what kind of laker is this?
« on: Feb 22, 2014, 07:38 PM »
I'll upload pictures but today I caught a 20" laker on my light rod while jigging for smelt. It had awesome markings. Almost like a chain pickerel on its back and a little ways down the sides. Any idea? I'll upload the pictures after fishing tmrw.

lets see a pic----lakers can vary alot---some from up in maine are almost black---some are silverish---some have very few spots --some have lots----throw in stocked fish--and you could get almost anything---

To me it looks like a cross between laker and tiger trout?

Looks like some type of hybrid or mutant.  Its tail doesn't even look like a lakers and the head is way out of the norm.

Could it be a splake??? (don't know if they are found in NY, but it was worth a shot to ask)

A very pretty vermiculated lake trout.   Those wormy looking spot patterns are called vermiculations and are typical of lake trout.  Certain ones have more, some have less.  Water color and staining may make them appear more or less prominent.

Thanks for the help guys. There are definitely no splake where I was fishing so I've ruled it as a laker.

Cool ... I thought the head looked messed up because of the glare from the window behind it ...

and a big pat on the back to  Huntyeraws for the "Big word of the day" - vermiculated !

Side note:  vermiculated sounds like it should be used in Horror Movies more often...

Looks like a laker, definitely not a splake. I would guess some type of color variations to it. Excellent catch too by the way!
