Flip down shanty anchors
« on: Feb 22, 2004, 08:28 PM »
For those of you with the flip-down portable shanties...

How many anchors do you use?

How do you deal with shifting winds?

Was out today and the wind was gusting from different directions every 10 minutes...

Did you make any modifications to your shanties to help with anchoring?

Thanks,
Bob

The last time I was out in wind like that I just left my shanty folded up and fished off a bucket. Yeah it stunk, but the walleye were going crazy so it helped passify me. I worry about the thing self'destructing in the wind. The sound inside from that is crazy enough. I have been inside it in some pretty crazy wind, but I still get nervous. Once, we were fishing and I didn't have any anchors our and my buddy went os to have a smoke. The wind came up and made a sailboat out of it. I went for a ride.

I bought a set of the StrikeMaster Ice Anchors this season and they work great. I tossed the plastic hardware they supplied and used SS eye bolts on my Pro. In shifting winds there is not much you can do except anchor the rear of the shanty and step on the canopy poles to keep the front down.

I have a Trap II that has pockets along the front for weight. I cut 2 - 11/4" pieces of pvc with caps. I keep them in the shanty. When the wind is wicked, I take a cap off and dip them in the ice hole filling them with water. Recap then slide them in the pockets. That will keep the sides down. Anchor out the sides and you are in.

I like to drill my holes and kick the ice shavings where my shanty will be. Then pull your shanty so it sits on top of the shavings. The shanty sled will settle and shavings will "form" to the groves in the bottom of your sled. I also have a Fish Trap II and I ripped a 2 x 4 in half and it fit perfect in those pockets. I just leave them in there. Above all if the wind is blowing I just stay seated and fish fish fish! Why get up and go out in that nasty wind anyway! ;)2

Why to tend a flag of course!!  ;D  FISH ON!!  ;D

Confucius say: "Rod in hand, warm, is better than two flags up, out in cold".
Very wise!
