Fellow Ice Trollers I need some advice
« on: Dec 05, 2011, 04:30 PM »
It's like I have ADD on the ice.  I am contantly drilling holes and then bouncing around.  What I like to do is take the wheeler to my fishing spot and drill 40 or so holes and start bouncing around.  Here is my dilemna:
1.  Early season I obviously can't take the wheeler so I walk.  Even when I can take the wheeler I don't start it and pullit ahead teh 10 feet or so everytime to fish the next hole.
2.  I have either a 3 person Fishtrap flip over or a medium (60 ish inches long) Otter sled.

I like the seats on the Trap but it gets heavy pulling it from spot to spot when I am by myself.  The otter sled is nice but has no seat.  I looked into the otter seats but they are like $150.  It is too much to carry my rod case ( I use a croxton with rod cases and tackle storage all in one), bait, flasher, etc.

What do you guys do?  I am trying to keep cost down since I just bought a new ice suit.  I am debating a Jet Sled, the new Shappell FX 50 windbreak, or a 1 person flip over.

I have a one person flipover for when the weather is nasty or really cold, the rest of the time I have a glide-lite, http://strikemaster.com/store/icefish_accessories/glide_lite.html.
Super lite, holds everything but the auger, and is unbelivably easy to pull even when overloaded (you can pull it with one finger no problem on sheet ice or deep snow)

I like those Glide Lite sleds.
I could fit it on the back of the wheeler when there is enough ice and its definitely lite enough to pull on early ice.
On another tangent do you guy's think those Hyfax kits make the sleds pull easier?

Frabill Just came out with a bunch of new sleds, all with closing lids and whatnot, two sizes. check their site, but pricey. I go with a jet sled, but im just walking, Im a fan of leap frogging, then hunker down on my favorite spot at sunset.

I set up on structure that I locate during the summer in the boat. I set up the frabill and swiss cheese the entire area, anywhere from 10 or up to 25 or 30 holes depending on the size of the structure. I carry a small jig box in my ice suit bibs, 2 jig rods a skimmer and my tripod stool and I hole hop, I have a small jet sled, but I don't end up using it ! Unless it is -30 and blowing 25 MPH, I am good to go with my ice suit and a small handfull of gear !

Surf,
The only problem with that is I also carry a minnow bucket occasionally and my flasher.  I need more hands.

I looked at the Frabill Shuttles over the weekend. I wasn't very impressed. I would rather get a jet sled or glide light and customize to my specific needs than to try and make one of these work.

The small jet sled is nice. its even nicer when you install some handles on the top/sides to easily lift it up off the ground. simple mod and cheap.

I agree Gordo, they seem heavy too. Im sure they work and all, just not worth the price. they seem to have alot of wasted space.
I have a jet sled Jr, i have a small car, its the only one that fits in the trunk.

Jet Sled Jr., is my first ice or distance walking sled, small and compact, easy to pull by hand, take the minimal amount of  fishing gear.

Prob the nicest part about the glide lite for me is the rod holder placement, easy access and keeps them from getting tangled or broken plus you can use it as a rod holder for a dead stick while your sitting on the bucket

Love Mine. Holds all a jigger needs. Pulling it is a breeze.
