Short rods AND long rods??
« on: Jun 06, 2018, 08:24 AM »
I custom build my own rods, have about a dozen of them, various 'strengths' from noodles to med walleye rods.  But they are all around 30"+.  Ive always fished outside primarily, or in my 2 man Yukon when there is enough ice.  (lots of mods s I need to use my snowmobile to pull it).  But on those in climate days, sitting outside can get a bit chilly, etc.....This past year, I took all the heckling I could from my buddy who was 'nice and comfortable in his small, lightweight, one man.  So I sat in to try it out, and it is definitely something im going to invest in this year.  However, I noticed that I would be better served by short rods.  Do other guys have shorter rods for inside their one man shacks and longer ones for outside?  Or do I just have an issue, wanting to build more rods.....Please help..... ;D

I build my own rods too.
Outside I use 42 inch sticks and inside I use 30" and under.
28" is my preferred length for using in my 2 man flip over.

Perfect for one man.  Perfect for your temperate climate(uninsulated), and perfect for a guy who prefers longer rods.  The price isn't too bad either. ;)

I use the same 28" rods in my hut and outside.  Out side I do not stand up and fish, I sit on a bucket so the 28" rods work just fine.

Perchnut, the listing is kinda screwed up.  It’s for an Eskimo Evo I.  52 pounds.  There are lighter one man shacks, but the Evo I is nice for the roominess.  For $175 bucks, I’m having a hard time passing on it.  lol.

If I find myself in the situation where I need a short rod, I would still make a 24" rod set-up work for me.  I simply just don't position myself that on top of my ice hole.

I use both. Anything up to 32 in. inside a fishhouse, longer rods for fishing outside.

I use 3 different rods for pan fish : 24" for close quarters (shanty, etc.) 36" for run-n-gun (easy for picking up when moving hole 2 hole) and a 48" (for slow moving/light biting fish)...all of the light/med. light variety. I like them a "little" stiffer for quicker hook sets. However, I do use thin wire leader material for my (home made) strike indicators. This set-up has worked real well for me over the years. Hope this helps.

In the shack i use short rods. But outside hole hopping i like to use Pulsator type poles 48 inches to 52 inches with still fish reels. Easy on the back, keeps you back from the hole.
Flags up! Bobbers down!
