Grayling through the ice!
« on: Dec 04, 2004, 03:04 AM »
I GOT EM! Fishing in Fielding Lake.

Thanksgiving weekend I caught my first grayling through the ice, and I was jigging for laketrout when I caught it! It was 16-18" long. I thought it was odd that a grayling went for a hook so large. I caught it on a chrome 2 1/2" Buzz Bomb

I was using herring for bait, but the peice fell off. I was in 8' of water.

It took it 3 or 4 tries to get hooked, but he was persistant! The hook barley fit in it's mouth. I ended up bringing two up, but it may have been the same fish twice.

Ice is about 2' thick.  Ended up catching 1 lake trout, 3 burbot, and the 2 grayling.  Had a great time!

Did you catch the burbot on the buzz-bomb as well?

Caught the burbut and the laker on a peice of whitefish belly sitting on the bottom.

Have you tried herring on the bottom as well?  I need to take a trip or two north this year for lakers, burbot, and pike.

Herring works well too.  This was the first time I tried whitefish, and I was very happy with the durability of it!  I caught 4 fish using the same peice of bait.

Last year, I accidently cooked he herring while thawing it out.  It then turned to mush.  So, I took a rag and cut it in squares, put a blob of mush onto each square, tied the square up into a ball using fishing line, inserted hook, let em freeze.  Worked great!  I was fishing for burbut only.

Ever think about trying squid?  Talk about durable.  I've used it for halibut and sole.  A little goes a looooonnnngggggg way.  I need to learn how to catch burbot this year.  All I need is the time,

Not sure if Fred Meyers still carries it, but they used to sell a seafood mix that had squid, clams, octopus and several other fishy things. It worked real well for bait and wasn't all that expensive. I still like raw shrimp cut into small pieces, stays on the hook and the fish like it when placed on a small jig or spoon.

Yes the best burbot bait here in northern BC. I use the tentacles and they are dynamite especially if you soak them in a special sauce ;)2 ;)2 ;)2
