summer. I have always wanted to give it a try. What size pike are being caught in south bay and how many would you catch on a typical day with two guys and 16 tip ups. I typically fish the north end of Champlain. The action there is primarily good but i'm still curious about Magog.
Beautiful lake. Some perch and smelt for the kitchen would be a nice bonus as well.

sold camp in Holland haven't been up in 3 years don't know what happening up there in God's country. Central nh is slow looking for a change
