Pickeral (nuisance or fun)??
« on: Jan 15, 2008, 12:37 AM »
I've definately heard both viewpoints while out on the ice,  I was curious wether you guys dread a pickeral bite, or wait hopefully for one. Personally I love to catch the energetic little buggers especially once they get some size to them.  What do you think?

Great fish to bring kids or newbies out to fish for. Almost garunteed to bite and you can catch some big fish.

They do save the day on fishless days. When a kid feels their tug and then a nice size, toothy fish come on the ice, it makes their day! FUN!!!

They are fun and I most definitely go out a couple times a year and target them!
I have even been known to fillet a few every couple years. If done right, no bones and very tasty!

Catching fish and being cold-vs- being cold.  I'll take catching the fish.

It depends.  If I'm tipup fishing fishing, its alright, because it keeps me busy.  However, when I'm jigging for crappies, I hate thinking I've hooked a big crappie, only to find out that its a dink pickerel, who's swallowed my jig.  I'm not usually too happy to see them at that point.

A couple lakes I fish for Pike have them and they come with the territory when targetting Pike (Northerns). They are great for when bringing the kids or when the bite is slow, but for the most part I consider them bait thieves. They pretty much fight like a dish rag, absoulutlely no fight at all. It seems as though they have a never ending appetite. I wish we could geneticaly alter  their feeding habits in to the fish we desire more.  ;D

I look at them both ways. They can be a real PIA but on a slow day they can be alot of fun.

It all depends on what your fishing for. I love to catch them in the summer on the ultra light when fising for perch but, nothing is worse than losing expensive crankbaits or jigs when fishing for bass. All in all I feel the positives out weight the neg.

Lets see...

they pull hard and are fun to catch

they are necessary on most lakes to keep the panfish in check

they are delicious if filleted correctly

They get my vote!

I have respect for any fish that i catch.  i hate seeing them frozen sitting right next to a hole.  I did throw a fish on the bank to die for the first time in many years this year.  it was a round goby. my vote... fun

I was reminded of an saying while fishing with my 4 year old son a few weeks ago..."one mans trash is another mans treasure".  He had a great time chasing flags and pulling up pickerel all morning long. I am actually quite grateful for pickerel because if we didn't chase flags and catch fish it might have been his last time going. Instead, he cant wait to get back out and ice fish.
Honestly, I ticks me off  to see any fish laying on the ice like trash. Some kid would love to catch that nuisance fish and so would I.

I would say that there fun. Most of the time when nothing else is hitting you can usually get the snakes to start. I do agree with chenbasshead. Im not happy when im jiggin for bull gills and i think i got a slammer on then i find out its a snake and its just cut up my two pound test. But hey thats fishing and i love it. So I say yeah there fun.

Pickerel are one of my favorite fish. I think they are one of the coolest looking fish also.  Like Skunker said flags fly when they are around.

If I'm using tip ups, I don't like them but,  I don't mind them.
If I'm jigging for perch, I HATE them.

If I'm fishing a bass tourney in the summer.... I DISPISE THEM...

Besides since they've taken off in Saratoga Lake, the number of pike has gone way down.

I have probably caught in the vicinity of 2-300 pickerel  just in the past 3 or 4 years. Where are you guys catching these pickerel that fight? Northerns, Trout & Salmon fight. I'd put a 20 Laker, Brookie, or Brown up against a 25 inch pickerel and I gurantee that you could have the Pickerel filleted and on a grill by the time you get one of the trout in.. Pickerel fight, LOL. You guys are killing me.
