Just wondering if anyone modifies their ice jigs by bending the hooks up a little and or off to one side. I've read different fishing articles that claim it can improve hook sets.

I do for sure.. even on Swedish pimples wile jigging with single hooks.. what happens is they hit the pimple and don't get hooked!! cause the hook was flat and mouth would slip over hook by accident cause bend was towads them.. so bending hook to one side instead of opening equaled more hook ups.. and for crappie I open the gape up there moths are a little bigger then blue gills .. so they tend to spit hooks easier.. so make sure your hooks are sharp!!

+1 on the sharp hooks. Get a sharpener like a Rapala and home em down until they pass the fingernail test! ;D
-
Be careful not to incude spin by modifying the hook. A horizontal jig with the hook pointed up makes hook setting harder sometimes
-
off setting your single hooks a bit should increase your hookups ,even when tying my hair jigs hard and soft water I off set them to and I carry a small soft stone to touch up hooks if needed
Try a couple and see for yourself

Thanks for the replies and advise, I'm going to bend a few hooks this season and see what happens.

I have always bent my hooks to one side. Had an old man teach me this when I was a kid, and we won't go into just how long ago that was. He said " a straight hook you keep, fish return to the deep."

I open the gaps on a lot of my tungsten gill jigs.. After 10 swings and missed, you either do something about it, or stay stupid.

Most definitely.

i used to buy treble hooks that were already bent to the side, but the tungsten jig hooks are fragile and they break easy so i don't mess with them. seems like they are tempered. a cheap lead jig hook could be bent.

Stinger hooks on the tungsten?? Ever try it?? Small size 16 or 18 treble tied on with mono... might work??

no sir. one hook is bad enough to get most times even on spoons i use a single hook. thanks tho.
i used to break them too often until i bought the tooth pick for hook removal. also, i target pan fish if that helps any what i use.

yes i bend the hooks. crush the barb on bigger perch jigs for better turnaround time. change a lot of the factory hooks on spoons etc to a single with a bend in it. made sure your drag and line are strong enough to set the hook well on bigger fish.

Fastach!
Amazing seeing these before they went to production, he also invented the Zero Twist drop shot hooks we tested for a season then licensed them to VMC.

Never tried bending mine. The Fiskas I use seem to do just fine the way they are. Never seen the need. jmo

I like em but don't use heavy baits like Kastmasters, buckshots or vibratos. I've lost a few lures when they fasdetached.
