Title: What other hobbies do you have?
Post by: lefty2053 on Oct 23, 2018, 02:45 PM
OK so I am getting OLD. I mostly only go fishing and mess around on the PC. Been doing the PC thing since the 80's, and it is really getting boring. Fishing never does. But on those days off of fishing I need more to do. What are some of your hobbies? I need more. Don't we all?

Fun thread!

My wife and I have a saying "everybody needs a hobby."  But she often adds that I don't need any more!  And then there's that threat to buy me a shirt reading "stop me before I volunteer again."

Hunting (birds and big game)
Shooting handguns
Boat fishing
Backpacking
Snowshoeing
Unicycling
R/C Vehicles
Cooking
Smoking (food)
Grilling
Playing in a Holiday band
Home production and storage (my applesauce and plum jam are killer good)
College football (mostly my alma mater)
Dirt biking
RV camping
Disc golf
Riding our tandem mountain bike
Ice Shanty  ;D
Certain CBS series -- Allegedly that's an age-group thing.   ::)

Some of these are on the back burner while I try to get my bum knee working.  That's an age thing, too...

lefty2053, I'm with you, getting OLD... fishing is my primary recreational activity. I still hunt and trap, but just in a very limited way. Most of my hobbies are done the same way, very limited. Except eating, it's the one hobby where I can excel!   ;D

Eating
Fishing; ice, kayak, fly
Dr. Appointments
Hunting; turkey, deer
Trapping
Gardening
NHL. Blackhawks
NASCAR, Chase Elliot
Woodworking
Collecting Outdoor Stuff; lures, traps, reels, licenses, whatever strikes me...
I also play around with making short videos(YouTube)and watching YouTube videos
And yes eating!

I think this is an awesome thread with some great suggestions so far. I'd like to add an insight I had when doing some wood working with my brother this summer. I had spent about 3 hours on a piece of wood that I was chiseling and widdling to create a wall piece of art. In doing so, I mentioned that I had not even noticed how the time went by and that I enjoyed the act of making the piece so much more than I was enjoying the finished product. The moral I took from my own words, It is more about the joy and peace we find in what we are doing than what we tangibly get out of it as a result. I suggest you look for and try many different things until you find something that you enjoy doing. Just like so many of us on IceShanty love fishing, we don't fish just for the picture or wall-mount that we might end up with. I know I fish for fishing and catching a nice one is just a sweet sweet bonus.

I agree with most all of the suggested hobbies listed above. Some of mine that I find joy in include:
Fly tying
archery
hunting
camping
drawing
data analysis
ultimate frisbee
having a campfire
dinner parties
researching areas of interest (lately is is mostly more ice fishing things  ;D )
building things I can use
watching a movie with the wife
yard work
walking the dogs
cooking

I also suggest looking into a hobby that you have never done before. Most of the current research on memory and aging suggests that the only factor that they are able to consistently identify as negatively correlated with Alzheimer's is learning/doing new things as you get older. The theories suggest that learning new things keeps our brains in a state of preserving and creating new neural connections rather than weeding out the connections we do not use on a daily basis.

To sum up all that I have been ranting about. Try a bunch of simple things that you haven't really done much before. Then pick one or a few that you seemed to like and take them a little further. Next thing you know, you have a past-time that you can enjoy whenever you are not engaged in the best hobby of all times (fishing, obviously  :P )

Fishing- fly, gear and ice
Fly tying
Hunting small game from time to time

I use to keep tropical fish and maintained a reef tank for years... until I got rehooked on fishing almost 5 years ago and a power outage crashed my tank, it never got revived.

In the winter, I’m 100% ice fishing.

In the summer, I dedicate a lot of time to our garden.

In the Fall, I’m totally into Halloween, and I spend a lot of time making my own props and decorations for our house.

Recently, I got into the aquarium hobby, and I have a 40 gallon planted aquarium that is a constant work in progress.  I can get my fish fix when I’m not out on the ice!

I should add that I don’t have nearly as much time for my list as I have a little buddy that will be turning two at the end of January. not my child but my best friend became a single mom, and I basically became the dad when he was born.

Nice tank! Well planted and aquascaped. Beautiful pic of that dwarf gourami.
As for fishy fixes, as I said I use to keep tanks, but I still work in a pet store as the aquatics specialist so I’m always catching fish, just they are smaller than most of our bait and it’s with a net and container.

