Hey guys, I admit I haven't kept up on the new regs. for fishing Vt. I have read some posts...I usually ice fish for Northerns in Quechee and up at Norton Pond. I usually buy my bait at Steves in Hartland, does anyone know if he is still in business...I was thinking of making it up to Champlain a lot this season but with gas so expensive a day trip would cost me about $75. or more..with the new regs. I'm not sure its worth it....can you still buy Goldens as bait and use them in such places like Dewey Pond and Norton Pond? Thanks guys for any info you may help me out with...so looking forward to fishing soon......

You are not allowed to use goldens in Vermont this year. >:(
-
Can you still use suckers? ???
-
Pike dude doesn't know what he is talking about. You can use goldens if the bait shop has them.
You can use suckers if the bait shop can get them.
The new regulation info can be found here.

Below is the list of what is allowed. The question becomes what can the bait shop order from an approved source.
The following fish species are the only approved species of
fish for use as bait in Vermont.
Eastern silvery minnow
Fathead minnow
Bluntnose minnow
Emerald shiner
Golden shiner
Spottail shiner
Common shiner
Mimic shiner
Creek chub
Fallfish
Blacknose dace
Longnose dace
Northern redbelly dace
White sucker
Longnose sucker
Rainbow Smelt

Thanks for the info Little Brown Dog, sounds like I won't miss a thing with the bait since it sounds like I can use everything that I'm accustomed to....hopefully Steve's Bait Shop in N. Hartland is able to get the Goldens...

Sorry, these new regs have me a little wound up, and I'm just trying to help stop some of the rumors. Goldens are also called Arkansas shiners, and you can get them from the commercial sources.

How about Hunt's minnows? Either they are called by a different name on the list or you cant buy them?

hunt are called Eastern silvery minnow

I knew they were called something else! Thanks Hogisland
