Title: snagger sighting?
Post by: cnypanfisher on Jan 31, 2009, 12:32 PM
Hey bud, was that you with the little windbreak out in front of Constantia yesterday evening. My son and I rode up on a ski-doo and came over and talked? The guy caught same amount of fish if it wasn't you, 12 perch and 1 wally.

Didn't get out at all this weekend, been busy getting the boy ready for his new school and getting some work done. He starts his new school on Monday, and that is taking a lot of my time. Hopefully get out Tuesday at this point, i'll go out for a few hours after he goes to school. We did plan to get out today, but he is tired from all the weeks running around and whatnot. That spot you were in is usually good for early walleyes, never perch fished there, but if you got 12 you were doing better than most I have been talking to.

Hey bud, do you know Lenny and Cookie at The Comfort Zone up there, those guys are really good stuff. I know Stoney up there pretty good too, all great stuff. You ever go to the music fests up there?

I know stonie at the campgrounds, He's real good friend of mine. Hard to get him out of bed before noon. Got so sick of 6 perch here 12 perch there, that today fished high noon in middle of nowhere 30 feet off taft bay and got my first limit of eyes( one was over 20 inches) All in 2 hours on large pimples.  Where's the comfort zone.

It is in Pineville just west of stoneys, it looks like a new log cabin type place there. My buddy Lenny bought the place last year and he is retiring there and opening a B+B. We should try to drag Stoney out of bed and have him come down and fish, he's a good s#$%.

YEAH I have met him once, you have to be careful up here in the fishing business. people come and go all the time. If you want to survive( alot of talking behind your back type stuff, steal fishing info, etc..) I have to know somebody a while before I'll fish with them or show them anything about the river etc.... He bought DeAngelos old taxidermy place on the corner, hope he makes it, it's tough out there right now. Give stonie a call sometime and we'll plan an oneida trip.

Randolph and the boys wacked um pretty good up by the rootball, then came back and dryed off. Went back down to the blunt hole in pm ,got some big steelies on pink worm wacky style. pssd off a couple of float rodders who were'nt getting anything. Jerry from vermont said he lost one pushing 20. Steve from deleware went about 3 for 12. Great day on the river compared to yesterday for my guys. You ice fishing this weekend or floating the river.

HEY MARKIE, RANDOLPH just came running in the lodge with a STEELIE, but it only weighed in at 10.2 pounds. Looks like RON from the NEFF group from PA. has won it with a 10.5 pounder! RANDOLPH got his on a black maribu jig under a float,Ron got his on a pink fly with a tag that imitates a pink worm.

Hey WIRESTONE & BIG JIMMY we could have some great ice up here by the weekend if we get a little rain and warmer temps on thursday & early friday followed by colder temps on late friday, saturday, sunday. But if we get more snow after the warm snap or the cold air moves in too slowly, it will be the biggest mess you have EVER SEEN. Make sure you bring your WADERS and covers for jet sleds.

Was out on ice yesterday not as much snow as thought a few warm days and you'll gain a couple inches of white ice. Monster high pressure screwed fishing up though, I hope it gets below 30.25 soon.Barometer was so high even affected the river fishing on tuesday, after a great monday. PA boys rains coming friday now not thursday.

[ TODAY'S PROBABLY THE BOMB OUT THERE, I would have killed myself walking in all that wet snow & slush today. I need to by a machine( but if I do that I'll jinks the lake for next year). Looks like big meltdown friday, then big winds & a refreeze saturday. I guess I'll be out there sunday. Good 24 inches of ice where I was yesterday. I might sneek out friday if no torrential rains. You have been having some bad luck this year kevin, your overdue for the motherload of good luck! HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT WEEK!

Seems like Sandy pond being shallower was'nt effected as much as Oneida was according to the reports I have read. I'm sure there's a few well skilled fishermen out there that did OK today. It seems like bright sunshine and barometers today in the 30.40's was no good. Also the SALMON RIVER was off today for MOST PEOPLE on steelhead compared to LAST WEEK OR SO! Sorry still got the flu got to get back to fishing man.

Was on Oneida today, lambasted the tanker perch, got 50 (11-14 inchers) what a blast, I don't get to go to all the great spots because I don't own a machine. This time of year is the only time a walker can crush them, like the other guys with quads! I walked 4.3 miles today, 12 minute miles ice is great!

Sorry I could not get a picture of the car. We had a clogged gas filter. Real shaky trip. State wide tourney wipe most places out of smelts ,which killed our success. No flags on on shiners. Some guys next to us had some smelts and gave me a few dead ones . So we got to jig a few nice whites. Had a nice time with my dad. Just proves ,you can not catch fish in Minnnihonk with out smelts. Might be up in a few weeks.

What are those white perch and a couple yellows, been smashing the jumbo's in the last week at Oneida. Targeted walleyes today for the first time in a while and put 5 on the ice in 45 minutes right at dark. It was a blast man( today is the last day of walleye), wish you were with me, fished by myself. Keep in touch the creeks are going to be early this year!

Targeted walleyes today for the first time in a while and put 5 on the ice in 45 minutes right at dark. It was a blast man( today is the last day of walleye), wish you were with me, fished by myself. Keep in touch the creeks are going to be early this year!

Snagger I  still go on shanty about every day, just don't post to much. Would of liked to met up with you on Oneida. I had a pretty good year with the eyes considering how little I made it up there this year. I only got to fish there about 20 days this year. I guess it's not that badconsidering it's a 3.5 hr drive. I fished Canadorago Lake alot this winter and did really well with the perch.