The seasons flow like this for my brother and I:

In winter we ice fish and talk over how we are going to approach making maple syrup.
When we are making maple syrup we talk about dirt track racing because my nephew (his son in law) and my niece (his daughter) run dirt modifieds.
As racing season is winding down we start trying to pin down a time when we make horseradish.
When our eyes are burning from grinding horseradish we discuss ice fishing.

Rinse and repeat.

I used to fish in the soft water months a ton but having a three year old kinda takes precedence over that. There were years I’d be muskie fishing 5-6 days a week from the season opener until it closed. On days when I wasn’t slinging heavy baits I’d be waist deep in a small trout stream. If those seasons were not open I’d be in the boat going after something else.

With the youngling my focus has shifted more towards putting together an insane garden because she enjoys it immensely.

I too used to raise Tropical fish. Angel Fish, Plecostomus, Many different cat fish, Albino,Peppered Corydoras, Emerald Green Corydoras,Swartzs Corydoras and gave it up because I couldn't sell them in my area. I think I will have to start fly fishing the river since I haven't ever tried that.
I too smoke food, using my Traeger Grill. Used to have a huge garden but my knees and hands have arthritis too bad these days.

Almost everything interests me. I have a hard time choosing one at times. Lesse:

I like to eat therefore I love to cook. Done everything from sushi to sauerbraten and I'm not afraid to tackle anything. Make a mean pulled pork my jerk is the best this side of Jamaica.

I am an extremely broken chili head. Hot chilies in almost everything at some point. Raise 'em, can 'em, pickle 'em, make sauce (several kinds) as long as I can eat 'em. Carry a shaker of "volcano dust" (habanero + naga morich + fatali + reaper/bubblegum 7-pot) where ever I go.

Fishing of any kind. My open water focus has been muskies. Good enough to win or place in tournaments about half the time. I'm working on broadening my horizons so walleye and panfish are frequent targets. If it has to be bass I prefer smallies but stinky ol' black bass will do. Ice sees me targeting pike or walleye but I've been getting better with a jig rod for pannies.

Let's make some lures. Anything that can be made from wire, rubber/tinsel, hair or lead is fair game for me. Much of it is replicating or tweaking existing stuff though I do have some unique items.

Working on boats: wiring, motors, anything marine can pique my interest. I've usually got at least three in the yard, two of which are projects.

I like fabricating tools to make some of my hobby jobs easier. Wire benders/twisters, bobber stop jigs, custom lead or rubber molds...

Built a few rods and repaired a pile.

I like to shoot both handguns and long guns, reload ammo and hunt deer and pheasants.

Then there's the misunderstood thing. All I'll say is this:

Not one of mine but what I like to work with.

I think that's about enough...

Well I'm a little boring. No kids and just the wife.
1. I fish summer and ice average about 200 trips per year.
2. I enjoy watching western movies
3. Enjoy taking the wife out for a date night at least once a month usually 2 times.
4. Trying to find the ultimate ice auger that I like!!  ::) ;D

OK I admit it all I want to do is fish!

Ice fishing is my favorite but I also like:

1.  Fishing:  Steelhead/salmon fishing the rivers.  Walleye and perch in the boat.
2.  Center-pining.  Still learning
3.  Making any kind of modifications to my boat, shanty or gear to help make life easier.
4.  Hunting:  mostly small game, get out to deer hunt maybe 1-2 times.
5.  Reloading:  just getting started again after helping my dad 20+ years ago.
6.  AR-building:  always learning.
5.  Working out: focus on strength & body building but getting to the point where I am happy to avoid injuries and lift/move as much as yesterday..
6.  Going to kids activities.
7.  Accumulating fishing stuff of all kinds.
8.  Learning more about each one of my hobbies.

Thanks! It's what I love to do. Those two 27 lbers were caught during Salmon-a-rama this past July before my daughter was born. Nothing like being out on that lake and watching your rod double over from a king salmon (obviously very weather-dependent). I do walleyes in spring and fall inland, but I'll chase steelhead, coho, lakers, and browns when the weather cooperates... But nothing gets my heart pumping like a big king.

Wow, nice haul!! I just started kayak fishing in MN not long ago, can't imagine it out on lake Michigan targeting kings.

Being a machinist by trade the last thing I want to do is start up a power tool for fun...
Hence I love to hunt and fish, in general get outside.
Metal detecting, hiking, skiing and snowshoeing have helped with cabin fever also.
Being a new empty nester spending time with the wife on any of the above is priority.
May start gardening, which the wife does now.
I also love to tinker with boats, rebuilt a Craig's list special a couple of years ago.

