I have used my Pro 4 three trips and I'm still on the same bottle.  I have heard 60 -120 holes depending on the ice thinckness.

have the 10" and have over a hundred holes on the tank.  it is a beast and has more HP than the others and it is a 4 stroke.  you can buy a fitting at tractor supply that fits on a 20 pound tank and refill the little bottles.  the fitting is $20.  I have been refilling mine for 3 years now and save a ton of money.

I returned the adapter to fill 1 lb tanks from a 20 lb tank. I used it on three 1 lb. tanks and everyone of them leaked. I did it the right way too - freeze 1 lb tank, turn 20 lb. tank upside down, etc.

never had a problem with refilling mine.  my uncle refills his also and never had a problem.  I would say that maybe you overfilled your tanks but I don't think it is possible to overfill them.

I refill them also and they are possible to overfill. You can check how you are doing with the fill: Tare the bottle on a scale then fill the bottle with propane and weigh it, it should weigh 16 oz. I have had a few maybe an ounce or two over but most are pretty close to a pound. You can vent off some of the propane by pulling on the overflow valve with needle nose pliers but I have heard mixed reports about the safety/effectiveness of doing that, I just burn off a little bit with my heater or lantern....

Everybody gave you the straight scoop so far. The 1# bottles are usually equal to 3/4 of a tank of gas.How many holes also depends on how thick the ice is.

It might be that you are using cheaper tanks.  I have heard that the Coleman tanks do not leak. Something to do with a better quality valve?  However, the Walmart china cheap tanks are prone to leaking. Just a thought after reading your post. Hope this helps.

I saw that.  I just thought they bought the Coleman KS plant. I wasnt aware they bought them out...

Either way good for them.  They manufacture a better cylinder. IMO

Isn't it illegal to transport a refilled propane bottle?

According to The Fed's they are, if refilled,  says it right on the bottle.

Researched the propane transport a little further and came up with this
your guess is as good as mine.

There is no federal (U.S.) contraint whatsoever on refilling a tank, nor for that matter on transporting such a tank whereever you want (provided it is not a federally-controlled road with restrictions on hazardous materials, which is a section of the CFR that nobody here has bothered to point out). There could not possibly ever be any such global constraint on your right to do so under the 10th Amendment. The cited regulations and laws deal specifically with transport in commerce, that is, transport across state lines for the purpose of selling the tank or using them in support of a commercial enterprise (and, under several federal court cases dating back to the 1930s, commercial transport on federally controlled roads – the so-called “implied commerce” argument that gave us the FDA and EPA). The second item is this talk about it being illegal to transport, even in commerce, REFILLED tanks. That is nonsense. It is not illegal to transport a refilled tank, it is illegal to commercially transport improperly LABELED tanks – if you read the citation for 49 U.S.C. 5124 (that’s the one with the prison sentences and all) you’ll see that it establishes penalties for violation of 21 U.S.C. 5104. Section 5104, in turn, is not a REFILLING statue, it is a LABELING statue. The moment you refill a tank you may or may not have created a fire hazard, but you a very definitely created a mislabeled product – and that’s what is illegal.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

I bought a new jiffy propane auger at the end of last year. It works great. I have cut hundreds of holes with it and the one thing that I have noticed is that every tank seems to be differant. I don't think any of the propane tanks have the same amount in them. As far as filling them yourself I would be very careful.
