Lossing pike that spool out the entire reel
« on: Jan 30, 2011, 05:49 PM »
I had three pike spool out the reel this weekend and I lost two of the three. I had to set the hook as the were running and lost them about half way to the hole. I was using 6-7 inch live shiners and suckers. I'm assuming that they only grabbed the bait by the head and took off. I was considering using a combination of quick strike rigs and the rubber band trick but I'm just not sure how this will change the behavior of the bait or alter make the pike more weary of my bait. I also clip the tails of the bait.

I'd suggest putting more line one your spool. I have about 150 yards on each of mine, never been spooled.

I decided to respool my tip ups and the ones i got for my son so I removed the old line before I purchased the new line. When it came time to purchase new line in November I had trouble finding it. I ended up putting about 75 yards on each tip up. I found line later on but I'd hate to waste the line I have on it now.

if you have 5 tip ups take line off of number 2 and 4 and tie the line to the line on tip ups 1 and 3 and then just add line to tip up number 5 from the new line you purchased

Thats a good idea. A lot of work for the ten tip ups i have. 5 for me and 5 for my son but it would solve the issue of wasting the line and being spooled out. Happen 6 times this year.  Thanks

simple...
get a good 30# mono line and put that on first.
tie a uni knot
fill with your regular line. right now you can find REALLY cheap 1000 yd spools.
an example...

lots of goood cheap choices out there. i change my backing every year!
Lack of planning on your part in NO way constitutes an EMERGENCY on mine

I'd just tie the new line to the old line.. that way to won't waste it. Some of my spools have 100yds of 20-30 lb line, then 75 yds of 50 lb.

I always use my older braid as backing. during open water season i spool 100 yards on top of whats left of my old braid. tie it with a blood knot.

also just bought 1200 yards of berkley big game, for a few bucks

i've had bass run off over 70 yards of line.  pike usually get hit before they get 50 yards off the spool.   trout tend to run a bit faster and further than that.   i like to put 100 yards of line minimal on my tip-ups.  old line for backing never hurts. i use a double clinch knot line to line.  i'm never concerned with cutting off a few feet and doing a re-tie if/when i see something i don't like if i know i've got lots of line left on the spool.

agree with the mono backing.  put on some cheap 20# big game on first, then you should still have room for 100yds +/- of 30# dacron.  Mono isn't as easy on the hands but if a big gator is at stake, it beats losing a big fish and all your line as well as killing the fish because of its 150ft line tag.
