brook trout spitting the hook?
« on: Dec 18, 2012, 02:58 PM »
I have a native brook trout pond near my house and the brook trout quite often spit the hook after a few feet. I am using a clear leader and a fairly small hook ( I think it's a 6) with a small shiner. And tips?

Try a 6 circle hook and hook some bait through the back and through the lips and see if it solves your problem or let it run a little longer.  Often times if I'm into the smaller trout I'll hook the bait through the lips and hook into the fish when through the back isn't working.  Jigging with a swedish pimple will land you a few, just tip the hook with a piece of worm.

I use number 6 or 4 octopus hooks. They're the only hooks I use while trout fishing anything from stream brookies to giant spring run steelhead.

Maybe try an automatic fisherman or a jaw jacker. Those might help.

Or make your own slammer boards. They work wonders. There's a lot of info on here about them and they're cheap to make.

open your bail and get a small stick pull the line and wrap it on the stick so your bait wont free fall. when a fish hits the stick "trips" or goes flying in the air and your bail is open to let the fish free run with the bait then pick up your rod pop the bail over and smack em works great for all types of fish especially those trout that dont like any line resistance

Use a size smaller treble red lazer sharp work great hooking them in the side or back and let them take it longer don't get in a hurry stay away for two or three mins and let them eat it smaller bait like rosey reds work well here
jiffy model 30 the only ice auger because the bells and wissles wont  cut ice.

Small minnow, small treble hook.....hook it through the nose. Most trout I catch seem to swallow the bait head first giving you the best chance to hook em.
I wish I was in heaven sittin down..........on a 5 gallon pail!
