Any of u ever chum for pike with definitive success?
« on: Nov 28, 2012, 08:26 PM »
Heard that wet cat food works.  Perhaps chumming bring little fish which in turn brings the toothy critters? Any body have any *real* success ? Regards FT

Yes.  I use sardines when spearing and have watched northerns ignore my decoys and eat the sardines off the bottom.

Cheapest I can find in a can.

I've tried fresh smelt from the market, but it's far more expensive, less convenient, and IMO doesn't work as well.

It's also illegal to leave minnows, waxworms, or any other foreign matter on the ice/in the water....

As far as legality you will need to check regulations in your area. Here in WI anything you put down the hole that is not a part of your bait or lure is considered "littering" and you will catch a ticket.

This means oats or corm meal for pannies, whole corn kernels for carp, egg shells to brighten the bottom for spearing visibility, any kind of fish or fish parts that aren't held by a hook, spam, hot dogs, well.....anything. Pretty definitive here. Not that some folks don't do it, I just hate leaving myself open to harassment by a warden; kinda takes the fun out of it.......

Not that I don't think about it......... One way around might be to use a retrievable chum bag. Put your stuff in and lower it down. This would also allow you to shake it from time to time to redistribute the aroma.

there is absolutely no reason to chum big pike...i would much rather have my bait be the only food around for a pike to catch the scent of and hone in on.
trout make big pike fat and happy!

i smash lil gills at the hole and wash them in. the more sent the better attracting power! you can also save the scales from your catches(if you scale your catch) and chum with those.  here in Indiana chum IS legal and deadly, although its not majic.  you still have to do your homework on location.
real fishermen don't ask "where you catch those"
