Ah yes, fishing for smelt.  There's just something about fishing for winter smelt right there on the ice and trying to fill the bucket...even if it was barely catching a dozen smelt only.

From the video I'm a bit more surprised at the sinker weights they have on their rig.  It's not by means that small as it seems to be heavy enough to pull the rig down fairly quickly.

very interesting video.

Makes our "Advanced Jaw-Jacker" seem obsolete. Imagine a "Perch Robot".... ;D

Too bad but Minnesota would make it illegal for sure.

I jigged for lake smelt in Minnesota last year and got a few.

My secret was a Livescope and watching them bite instead of feeling it.

Thank you for posting this video.

Crazy is Correct. Not catching anything and then reprograming your robot.  At 67 trying to catch those smelt would be by luck. HArd enough to detect Perch and Crappie sometimes. Better to just jig and then check if there is one on or not.

I recognized those flip over bubble shelters from the 70s. Have not seen one of those in a long time. Are they all home built, or does someone manufacture them?

Kevin1 thank you for posting the video always interesting to see the species of fish that are pursued by ice fishermen in other parts of the world and the equipment and techniques used by those anglers. We do have a member from Japan who posts his trips and some videos at this time his name escapes my memory.

I did some searching the Japanese member goes by the screen name of Niru_04 he resides in Fukushima,Japan. If you go to the Ice fishing pictures forum/board and scroll down page one you will find topic Ice Fishing Japan 2020 that has pictures from some of his trips.

Hmmmmmmm....so did Dave Genz came out with the "clam" idea or did some crazy Japanese came out with it?  Perhaps mutually exclusive concepts with the same end results?
