Honestly, i think that is a lot for not getting a battery and an ice transducer. The SLT is a pretty old Vex. I would say more than 8 years old. a new ice transducer and a battery will cost about $80 or more(plus you probably need a charger too).  There are better deals out there than this one, but that's just my opinion. I would look for at least a Vexilar FL8-se or a marcum VX-1(if you want zoom).

Check the Vex website for reconditioned units and prices for the parts you will need ifya go ahead with the purchase. Gonna cost a few to get a box, battery , ice ducer etc. The main difference is not the cone angle between the transom mount and the iceducer, they are the same, it is how they hang in the hole. I`m sure ya could make a stik to suspend the transom mount in the hole so it sits level to the bottom of the lake. But I think you may find a reconditioned unit cheaper after ya add the parts list up and may even be able to upgrade to a FL12 Propak or so ifya go recon.

The 9 puck tranducer that you mention I think just means the 9 degree transducer and you can you that just fine of the ice.

a puck transducer mounts to the bottom of a trolling motor. You can use it for ice fishing, but you'd have to rig up a way to keep it straight in the water. Probably would have to use a pole or stick and attach it to that somehow. The ice-transducers don't need anything and hang vertically by themselves.

Try the Marcum out for a pretty good price:
http://www.productsthatsave.com/ptsmvx1.html

Or the reconditioned vexilars are $259 for the FL-8 Genz pack, you can get an extra warranty for $20.

I would go with the reconditioned FL8 Genz pack off of Vexilar's site before I bought this one and had to build it.  You will have more money in a "used" unit, older technology, than you would have in a new "recon" unit, even counting adding in the extra $20 for the extended warranty.

I think it's a good deal. I've had the SLT for almost 10 years now and have only had to buy 1 battery. Even had it go under water once. Thing is flawless and indestructible.

Vexilar SLT ---------------$149   (I'd be surprised if they would honor the warranty, but you never know)
Battery and charger-------$  40   (price is direct from vexilar's site)
19* ice transducer--------$  79   (price is direct from vexilar's site)
Genz carrying case--------$  26   (price is direct from vexilar's site)
______________________ _____
Total                             $294

Why go through all the hassle of piecing together the parts when you could get a current year Marcum VX-1 with zoom for $299. If you don't care about having zoom, then you could get a reconditioned Vexilar FL8-SE propack for $259 direct from Vexilar. You could also add a 2 year warranty for just $20 more. Doesn't make sense to me to get a 10 year old "new" FL8SLT when there are better options out there.

The slt display is not very bright. My best fishing partner had an Fl-8slt and you almost needed to be inside the shack to see it well. Some guys make up a sunshield out of a coffee can so they can see the screen in full sunlight. I have an FL-8se, and that thing is bright as can be. you can read it in full sunlight with no problem. The slt and se models look alike, but the se uses led lights!

I am going with Bean on this one, stay away from it! There are many better options available to you.

By the way, the guy with the slt traded it for an LX-3 last spring. ;)

Be patient and watch ebay.  I got a used Marcum VX-1 recently in very good condition for only $144 which included shipping.  The deals are out there if you watch closely.

I paid 100 bucks for my Fl8 SLT. It came with battery, charger, all mounted in a cooler. It is a little noisy. The older they are the more noise they make. You can send them in to quiet them down. I mounted it to the wall of my shanty and sit within an arms length of it so brightness didn't matter.