Dude!  That mower kicks ass! What would that cost a guy? The restoration work, and or, a finished mower?

@p. Smith How many # you pulling back on that long bow ?? Just to let people know this is not like hunting with those sisy compound bows.. this is why I ask.cause he hunts bears... . there is 0% let off and your holding the amount back he states  before you release.. so to hold it back and have game not turned right equals bad opertunity as in a missed shot or a gut shot animal.. I know your a big guy cause of the mma I guessing 50 to 70 #  but might be up wards of a 120# pull. .

I got my recurves  the biggest pull back is 70# smallest 35# biggest pull back was on a pse king fisher I restrung with a fast flight string from 3 rivers archery..  the next smallest was a warden bow from cabelas at 50#...  the next smallest of mine is a hastings action bolt at 48#pull...  next lightest  is a bear polar bear silver medalion with a 45#...  lastly  is a york brand at 35#  my dad's father bought him to get hunting...

I have been wanting to try a bear bow with a 120#pull back but just have not had the right timeing to find one..

I do admire you for buidling your own bows p. smith that's one Hobbie I want to try sooner or later.. by the time I get to it I may only be able to pull back 35# and be weak and frail by then..

Boy IDK, I bought it locally for $120 to tinker with since I always wanted a ford yard tractor. I have another $200 in it right now and a ton of time. Still needs a carb, drivebelt and some more tinkering with the transmission. I might just offload it for $750ish when done. I was going to use it plow snow but it looks too damn nice to get all dirty lol

Lefty, my primary hobby is fishing as well. I just started a new hobby - making my own plastic baits. Being as cheap as I am, I also make my own molds out of Plaster of Paris. I have made a mold for Senkos, various paddle tails, sharp tail worms, Burkes 5" earthworm, 7" FinS, 5" FinS. gonna work on a couple of other molds soon.

Nice molds hammah! BTW I prefer "value minded" as opposed to "cheap". Have you checked out a product called Durhams Rock Hard Putty? I've used that for lead molds and properly dried/cured they are remarkably durable. Much more so that Plaster. Find it at your local hardware store, probably very close to the PoP.

easy enuf to do, too. Plaster is cheap, (I mean inexpensive) so if you don't like what you did, you can toss is and try again. I think I only tossed 1 mold. It's fun. Just got to be well ventilated cuz the fumes are not healthy for you.

Rock Hard Putty? will withstand the high temp of melted lead?. I have been thinking of making shad  and bullet heads

I used it for some prototype and knockoff molds for short run lead. Gotta be completely dried out or they'll crack instantly from the steam from the internal moisture. A few hours in the oven low and slow works. Much harder than plaster and better detail (IMO). I'd think it would be a much more durable choice for plastic pouring. With lead if I was careful I'd get several dozen pours with lead before I started to see issues with chipping and cracking of the mold. Bear in mind that lead pours at a much hotter temp than plastic, around 650F and lead cools comparatively hard as opposed to plastic.

Really, unless you have a unique mold design or tweak, commercially available molds are relatively inexpensive and last for thousands of pours with minimal care. Around $35 gets you a standard aluminum mold in your choice of style with multiple sizes. If you shop fleaBay you can score an excellent used (or even unused) mold for as little as $20.

I've got some Alumilite stuff I have yet to play with as well. Silicone mold material for plastic, lead or resin casting and some cool powder for coloring plastics almost like paint. Based on the look of your molds you may have seen some of their stuff on youtube (marbles to index the mold halves  ;D)

lefty2053, I'm with you, getting OLD... fishing is my primary recreational activity. I still hunt and trap, but just in a very limited way. Most of my hobbies are done the same way, very limited. Except eating, it's the one hobby where I can excel!   ;D

Eating
Fishing; ice, kayak, fly
Dr. Appointments
Hunting; turkey, deer
Trapping
Gardening
NHL. Blackhawks
NASCAR, Chase Elliot
Woodworking
Collecting Outdoor Stuff; lures, traps, reels, licenses, whatever strikes me...
I also play around with making short videos(YouTube)and watching YouTube videos
And yes eating!

Doing a little trapping while waiting for the ice can be rewarding...

When I'm not fishing it's because I am either working, taking care of my two kids or playing hockey. I hunt also but haven't done much hunting in the past few years.
