What are some good tips for flipovers in high wind?
« on: Jan 08, 2013, 08:49 AM »
What are you guys using to keep your shack from blowing away and keeping the flip-over portions from blowing up?

I put the back to the wind and rarely use spreader poles in my clam voyager.

I put the back to the wind and wrap the pull rope around ice anchors. I read where some people are putting eye bolts on their sleds and putting anchors through them.

My problem is I have the clam X4 so both sides flip over. It gets pretty dicey in the wind.

Pick up 4 of these:
Ice Screws used for Ice Climbing

Two on each side, or put them just in front of where the bottom clam bar touches the ice, and tie down from the bar to these.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

Nice, where do you get those and do you screw them in by hand?  I need something to keep both my bottom bars secure against the ice.

They screw i n by hand with ease i might add.

Made for people who climb ice. Light, strong, and can install with one hand.
Just google Ice Screws or ebay.

Heres a guy using one on solid ice.
U see how easy they go in. They are made to hold the weight of a person falling a good 10-15+ feet.

I have a question on this, when you have the back at the wind how do you keep the  wind out of the shelter?  I have a frabil and when I put the back to the wind it came inside bad. But when I turned it around it stayed nice and warm inside. Now I can see in high wind that can be a disaster .

How are you getting wind in from the back? It should be all sealed off unless you have a back door thats not zipped up properly?

Odd, on the Clam there is a rubber gasket that goes around hte back and up each side, and then screws in. Clamping the tent to the tub.
Not sure how Frabill does it.

I was lucky and picked up a load of Irbis screws last year for a song from a guy selling them that a) didn't sell on E-bay and b) didn't know ice guys like us really liked them.  I have enough for myself, friends and family to last the rest of my life.  ;-)

Seriously though, not that I wouldn't want to help a guy out, but these are like hen's teeth, so I'm going to hang onto them for a bit.

I drill self tapping screws through conduit straps with a cordless drill. Easy and quick.
