I heard back from them.  They thanked me for my honesty and offerd to give me a $20 gift certificate if I want to return the rod.  So i guess you can be rewarded for doing the right thing.

Karma thing isn't working yet though.  Saw almost no deer over the weekend :-\

Good things take time, and your a stand up guy in my book.

Did they pay for the shipping or is that going to come out of your $20 reward? Going to be around $10 to send it back UPS.

Just think, with that $20 you got free shipping on your next order! LOL ;D

FYI, RMA = Return Merchandise Authorization

It's a little shipping sticker, sent to you for free return shipping and is to cover the label that got the parcel to you, in the first place.      ;)2

I'm not sure about ju-ju, but 'know' karma is for real. For me, every time I pulled one of those rods out of the bucket to use it, I'd be reminded of exactly how I got it. I think you have done the right thing here smbrickner and should be commended for doing so. Well done, sir.

If you gave someone an extra 100 dollar bill by mistake, what would you want them to do?

I had a similar situation with Cabela's about 2 years ago and they just told me to keep it and thanks for being honest and to have a Merry Christmas.  There are a lot of companies out there that could learn from Cabela's customer service model...

So what you gonna do with the $20 gift card?  I think you should donate it to a local kids fishing derby as a prize or to be used for prizes...

anyway you did the standup thing and should be commended for it!

Good Fishing

Legal but not morally correct. Has to be malice of forethought to be a crime, you have to have had the intention of stealing it.. not having it show up at your doorstep. Since it was accidentally sent to him, he has no legal obligation to send it back.

Legally, I believe it is called 'theft by conversion', but then IANAL.

Nope, completely legal. Since it was sent to him, it is  the fault of the sender and the person who receives it has no responsibility to send it back.

Like I said IANAL, but under tort law, I believe, an item received in error is still legally the property of the sender.

Karma will be there when you least expect it...and may not even notice it's arrival.
We can all say "It's a big company, they don't miss little things." But it adds up. And they have accountants noticing. That adds to inflation, which hurts us in the end.

You now have $20 more than before. There's your instant karma.  ;)

p.s. Iceassin, I saw your comment about me. I don't mind being called a fisherman . That whole "women's rights" messed up my life. I could've stayed home (a.k.a. been fishing) while my husband was working.  ;)
Not that I have a husband. Darn, gotta go to work tomorrow.  :'(

Only a person with morals can have a moral dilemna.  You have morals and knew what to do before you posted.  But there was an internal struggle.

You did the right thing.  If you had given it to a kid, you were giving something that didn't belong to you.  I don't believe in Karma as it implies a belief in reincarnation.  But it's a handy word that's easier to say than "The consequences of your actions."  If you're a good hunter, you'll get the deer.

You did the right thing.  No bells, whistles, parades or payback.  All you get is self respect and the respect of many that read the post.  That's enough.

Karma is not working? Twenty dollars ahead, a clear conscience, respect of family, friends and fellow sportsmen, and sportswomen.  You can't apply Karma as needed, it will just happen. Have you spent that twenty "bucks" yet...

FWIW, some of the best deeds and charitable work go unnoticed and unannounced.

*  If you really want to know the Joy of Christmas and charitable deeds, become a Silent Santa. Find a local Christmas tree decorated with childrens names and give them a small Christmas. Won't go into details, but there were many tears of happiness and thanks from mothers, and sparkles and lights in the eye's of a child... 'nuff said. :::sniff sniff:::

Years ago I ordered a dozen goose decoys from Cabela's and received two dozen. I called them and told them what had happened and asked how to ship them back. They said "It was our mistake just keep them.". I thought that was pretty nice of them.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Asking the opinion of a bunch of bozo internet ice fishers is ridiculous. Do what you feel right doing.

That's one bozo's opinion.