I made it out there 28 times, but it froze up late considering how cold it was, then got cheated at the end with the rain! That's how it goes! How did you do that one time when you went with that walleye guy( I forgot his name, he has a drift boat) from up my way?

Snagger  that was the best weekend I had up there all ice season. We fished off Warner Rd in Jewell right on the drop off. That's the only problem catching eyes, catch and release after an hour of fishing.

I only had that problem 5 times this year, but that's OK, that what drives me to do better next time out!

I've done it on first and especially last ice, it's the middle part of winter that I'm trying to figure out. Last year I think I was close to figuring out a pattern or maybe just got lucky, I don't know yet!  How have you been Meathunter, haven't heard much from ya since you went out on the Big Lake in August?

Last night was my first full moon that I've done well in a long time, maybe if theres enough bait around it don't matter in the Fall, cause I do crap in the spring with a full moon! there wasn't tons of bait, but alot of busting eyes on the surface well after dark where I was at!  Starting Tomorrow 4 days of west wind and lake effect, walleye BONANZA!!!!!!

my goal for this season... "to catch 3 eyes in one day...." its funny I can do it from a boat, and I can do it with waders...but never been able to catch 3 through the ice....

Concentrate on the necked down areas adjacent to the humps and flats. I find these areas to be very productive mid-winter. They usually have a nice mix of Jumbos and Walleyes funneling through. Also don't think mid-day is always a bust, I have good success on the 40+ ft. flats after 10:00- 11:00. Many times while there were mile high skys and blazing sun! The mid season bite could be tough, but this is when you need to try different things. Peak period structure fishin is always your high percentage time to be fishing, but when 9-9:30 rolls around and you only have one, two or none to show for your efforts, don't automatically assume the eyes are done till evening. Thats when you start looking deeper, fishing flats and STAYING MOBILE!!! I don't think I've ever been out there, and didn't have persistence and determination pay off.I also believe that the mid-winter period is the best time for mid-day walleyes...Most folks assume just the opposite, but ALWAYS march to the beat of your OWN drum..Before you know it you've assembled your own mid-winter pattern for icing more eyes!

Hey Ice Addict your PM box is full again!  >:(   Mid day is my favorite time and sometimes most frustrating! I don't get frustrated easy, unless the weather is really nasty(7th year without a shanty & put 28 days on there last year)  I love walking around out deeper and looking for schools of walleye, and I do find them quite often. getting them to hit and loosing them at the hole is my biggest problem, But that's the challenging part of Ice Fishing. I'm stubborn and will not use a power auger, so I drill small 6 inch holes. I never take the transducer out of the hole either, just real the fish right up through it, I leave the floaty thing out on the ice and set my finder on it! I rarelly make daybreak, always have coffee with Rick and the guys at the bait shop( I really enjoy that) and get out there one hour after sun up! So I probably bring on the hard bite on myself!  So many little things to be successful at ice fishing, just got to remember to do them!  Now I'm really ready for ice, I'm gonna go look for my notes from last year now!!  ;D

Ok Snagger, In-box all empty! I hear ya about being ready! I just hope this " el-nino" doesn't deal us a messy hand this year, but I have a bad feeling it will. Only thing we can hope for is that the melt downs come after a good hard solid base is already established, and they don't last to long. Last years Ice was truely AWESOME!!! I just hope we can experience those conditions again, sometimes that don't happen but once in a blue moon.

I know what you mean about the bait shop comradery, thats one of my favorite things to do! We also do it after fishing and at all different times of the day. So you don't have to miss that PRECIOUS first light bite! Mornings are my absolute favorite time to be on the ice, not just for the action, which is usually about the BEST of the day, but for the beauty and serenity of it all!

So basically I guess what I'm trying to tell you is GET YOUR #@$!*&* BUTT OUT THERE!!!  ;D

I usually use a 7" or 8" hole, and lose my share of fish, but I almost always rip that transducer out of the water..

Heres how I rip the fish up through the hole without damaging the transducer cord, DUCT TAPE, 5 hard years and tons of hooks in that tape! I know other people who are on there 2nd and 3rd transducer because of damaged cords!

I got a bad feeling about The El Nino Too!! There will be good ice everywhere but Oneida Lake and Sandy pond because of wind and frequent meltdowns!  Maybe we will get lucky, there forcasting above normal temps in the western U.S., but average here in the Northeast. They say there could be a active east coast storm track, if that comes true, it will be cold here in upstate N.Y.! I got my fingers crossed, did a little jigging rapping tonight at the canal to get practiced up for the ice!                                            I am ready man! Bring on the Ice!!!!

October/November gets me revved up for the sunrises (because of hunting) so I'm in tune with getting up at 4:30am, to be at our locations at or around sunrise with a fresh cup of coffee........Love that.........my wife thinks I should be admitted for watching the 11:00 news and get 4-5 hours sleep just to watch the sun come up (usually in a diffrent county)............just depends on which month of the year it is, and what species I'm after...........

As you can see I'm on the exact opposite schedule right now for eyes, then daybreak in winter, back to night owl for spring eyes, summer construction up before sunrise, salmon season 2 months up at 9 am, then back to this. an 89 year old guest says the key to a long life is regular eating and sleeping pattern. After all the partying he seen me do for 20 years and Mason tending, and my fishing schedules, He's suprized I'm still alive! I'm not long for this world, but sure did make the BEST OF IT SO FAR MAN!!!!      You are right though, all the pictures you see are sun sets. I like sunrise better. Sunsets means it's almost over on the ice, sunrise you still have all day to look forward too!  Maybe we'll run into each other on Oneida sometime meathunter, I fish alone alot!

Heres a pic from Williams beach with 2 close friends!
