Many different ways, but basically, spool turns (fish taking line) and a flag goes up.

There are several different styles.  Seems like they all work.  Pick the one you like.  No need to get fancy or expensive.   Once the fish is hooked and on, its all hand lining it in from there.

Polar Tipups are great. When I started ice fishing many many years, I used wooden tipups because I could not afford the Polar. Now the price has dropped and there are a lot of knockoffs. I have my Polars for well over 20 years without an issue. My advice is go out a lake and talk to someone, you will see how they work and what you need. Good luck.

I still have the set of 4 Frabill Arctic Fire tip ups that I got in 2005 when I "started" ice fishing. I rarely use tip ups anymore, but they still function just as well as the day I got them. $18 each on amazon.
