Waterproofing?
« on: Mar 11, 2011, 06:22 PM »
I have an HT instashak 2 that I bought this season, the last time I went out it was raining and it poured in all the seams. My question is do you guys or can you waterproof a portable and if so what do you use? Thanks everyone in advance.

You can buy waterproofing sprays from any well supplied store that carries camping equipment......get a good tent spray.  We used to use a plain wax candle to rub the seams of our tents in the Boy Scouts....worked fine.  There are special rub-on sticks available in camping supply stores today.   Try "CAMPMOR" in New Jersey, or Cabela's.

Thank you, I wasn't sure if the sprays would damage the material. I'll try a small spot on the skirt to check.

I have a Shappell Rover 2.0 that is about 4 years old.  After the second season, I noticed pin holes occurring at the folds.  I contacted Shappell, and they advised using spray rubber tool paint (Plasti-Dip is one brand) on the interior.  I now spray the interior at the end of each season, and am pleased with the result.  I use pipe insulation on the frame to limit the taping, and find that the results look almost like new.

I was lucky before the season and found a 3M waterproof product on sale at Kmart.  2 cans covered the shanty and cover and it worked great.
