Wool lined choppers
« on: Dec 02, 2008, 11:14 AM »
Anybody know where to find the old style wool-lined leather choppers in central MN, the cities, or on the internet? My last pair wore out and all I can seem to find are thinsulate ones. I love the chopper style mitts for ice fishing 'cause with the flick of a wrist you can be out of them and haulin' tipup line dang quick but I can't seem to find any around. So, does anyone know of a baitshop or website or somewhere that has them? Thanks in advance for any leads

Have you checked Fleet Farm?

I will second the Fleet Farm suggestion, or try Mimbach's behind the Honda House in St Cloud.

I'm on my way to fleet farm tonight, it is the last big place I have to look. I might try Mimbach's tonight as well, not that far away from it. Thanks for the suggestions, heading out to the ice wednesday, may not need 'em yet but hopefully I do before too long.

Thanks for the info, found some lined choppers at fleet farm and bought some wool inserts for them. I was just looking for the older style that they used to sell- wool lined instead of thinsulate or that sort of stuff. My last pair was about 10 yrs old and just got wore out but they were the old rough leather type with actual wool lining. Either way, thanks for the info, I found some that will make due

Did you get deerskin? My buddy has a pair of moosehide choppers. He says they are a lot more durable than the deerskin.

I have a pair of the deerskin. I do not use them much. I don them when I am feeling nostalgic.

Deerskin, I am not giving up my quest for the perfect pair though, I am going to look into maybe having a pair made. I have heard the same about moosehide, who knows, maybe someday I will walk into some small town baitshop and find the ones that are right for me, my buddy is also looking for another pair (same situation). I might just have to buy about 6 pairs if I ever find the ones I'm looking for. To me they are the perfect ice fishing mitten, easy on, easy off and with real wool lining they stay warm when wet.

I'm in the same situation my old choppers have been wore out for about 5 yrs now but i keep using them because i can't find ones like the ones i have.  i have seen the fleet farm choppers and they may due but why would something so good just go away? OK I'm done whining now.

I am going to have to disagree on them being the perfect glove or mitten. They are very warm but I am partial to gloves versus mittens. I know mittens are warmer but I like having individual fingers for fishing.

I have a pair of the Cabela's Pinnacle gloves. They are great on the ice and on the snowmobile.

I have a couple of pair of insulated deer skin gloves from Sam's Club I bought for $19.99 for two pair. They have great digital dexterity.

Fleece lined or insulated work gloves are nice and can be had pretty cheap.

of all the gloves i have owned over the years i have never found a pair to keep my hands warm they been frost bit a few times and of all the gloves i think those brown jersey glove that are like 2.00 a pair work as well as any the only bad thing they get wet pretty fast. when I'm attending a tip-up gloves,MIT's are off i can't seem to do things with anything on my hands that why i like the choppers flick them off and do what you gotta do put them on again and your hands warm back up quickly.

I use polypropylene glove liners. They are warm and dry quickly. Keep a couple of pair in the pocket. When one gets wet switch. The wet ones will dry in a short time as you rotate them between your hands and your pockets.

These are the ticket!

I will wear these until it is VERY cold, and then I wear choppers over them. The best pair of choppers that I have ever owned were sheepskin with the wool still on the hide. It was like wearing an inside out lamb on my hands. Stupid dog chewed them up and I have never been able to find another pair. They may have been an Amish hand made thing.

Nope, they are acrylic knit with a grippy rubber dipped palm. They are warm, dry super fast, and wont soak stuff up through the palm.

Kaplan Bros. in Brooklyn Park MN. will have them. I bought a pair from them 2-3 years ago. Deerskin choppers and separate wool liners. Just like in the old days! Nothing but the best.
