Fluro vs Steel Leaders for Pike
« on: Jun 15, 2020, 02:18 PM »
Being locked in at home for these past few months I've been able to fix, organize, clean most everything when I decided why not redo my tip ups for Pike.  I'm cutting off the "Y" shaped quick strike set up I made and redoing them into a single line with a sliding second hook.  I would like some opinions on whether I should use a seven strand wire leader, probably a red wire OR go with a 30 lb fluro leader.

Thanks

I'm no expert, but it may depend on where you fish. I mostly fish a gin clear lake with a lot of pike but almost none over 35".  I tie my own 30lb fluoro leaders about 18" long (I've used 20lb too when there's very little snow cover on the ice). If there's a nick in one i just put a new leader on the dacron. I've not had a fluoro leader break from a fish - auger blade maybe  ::) . I'm confident I get more flags to go off than guys with steel leaders, but this may be a Ford Chevy debate too...

Ha ha here we go!  The age old question.   I've been bit off using 50# flouro through the ice, but never during open water.  I use 60# exclusively for open water, but have recently been using both flouro and steel through the ice.  I use 38# AFW single strand for wire and tie my own rigs using haywire twists.
