Ice Cleats
« on: Nov 06, 2019, 08:45 PM »
I have had Kahtoola spikes and was disappointed the rubber rotted and broke after 2 years.  I loved the spikes but they didn't last considering the cost.

Any suggestions?  My son has YakTrax XTR and they are starting their 3rd year and going strong.  Not sure they make them anymore.

I have size 14 Muck Artic Pro boots.  I wear size 13 shoes but the Artic Pros must run small.  I won't put screws into my soles.

Thanks for suggestions

One season on sportsmen’s direct. They are similar to Kahoolawe but cheaper. They are damn nice and if I only get couple years out of em im good with that. Easy on n off.

knock offs on ebay for 12 to 18$ and come with a carry bag. i have them for those who go with me that have  nothing.

i use 3/8" kold kutter ice racing screws on all of my boots and like them over any cleats i've used and i've used the micro spikes and yak trax ect. protected 100% of the time on and off the lakes. no pressure points and custom layout the screw contact areas and doesn't change stride or profile.

X2 on sportsmensdirect ice hopper creepers.  This will be my third season with them. Keep an eye on them, sometimes they do drop down half price.

I say Kahtoolas. I’ve worn mine over size 14 mucks for the last 3 seasons and haven’t had a single issue. Having said that, any creeper of that style is what I recommend whether it be Kahtoolas or ice hoppers.

I use Yaktrax. Some guys have had issues with them falling apart, but I've used them for 2 years and no issues. I do take them off when not using/needed to avoid having them under constant stress. Seems to be working.

Did you try contacting Kahtoola about your rotten cleats?  I have never had an issue with mine, but I've seen lots of posts on here from people who have had great experiences with Kahtoola's customer service.  It'd be worth a try, maybe you just got a bum set.

They recommend when not in use take them off the boots , my bud had 2 pair that gave way do to leaving them on a pair of designated ice boots and the company booth times replaced them

Thanks for the replies. I now remember asking about the warranty last season when they broke and forgot to message them.  I did this morning, but in the meantime I might buy some knock-offs just to have as extras.

I did take them off the majority of the time, I just think they stretched a bit going over my size 14 boot.

Thanks

I wear Muck 14s also. I use Korkers, and they fit perfectly over Muck boots. Only have one season on them so I don't know how long they last. I can't believe how well they go with Mucks though. Almost like they were made specifically for them.

YakTrax chains, they work better than the version with the coiled wire, and I don't need to take them off to drive.

I don't think they make these anymore under the YakTrax brand, now are sold as ICEtrekkers

ditto, ditto, ditto. A very few guys have complained that under a lot of pressure they can pull out. If you dip the screw point in just a little dab of Gorilla Glue 10 minute gel, not the kind that needs moisture to activate, they ain't coming out.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

another trick is to start the screw at an off angle (about 10 degrees) then tilt it back to the correct angle it will be on for walking. the two different angles help hold them in also.

I have used stabilizers for a few years, then switched to kahtoolas and am more than happy with them. It is pretty much impossible to slip with them.
Any day on the ice with little to no wind, is a darn good day.

I picked up a pair of RedCamp 19 tooth ice cleats. They are the same thing as the Kahtoolas but ¼ the price. I'm on my 3rd year and they work great. The only time I had problems was when walking in slush around a hole and then they freeze up solid. I had to take them off and bust the ice off (pretty easy) and put them back on. I figure it's just the nature of the beast!

I had those on my Titans but they kept coming off---switched to Kahoota knock-offs.
