Be careful out there, a snowmobiler went through the ice on Sacandaga near the dam.  The guy was in the water for an hour!!  Hope he's ok.

Wow, I can't believe it a snowmobling accident that didn't involve alcohol.

Anyway lets hope he has a quick recovery.

Very unfortunate.  Hopefully if the guy was tough enough to hold out for an hour in the water, he should be tough enough to make it out of the hospital.  Hope he makes a full recovery.

Here is the story from WNYT Channel 13's website:

Man in water for 1 hour after falling through ice

Snowmobile driver plunges into lake

HADLEY, Jan. 25
By WNYT Staff

A Gloversville man is clinging to life after his snowmobile plunged into Sacandaga Lake.

Thirty-five-year-old Kenneth Boger was listed in critical condition Tuesday night at Glens Falls Hospital.

Police say Boger and another man were snowmobiling on the lake when they hit a soft spot of ice.

He spent an hour clinging to a patch of ice before rescue crews pulled him to shore.

This is why I carry ice picks and a LONG rope!! Either of them would have helped this guy. If you don't have picks, get some ASAP! It could save your life someday.

I totally agree with Bussman. If you have been heading out on the ice recently you had better have ice picks, rope and hopefully a fishing partner with you.
Stay safe

Just a quick question to you experienced guys..  I would never go on the ice near that damn. I would stay a good 1/4 mile away from it.  Wouldn't you always expect an undercurrent.  I know the dam is not open that much because the lake has been rising but there is always some flow.  The lake is narrow there (sort of like a funnel to the dam)  I know there is that little park there where it would make it easy to park and fish,  but I wouldn't expect the ice to be very safe there no matter what the ice conditions are on the rest of the lake. What are your opinions on this?   Or I am just over cautious.   :-\

If he was riding with a friend as stated, why was he in the water for an hour?

Yeah i find that a little weird too.. If it was my buddy I would ethier be in the water with him or have gotten him out.. No way I'm leaving somebody in there for over an hour..

i grew up on the sac and that guy had no business going where he went, he must not of been familiar with the lake. the only reason is was froze there is because they had the dam shut due to rising waters in the river, which in the winter is a rare occasion. most locals know not to get on the ice there. hopes and prayers for the victim.

I agree with pro50guy you should always try to bring some sort of rope with you.  The ice pick's would have been  handy  if there actually was ice there.  Where this guy went through there wasn't even enough ice to walk on.  His buddy couldn't help him because of the ice situation.  I don't know how they were even riding on that part of the lake the Conklinville dam is right there and that usually is last to freeze if it does at all.  There is a channel there.  It is also the deepest part of the whole lake.    Hopefully he will pull through this and be OK.
