Do gills spawn twice?
« on: Feb 07, 2005, 02:21 AM »
I was talking to a guy in Gander today about fishing & techniques (man i love my job) and he said that he thinks that gills spawn twice, once in spring & once in late summer.  I thought this was bunk, but I figured I'd see if anyone else has heard of this.

Always wear clean underwear, cuz ya never know when the paramedics are gonna have to cut your pants off.

i've never heard of it, but smallmouth and largemouth bass have been found to spawn twice, but it is a very rare occurence...seeing as bluegills are fairly closely related to bass, i would guess that it is very possible.

I've heard of it, but it is extremely rare up here, it almost never happens...
Down in the South, its different experience, its fairly common down there

In Nebraska gills will spawn or attempt to spawn, in the spring and again in the fall in most sandhill lakes. A fall spawn in reservoirs is unlikely due to draw down.

Why is it, then, that I have never once caught a gill full of eggs in the summer or early fall?  I've caught hundreds while trolling weedbeds for 'eyes on crawlers all year long, & the only time I've seen 'em full of eggs is in the spring.

This site http://msucares.com/pubs/publications/p1892.htm

says:
Bluegill may spawn as many as five times in one season, while redear sunfish normally spawn only twice. Bream spawn in groups, and their collections of nests are called spawning "beds."

that would be in Mississippi, so I would imagine if the conditions were right they could spwan a couple times in the spring and summer in northern climates.

Regardless, I'm with fishahaulic on this one. Never even heard of gills with fully developed eggs other than after February or later. Unless of course, they are shooting blanks maybe when they do.
Better stock up on the "viag-rapalas" just in case!

Its not like a spring/fall thing. Its actaully a moonphase thing. I dont know about individual fish but as a species its more thab once.
Every plastics manufacturer claims plastics outfish livebait. So now I use livebait just for the increased challenge.
